KAISER, JR. Was John the Baptist the fulfillment of Malachi’s prediction about Elijah the prophet who was to come before that great day of the Lord comes? The hermeneutical solution to this question is offered in a generic fulfillment. or what the older theologians called the novissma. Therefore, Elijah has come "in the spirit and power" witnessed in John the Baptist and will yet come in the future. Generic prophecy has three foci: (1) the revelatory word, (2) all intervening historical events which perpetuate that word, and (3) the generic wholeness (one sense or meaning) in which the final or ultimate fulfillment participates in all the earnests that occupied the interim between the original revelatory word and this climactic realization. * * * THE NT's interest in the prophet Elijah may be easily assessed from the fact that he is the most frequently mentioned OT figure in the NT after Moses (80 times), Abraham (73), and David (59); Elijah's name appears 29 or 30 times.1 Even more significant, however, are the six major and explicit references to Elijah in the Synoptic Gospels. There, some of Jesus' contemporaries identified our Lord--in the second of three opinions-- as Elijah (Mark 6:14-16; Luke 9:7-9). Jesus' disciples were also aware of this popular confusion, for they too repeated it (Matt 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21). -

Daniel 1. Who was Daniel? The name The name Daniel occurs twice in the Book of Ezekiel. Ezek 14:14 says that even Noah, Daniel, and Job could not save a sinful country, but could only save themselves. Ezek 28:3 asks the king of Tyre, “are you wiser than Daniel?” In both cases, Daniel is regarded as a legendary wise and righteous man. The association with Noah and Job suggests that he lived a long time before Ezekiel. The protagonist of the Biblical Book of Daniel, however, is a younger contemporary of Ezekiel. It may be that he derived his name from the legendary hero, but he cannot be the same person. A figure called Dan’el is also known from texts found at Ugarit, in northern Syrian, dating to the second millennium BCE. He is the father of Aqhat, and is portrayed as judging the cause of the widow and the fatherless in the city gate. This story may help explain why the name Daniel is associated with wisdom and righteousness in the Hebrew Bible. The name means “God is my judge,” or “judge of God.” Daniel acquires a new identity, however, in the Book of Daniel. As found in the Hebrew Bible, the book consists of 12 chapters. The first six are stories about Daniel, who is portrayed as a youth deported from Jerusalem to Babylon, who rises to prominence at the Babylonian court. The second half of the book recounts a series of revelations that this Daniel received and were interpreted for him by an angel. -

Dr. Jacob Job Research Associate Department of Fish, Wildlife, Conservation Biology Colorado State University “Listening to a Continent: The Students, Sounds, and Stories of Soundscape Science” Abstract The Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division of the National Park Service is tasked with monitoring and managing noise and light pollution in the national parks, as well as their effects on human visitation and wildlife. To aid in this mission, in 2011 NSNSD formed a cooperative agreement with members of the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, which eventually became known as the Sound and Light Ecology Team. With the help of a team of undergraduates who populate the SALET Listening Laboratory, the research scientists, post- docs, and graduate students of SALET have joined in the fight to understand and combat the effects of noise and light pollution in America’s natural areas. To make their work more broadly accessible and widely known among other scientists and the general public, additional efforts have been directed towards creating and maintaining an official website to act as a billboard for the important work being conducted by the team, as well as a repository for the numerous publications, presentations, and media documents associated with their work. Finally, in an attempt to raise awareness about the diversity and importance of natural sounds, the team has begun capturing individual and soundscape recordings heard in national parks around the country. These recordings are being stored in permanent libraries to document species and their associated acoustic diversity in anticipation of future changes. More importantly, these recordings are being displayed online and in visitor center exhibits to reach out to visitors and the general public to raise awareness about the unique species and sounds of the national parks, the threats that they face, and why their conservation is so critical to maintain the health of national park ecosystems. -

Old Testament Overview The Christian Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The word “testament” can also be translated as “covenant” or “relationship.” The Old Testament describes God’s covenant of law with the people of Israel. The New Testament describes God’s covenant of grace through Jesus Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we enter into a new relationship with God. Christians believe that ALL Scripture is “God-breathed.” God’s Word speaks to our lives, revealing God’s nature. The Lord desires to be in relationship with His people. By studying the Bible, we discover how to enter into right relationship with God. We also learn how Christians are called to live in God’s kingdom. The Old Testament is also called the Hebrew Bible. Jewish theologians use the Hebrew word “Tanakh.” The term describes the three divisions of the Old Testament: the Law (Torah), the Prophets (Nevi’im), and the Writings (Ketuvim). “Tanakh” is composed of the first letters of each section. The Law in Hebrew is “Torah” which literally means “teaching.” In the Greek language, it is known as the Pentateuch. It comprises the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. This section contains the stories of Creation, the patriarchs and matriarchs, the exodus from Egypt, and the giving of God’s Law, including the Ten Commandments. The Prophets cover Israel’s history from the time the Jews entered the Promised Land of Israel until the Babylonian captivity of Judah. -

Almost everyone at some point in life asks, "Why do bad things happen to good people? The Book of Job does not really answer the question, "Why is there suffering?" But it does show right and wrong ideas and feelings about suffering and the meaning of life. Job is a man who is wise, rich, and good. Then suddenly, terrible things happen to him. His ten children are killed. He loses all his wealth. And he becomes ill with a painful skin disease. Three friends come to visit him, and they try to explain to Job why these bad things have happened. They tell Job that sin caused his suffering and that God was punishing him. Job insists it is not true, but no one believes him. Job becomes very discouraged and angry, but he still believes God cares about him, although he don't understand why he must suffer so much. In the end, God answers Job in a whirlwind, reminding him that humans can never understand how great God is. After Job hears God speak, he says, "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Job realized that his trust in God should not depend on what happens to him. God says that Job's friends didn't know what they were talking about. Finally, God restores Job's health, makes him twice as rich as he had been before, and gives him ten more children. -

Honors Director ______________________________ Date TIMES OF MALACHI 3 Abstract Malachi is an Old Testament book addressing Israel’s struggles with discontentment and complacent worship, issues that are strikingly similar to those in the church today. Israel had returned to their sacred land but had left their sacred ways behind. The heart for God had perhaps been left in captivity. Selfishness and disappointment reigned, as the nation felt oddly deflated by God’s lack of a “proper response” to their desires, while they simultaneously flaunted their disobedience to God’s laws. The main sins addressed by Malachi were: the corruption of worship and offerings, the rampant sin of divorce, marriage to foreign women, and the attitude of complacency toward these sins. Half-hearted offerings, self-serving choices, and an absolute denial of their sinful state calls to mind the heart of the modern church today. Malachi delivers a rally cry that rings throughout the ages and should batter the doors of our hearts and churches today, as much as it was intended to in the times of this God-sent messenger. -

1 Meeting God, Again - Micah We’ve been going through a series called Meeting God, Again. If you’re just joining us for the first time, we’ve been walking through the minor prophets in the Old Testament to highlight the character of God, and really, to see what kind of relationship God wants with us. Today we’re talking about the prophet Micah. Like all the minor prophets, Micah deals with sin, judgement and hope… but not just on an individual level… The prophets are addressing sin, judgement and hope on a national level. And as I studied this book, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are we really a “blessed nation”? On one level, I’d say, yeah we’re definitely blessed. We live in a free country! Honestly, I have to say, when my plane landed back in the states after 2 weeks in Israel, I was really glad to see our flag flying high! I’m convinced that we can’t fully appreciate the freedom we have unless we’ve been to a country without freedom - and I only had a small taste of that! So, don’t misunderstand my question: I appreciate and completely respect those that have served our country (like all of my grandfathers) and especially those that have given their lives for our freedom! So yes, on one hand, we’re blessed. But, I’m not convinced we’re blessed in such a way that the wealth and prosperity we have is proof that God is on our side. Think about this: We have everything we need - actually, most of us have more than we need to live. -
Of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament's Ethical Dimensions
ABSTRACT The Moral World(s) of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament’s ethical dimensions have taken one of three approaches: descriptive, systematic, or formative. Descriptive approaches are concerned with the historical world, social context, and streams of tradition out of which OT texts developed and their diverse moral perspectives. Systematic approaches investigate principles and paradigms that encapsulate the unity of the OT and facilitate contemporary appropriation. Formative approaches embrace the diversity of the OT ethical witnesses and view texts as a means of shaping the moral imagination, fostering virtues, and forming character The major phase of this investigation pursues a descriptive analysis of the moral world of Malachi—an interesting case study because of its location near the end of the biblical history of Israel. A moral world analysis examines the moral materials within texts, symbols used to represent moral ideals, traditions that helped shape them, and the social world (political, economic, and physical) in which they are applied. This study contributes a development to this reading methodology through a categorical analysis of moral foundations, expectations, motives, and consequences. This moral world reading provides insight into questions such as what norms and traditions shaped the morals of Malachi’s community? What specific priorities, imperatives, and injunctions were deemed important? How did particular material, economic, and political interests shape moral decision-making? How did religious symbols bring together their view of the world and their social values? The moral world reading is facilitated by an exploration of Malachi’s social and symbolic worlds. Social science data and perspectives are brought together from an array of sources to present six important features of Malachi’s social world. -

COURSE DESCRIPTION An expository study of the message and times of the prophets, emphasizing the themes of the Day of the LORD, judgment, restoration, promise and fulfillment, Messiah, kingdom, and the new people of God. A Reformed biblical-theological approach (i.e., redemptive- historical method) will be used in order to unfold the meaning of the (Latter) Prophetical corpus in relation to its covenant Old Testament context. Its relation and significance to the New Testament will also be discussed. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course: 1) The student will be familiar with a couple of key interpretive approaches: a) the grammatico-historical method and b) the biblical- theological/redemptive-historical method. 2) The student will be able to identify the message, historical context, and literary structure of each prophetic book. In addition, the student will be familiar with certain key passages found within the Prophetic corpus that will have been examined and exposited in class (e.g., Isaiah 53; Daniel 9; etc.). 3) The student will be familiar with the office and function of the Prophets (i.e., prophetism) and their significance in both Old and New Testaments. 4) The student will be acquainted with the main interpretive issues concerning the interpretation of prophecy (e.g., conservative vs. liberal views of authorship/dating; genre considerations (e.g., literal or figurative/symbolic); literary structure (e.g., the use of recapitulation); etc.
