It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

Idolatry in the Ancient Near East1 Ancient Near Eastern Pantheons Ammonite Pantheon The chief god was Moloch/Molech/Milcom. Assyrian Pantheon The chief god was Asshur. Babylonian Pantheon At Lagash - Anu, the god of heaven and his wife Antu. At Eridu - Enlil, god of earth who was later succeeded by Marduk, and his wife Damkina. Marduk was their son. Other gods included: Sin, the moon god; Ningal, wife of Sin; Ishtar, the fertility goddess and her husband Tammuz; Allatu, goddess of the underworld ocean; Nabu, the patron of science/learning and Nusku, god of fire. Canaanite Pantheon The Canaanites borrowed heavily from the Assyrians. According to Ugaritic literature, the Canaanite pantheon was headed by El, the creator god, whose wife was Asherah. Their offspring were Baal, Anath (The OT indicates that Ashtoreth, a.k.a. Ishtar, was Baal’s wife), Mot & Ashtoreth. Dagon, Resheph, Shulman and Koshar were other gods of this pantheon. The cultic practices included animal sacrifices at high places; sacred groves, trees or carved wooden images of Asherah. Divination, snake worship and ritual prostitution were practiced. Sexual rites were supposed to ensure fertility of people, animals and lands. Edomite Pantheon The primary Edomite deity was Qos (a.k.a. Quas). Many Edomite personal names included Qos in the suffix much like YHWH is used in Hebrew names. Egyptian Pantheon2 Egyptian religion was never unified. Typically deities were prominent by locale. Only priests worshipped in the temples of the great gods and only when the gods were on parade did the populace get to worship them. These 'great gods' were treated like human kings by the priesthood: awakened in the morning with song; washed and dressed the image; served breakfast, lunch and dinner. -

MODERN THEOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY LEGAL THEORY: A TALE OF IDEOLOGICAL COLLAPSE t John Warwick Montgomery Abstract This paper bridges an intellectual chasm often regarded as impassable, that between modern jurisprudence (philosophy of law) and contemporary theology. Ourthesis is that remarkablysimilar developmental patterns exist in these two areas of the history of ideas and that lessons learned in the one are of the greatestpotential value to the other. It will be shown that the fivefold movement in the history of modern theology (classical liberalism, neo- orthodoxy, Bultmannianexistentialism, Tillichianontology, andsecular/death- of-God viewpoints) has been remarkably paralled in legal theory (realism/positivism,the jurisprudence ofH.L.A. Hart,the philosophyofRonald Dworkin, the neo-Kantian political theorists, and Critical Legal Studies' deconstructionism). From this comparative analysis the theologian and the legal theorist can learn vitally important lessons for their own professional endeavors. -

KAISER, JR. Was John the Baptist the fulfillment of Malachi’s prediction about Elijah the prophet who was to come before that great day of the Lord comes? The hermeneutical solution to this question is offered in a generic fulfillment. or what the older theologians called the novissma. Therefore, Elijah has come "in the spirit and power" witnessed in John the Baptist and will yet come in the future. Generic prophecy has three foci: (1) the revelatory word, (2) all intervening historical events which perpetuate that word, and (3) the generic wholeness (one sense or meaning) in which the final or ultimate fulfillment participates in all the earnests that occupied the interim between the original revelatory word and this climactic realization. * * * THE NT's interest in the prophet Elijah may be easily assessed from the fact that he is the most frequently mentioned OT figure in the NT after Moses (80 times), Abraham (73), and David (59); Elijah's name appears 29 or 30 times.1 Even more significant, however, are the six major and explicit references to Elijah in the Synoptic Gospels. There, some of Jesus' contemporaries identified our Lord--in the second of three opinions-- as Elijah (Mark 6:14-16; Luke 9:7-9). Jesus' disciples were also aware of this popular confusion, for they too repeated it (Matt 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21). -

Carson .......tr ___________ ~ CHAPTER ONE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DOCTRINE OF SCRIPTURE The pattern of Christian thought that emerged from the Reforma tion is often summed up under the three phrases: sola gratia, sola fides, and sola Scriptura. When I was a boy! I sometimes wondered how logic could be preseIVed if there were three statements each claiming that something or other was "sola"; but in due course I learned that grace is the sole ground of salvation! faith is the sole means of salvation! and the Scriptures are the sole ultimate authority for faith and life-all set in the context of the polemics of the Reformation period. Precisely because the Reformers' theological formulations were shaped by the controversies of their age! it is clear that the "faith and life" formula was meant to be an all-embracing rubric! not a limiting one. They claimed that the deposit of truth lies in the Bible! not in the church or in the magisterium of the church. Their concern! in other words! was to spell out the locus of authority in order to rebut their Roman Catholic opponents! not to restrict the range of the Bible's authority to religious life and thought! away from history and the natural world.l The modern disjunction would have seemed strange to them. This side of the EnlightenmenC debate over the Scriptures soon moved on to broader matters. Although the history of these debates has been chronicled many times!2 a great deal of detailed work still needs to be done. -

The submission oftwo arti cles on the topic, the one dealing with the general development ofPinnock ~ theology and the other with the specific question ofexclusivism and inclusivism, suggested that it might be worthwhile to publish them together and also give the subject the opportunity to comment on them. The author of our first article is doing doctoral research on the problem of the unevangelised in recent evangelical theology in the University ofBristol. Daniel 1. Who Was Daniel? the Name the Name Daniel Occurs Twice In
Daniel 1. Who was Daniel? The name The name Daniel occurs twice in the Book of Ezekiel. Ezek 14:14 says that even Noah, Daniel, and Job could not save a sinful country, but could only save themselves. Ezek 28:3 asks the king of Tyre, “are you wiser than Daniel?” In both cases, Daniel is regarded as a legendary wise and righteous man. The association with Noah and Job suggests that he lived a long time before Ezekiel. The protagonist of the Biblical Book of Daniel, however, is a younger contemporary of Ezekiel. It may be that he derived his name from the legendary hero, but he cannot be the same person. A figure called Dan’el is also known from texts found at Ugarit, in northern Syrian, dating to the second millennium BCE. He is the father of Aqhat, and is portrayed as judging the cause of the widow and the fatherless in the city gate. This story may help explain why the name Daniel is associated with wisdom and righteousness in the Hebrew Bible. The name means “God is my judge,” or “judge of God.” Daniel acquires a new identity, however, in the Book of Daniel. As found in the Hebrew Bible, the book consists of 12 chapters. The first six are stories about Daniel, who is portrayed as a youth deported from Jerusalem to Babylon, who rises to prominence at the Babylonian court. The second half of the book recounts a series of revelations that this Daniel received and were interpreted for him by an angel. -
