Overview

The Christian is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the . The word “testament” can also be translated as “” or “relationship.” The Old Testament describes God’s covenant of with the people of . The New Testament describes God’s covenant of grace through . When we accept Jesus as our Savior and , we enter into a new relationship with God.

Christians believe that ALL Scripture is “God-breathed.” God’s Word speaks to our lives, revealing God’s nature. The Lord desires to be in relationship with His people. By studying , we discover how to enter into right relationship with God. We also learn how are called to live in God’s kingdom.

The Old Testament is also called the . Jewish theologians use the Hebrew word “Tanakh.” The term describes the three divisions of the Old Testament: the Law (), the (Nevi’im), and the Writings (). “Tanakh” is composed of the first letters of each section.

™ The Law in Hebrew is “Torah” which literally means “teaching.” In the Greek , it is known as the Pentateuch. It comprises the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. This section contains the stories of Creation, the and matriarchs, from , and the giving of God’s Law, including the .

™ The Prophets cover Israel’s history from the the entered the of Israel until the of . The books are sometimes divided into the Major and Minor Prophets. They can also be divided chronologically into the Earlier Prophets (historical in nature) and the Later Prophets (more prophetic in nature.). In general, the prophets were not concerned with predicting the future. Instead, they called Israel to and holiness in the present. The Prophets include: , Judges, , Kings, , , , , , , , Johan, , , , , , Zechariah, and .

™ The Writings or “Scriptures” include all the other books of the Old Testament. They contain history, poetry, proverbs, and more. The Writings are: , Proverbs, , , , Lamentations, , , , , , and Chronicles.

Bible Chronology of the Old Testament The following chronological list is adapted from The Chronological Bible. Its purpose is to help develop an overall understanding of the order of the major people and events of the Bible. The dates are somewhat disputed; but overall, they can give an overview of time and order.
