In recent years, we have experienced fundamental advances in the field of waste, but we still need to work harder to achieve generation reduction goals and maintain the value of products and materials. MUNICIPAL WASTE European Directives set objectives for progress on this matter: INDUSTRIAL WASTE — European municipal waste recycling targets are set at 50% for 2020 and 65% by 2030. CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION WASTE — It is necessary to increase the quantity and quality of all the fractions that are collected selectively in order to be able to reintroduce the maximum amount of materials into the economy. — The selective collection of biowaste is one of the key fractions for achieving these goals. — By 2030, only 10% of the municipal waste generated will be able to go to landfills. — This final treatment of waste must be reduced to only non-recyclable waste. — Regarding construction and demolition waste, the recycling target is set at 70% for 2020. Political will, citizen collaboration, business sector participation, as well as legal and fiscal instruments are key aspects to improve management and change the model towards a circular economy. This publication collects the main statistics on the evolution of waste management in Catalonia over the last ten years, obtained from information from local bodies, industrial activity centres and construction waste managers. All the information can be consulted on the website of the Waste Agency of Catalonia. 4 2 INTRODUCTION MUNICIPAL WASTE 2.1 Generation of municipal waste MUNICIPAL 2.2 Selective collection of municipal waste 2.3 Selective collection in municipalities WASTE with door-to-door service 2.4 Selective collection of the organic matter fraction 2.5 Selective collection of paper and cardboard 2.6 Selective collection of glass 2.7 Selective collection of lightweight packaging 2.8 The non-segregated fraction 2.8.1 Primary destination of non-segregated fraction 2.8.2 Final destination of the non-segregated fraction 2.9 Carbon footprint from municipal waste treatment in Catalonia 2.10 Economic indicators INDUSTRIAL WASTE CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION WASTE 5 INTRODUCTION 2.1 MUNICIPAL WASTE GENERATION OF 2.1 Generation of municipal waste MUNICIPAL WASTE 2.2 Selective collection of municipal waste 2.3 Selective collection in municipalities with door-to-door service In 2019, 4 million tonnes of municipal waste was generated in Catalonia. There has been a general decreasing trend in the production of waste, despite a slight increase in recent years, most likely due to exiting the economic crisis (Table 1, Graph 1). 2.4 Selective • L'aprofitament De Les Aigües Del Canal D'urgell

In recent years, we have seen fundamental changes take place in this field, which have now been multiplied MUNICIPAL WASTE and accelerated. Catalonia is fully immersed in these changes: INDUSTRIAL WASTE — Significant progress has been made in reducing the impact of waste generation on the environment and human health. The challenge for the future is to continue this progress, especially as concerns the amount of untreated waste that is still CONSTRUCTION AND being disposed of. DEMOLITION WASTE — There are two main challenges to be addressed: reducing levels of waste generation and aligning waste management goals with those of a circular economy. Clearly, waste minimisation and management can significantly contribute to the efficient use of resources, which is one of the central pillars of a circular economy. — Selective collection must be promoted and improved. There can not be a circular economy without good selective collection. — Small and medium-sized cities tend to perform better than national capitals, so there needs to be a greater focus on larger cities. — The role of citizens is key and local authorities have the closest contact with them.

The Catalan tourism sector has boosted the accessibility of its services, making a reality the principle that a respectful and diverse society should recognise the equality of conditions for people with disabilities. This principle is enshrined in the “Barcelona declaration: the city and people with disabilities” that to date has been signed by 400 European cities. There are many Catalan companies and destinations that have adapted their products and services accordingly.

  • The Romeries: Tourist Opportunity and Social Relationships Between Local and Visitors
Cuadernos de Turismo, nº 41, (2018); pp. 737-738 Universidad de Murcia ISSN: 1139-7861 eISSN: 1989-4635 THE ROMERIES: TOURIST OPPORTUNITY AND SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LOCAL AND VISITORS. THE CASE OF LA CERDANYA IN CATALONIA (SPAIN) José Mª Prat Forga Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. UNED [email protected] Gemma Cànoves Valiente Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona [email protected] Many rural towns, with the aim of reducing their secular demographic, economic, social and cultural marginalization, are committed to highlighting their natural and cultural heritage, assuming that if historical memory is lost, identity is also lost. In this way, the interest in the tourist revaluation of the material and immaterial reli- gious heritage of these territories has grown. Thus, some religious places have ended up becoming a multifunctional and multifaceted element, a meeting point for tourists and the local population. In addition, tourists, more experienced, critical, demanding and individualistic, have modified their motivations and concerns, demanding activities that are increasingly per- sonalized, authentic and that provide them with values and experiences. On the other hand, the attitude of residents toward tourists is also changing. Among the most influential factors in residents’ attitudes toward tourism, there are two fundamental factors: the type and degree of interaction between residents and visitors and the importance of tourism activity in the territory. The theory of social exchange explains that human beings select their relational trans- actions once they have evaluated their benefits and costs. According to this idea, attitudes are affected by the perceptions of the exchange that individuals consider they are perform- ing.
