CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This thesis addresses the salient phenomenon of Holocaust memorialization in Germany and Hungary from 1989/1990 to the present-day. The fundamental reason for the rapidly developing Holocaust memorials and monuments across Europe in the 90s can be largely explained by the political shift across Europe. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, in the midst of newly established democracies, reunited Germany along with Hungary wished to come to terms with their troublesome past. This thesis focuses on the disparities between the methods these two countries have pursued to remember their Holocaust victims. In order to elucidate on the complex mechanism behind the diverse process of memorialization in Germany and Hungary, the evolvement of their history politics first and foremost ought to be discussed. -

STOLPERSTEINE, GERMANS REMEMBER HOLOCAUST VICTIMS Abstract A German artist, Gunter Demnig, has since 1996 inserted more than 60,000 stolpersteine (tripping stones) on public pavements, squares and sidewalks, commemorating the location where persons had lived prior to their deportation to concentration camps, and thus, to their death. These stolpersteine are brass squares (10x10 cm), mounted flush on oc bble stones and stating "Here lived", followed by the victim's name, year of birth, date of deportation, place and year of death. The deported were mostly Jews, but also Roma, Sintis, homosexuals, disabled, dissidents and other persecuted persons during the Nazi era (1933-1945). By now, stolpersteine have been placed in more than 1600 towns in twenty European countries. The expenses of $130 per stolperstein are borne by donations from family, friends and anonymous donors. This decentralized project is not without controversy and has not been permitted in a few cities, for example in Munich with the city's governing board arguing that it is inappropriate to walk across these plaques; possible political reasons are not transparent. -

Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs A NEW GOVERNMENT Germany's political landscape went through a major makeover in the fall of 2005. Weakened by widespread dissatisfactionover the economy, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) asked for early elections. Although the Social Democrats appeared to be making up lost ground in the days leading up to the vote, the resultwas a virtual dead heat between the SPD and the center-right Christian De- mocratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU). Neither succeeded in negotiating a new coalition government with the smaller parties— both ruled out any cooperation with a newly formed Left Party—and the only alternative was a "grand coalition" of the SPD and the CDU/CSU under the chancellorship of CDU leader Angela Merkel. Merkel was born in 1954 in East Germany. She studied physics and worked as a chemist before becoming involved in politics after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, ultimately becominga political pro- tégé of Helmut Kohl, then serving as chancellor. Merkel ascended to the leadership of the CDU in 2000. A proponent of economic and socialre- form, Merkel wanted to make Germany more competitive by allowinga longer work week and making it easier for employers to fire workers. She was a strong advocate of transatlantic relatiens and supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq (while opposing sending German troops) ata time when this view was unpopular in Germany. During the election campaign, the ever-diplomatic Paul Spiegel, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany (CCJG), said he looked for- ward to working with Germany's next chancellor, whoever he—or she— might be. -

www.stolpersteine.eu FAQs …about the project: Why the name STOLPERSTEINE? Gunter Demnig no longer remembers exactly how the name came about. But what is certain is that he chose the name before knowing that there would be more than one installation. He liked the double meaning of the German word because he want to provoke people into “stumbling” mentally. Contrary to what certain online sources claim, Gunter Demnig did NOT want to create a link to a certain anti-Semitic expression apparently used in Nazi Germany that he did not even know. When asked about the name these days, Gunter Demnig tends to cite a schoolchild who once answered a journalist’s enquiry as to whether people could actually stumble on a STOLPERSTEIN and trip thus: “You don’t trip on a STOLPERSTEIN, you stumble with your head and your heart.” Why is there always one STOLPERSTEIN per victim? Gunter Demnig commemorates individuals. The National Socialists wanted to exterminate people, turn them into numbers and erase their memory. Demnig wants to reverse this process and return individual names to places where people once lived. There are cases when hundreds or even thousands of Stolpersteine would have to be installed in a single place. This being effectively impossible and almost unimaginable, Gunter Demnig has come up with an alternative, the STOLPERSCHWELLE (which can be roughly translated as a “Stumbling Threshold”). A STOLPERSCHWELLE can record the fate of a group of victims in a few lines. Like a STOLPERSTEIN, a STOLPERSCHWELLE is 96 mm wide but can be up to one meter in length. -

The Countermonumental perspective embraces and employs multiplicities, peripheries, dispersal and impermanence. The emergence and effectiveness of Countermonumental practices in the sculptural arts portends the possibility of a broader response which seeks to exhume dormant pasts and offer alternate historical perspectives in the present experience of the viewer. In this research thesis and its associated artworks, the study of early German Countermonuments has been undertaken in order to recognize their achievements in reactivating the practice of public memorials and to study the strategies developed by their creators. The research culminates in applied artistic experiments which seek to apply Countermonumental Strategies to other fields of visual art such as photography, moving images, performance, digital media and public art.
