Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions.     A Defense of Parachurch Organization: An Example of a Missional Ecclesiology Mako Nagasawa InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Originally presented to: Fellowship of Asian American Ministers and Ministries (FAAMM), Boston February 21, 2002 The Immediate Question • Why do we have both local churches and on- campus fellowships? – Is it divisive? – Who should do what? – Is it a faithful witness to the unbelieving world? • Usually, the on -campus Christian fellowship is seen as less important – e.g. when students have time conflicts • Parachurch organizations like InterVarsity are seen as less legitimate – Does the parachurch exist only because local churches can’t or aren’t doing enough? One of the biggest problems with addressing this issue is that of defining the parachurch. An accurate and sufficient definition for what constitutes a parachurch ministry requires an investigation into biblica l ecclesiolo gy. The relationship between parachurch ministries and the local and universal church must be established in a time when the lines between them are blurred. Some basic princip les need to be established which describe what constitutes a biblical reason for the creation of parachurch ministries, what guidelines those minis tr ies should follow, and what type of relationship they should maintain with local churches.     Nine Marks of a Healthy Parachurch Ministry Article 03.01.2011 Parachurch ministries are everywhere. From Joel Osteen to John Piper, from Creflo Dollar to Tim Keller, from Joyce Meyer to John MacArthur, it’s difficult to find Christian leaders who don’t lead a parachurch ministry. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, 91,272 non-profit Protestant organizations filled a 990 tax form for Christian work last year. These organizations reported total revenues of $1.8 billion a year, with total assets of over $4 billion. And these billions did not include churches, Christian non-profits which reported less than $25,000 a year, or any of the country’s 106,000 Christian educational institutions. This dizzying array of parachurch ministries feed the hungry, focus on families, evangelize youth, and send missionaries. They publish, lobby, and educate. They broadcast, fund, clothe, and heal. Parachurch ministries serve the Christian community around the world, right down to the parachurch ministry that distributes this very article. The standard cliché for parachurch is that it’s not the church, but an arm of the church. Yet historically, that arm has shown a tendency to develop a mind of its own and crawl away from the body, which creates a mess. Given the grand scope and size of many parachurch ministries, those which go wayward can propagate error for years: missionary organizations become gyms, heretical seminaries pump out heretical pastors, and service organizations produce long-term confusion between the gospel and social action. So what should mark a healthy parachurch? WHAT SHOULD MARK A HEALTHY PARACHURCH? I’ve been involved in parachurch ministry for over three decades.

    THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH AS A MARK OF THE CHURCH Dr. John Hammett Professor of Systematic Theology Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary This paper attempts to bring together the theme of this conference, the mission of the church, and an important theme in the history of ecclesiology, the marks of a true church. It will begin by surveying and evaluating three important formulations of the marks of the church that have been developed over the years. It will then argue that there is a need for a fourth formulation today, and that such a formulation centers around the mission of the church, understood as the church’s mandate to provide certain ministries to bodies of believers. The Patristic Formulation: “We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.” The single most influential statement concerning the church from history comes in the line from the Nicene Creed1 quoted above giving the four classical notae of the church: unity or oneness, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity. These four marks are the starting point for many discussions of the church, and are widely accepted by both Protestants and Catholics.2 We note that this confessional formula emerged in the context of the church’s struggle to define itself against a variety of challengers.3 This origin raises some questions. 1 This line is taken from what is usally referred to as the Nicene Creed, though this line was not in the creed developed at Nicaea in 325, but from an addition to the creed attributed to the Council of Constantinople in 381. Some therefore want to call this form of the creed the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, but the shorter title has prevailed in popular usage.

Introduction Ruth Rouse, a former Anglican missionary, spent eight days in Bucharest as part of a fact-finding journey through Europe for the World Christian Student Federation at the end of January 1911. She found Romanian attitudes to religion completely foreign and inexplicable according to the criteria of British Protestantism. Rouse noted down some of her observations in a report to the Federation. Irreligion prevails amongst the educated. I will not say Agnosticism or Atheism: their irreligion is far too unreasoned and a matter of atmosphere to be classified under one form of unbelief or another. They have simply no interest in religion, no idea that it could possibly have significance for any educated person. Religion is for them dead and gone. Never in any country have I suffered so from the impression that spiritual ideas, however simply expressed, were simply not understood. The church of the country is Orthodox, but can do nothing for educated people. They openly mock at their priests, who are for the most part low-class men, uneducated, sometimes unable to read, often with no form of training for their work except ability to read the services, unpaid, venal, because dependent for their livelihood on fees for religious services, and too often of bad life.

Scheitle Pennsylvania State University Abstract The role of social and symbolic boundaries has a long history in the sociology of religion. These concepts have taken on more importance with the proposition that religious boundaries are in a state of restructuring. I draw upon theory and research on organizations and religion to create hypotheses concerning the creation and structure of religious boundaries. Using a subsample from the National Congregations Study, I analyze the outgoing hyperlinks of 231 congregational websites as a measure of social and symbolic boundaries. The results show a relationship between theological conservatism and excluding other religious groups from a congregation’s boundaries and including religious media, parachurch groups, and religious resources.
