  • On the Hennepin Trail
ON THE HENNEPIN TRAIL^ Of the city of Ath, in the province of Hainault, Belgium, Baedeker says that it is an ancient town but that " it need not detain the tourist long." Baedeker, however, when he made this statement evidently did not have several days on his hands before the steamer sailed from Cherbourg, nor above all did he have the reverential attitude that all dwellers by the Falls of St. Anthony of Padua in the New World ought to have toward Ath as the birthplace of Father Louis Hennepin. In point of fact Baedeker does not mention Hennepin at all. And yet the famous missionary adventurer is not without honor in his own country, as will shortly be seen. Ath has a population of about ten thousand and carries on some little commercial and manufacturing business with the outside world. It is one of those tightly built little towns of narrow streets that one sees everywhere in Belgium; withal a pleasant little city in an equally pleasant setting of gently rolling and carefully cultivated country. Like so many cities in the low countries it has its canal connecting it commercially with the outside world. Its little river, in this case the Dendre, flowing in stretches through walled banks, gives the city a decidedly picturesque air. An occasional pair of wooden shoes rattles along over the cobblestone pavement. There is an ancient church or two, a donjon tower constructed by a cer tain count of Hainault at some time in the remote past, and the usual market place or " cloth market" where on certain days you can bargain with tight-fisted old women for the produce of the country and relieve your ensuing exhaustion at some one of the numerous cafes which line the square.

Cross-border PhD Mobility Application form 2019 Call for UGhent Framework of the mobility grant: In the Interreg project TRANSUNIV (2018-2020), six academic partners join forces to better integrate the labour markets in northern France, Wallonia and Flanders. The project is coordinated by CoMUE Lille Nord de France and has KU Leuven Campus Kulak, Ghent University, UCLouvain FUCaM Mons, the University of Mons and the University of Namur as other partners. The TRANSUNIV project stimulates cross-border cooperations between the partner universities and the socio- economic actors in the French-Walloon-Flemish region. Students and young researchers from the partner institutions will be able to participate in numerous activities (workshops, seminars, mobility,...) that prepare them for cross- border labour mobility. Within this project, mobility funding is foreseen to encourage PhD researchers to conduct part of their research in academic or public institutions and non-academic organizations in this cross-border area. Goal of the mobility grant: Funding for interregional mobility of PhD researchers. PhD researchers can apply for funding for a research stay in an academic or non-academic organisation, e.g. a research group at a university, a laboratory in an R&D company, a traineeship in a non-governmental organisation etc. The host organisation should be located in one of the following arrondissements: France: Cambrai, Douai, Dunkerque, Lille, Valenciennes, Arras, Béthune, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Calais, Lens, Montreuil-sur-Mer, Saint-Omer, Avesnes. Wallonie: Ath, Charleroi, Mons, Mouscron, Soignies, Thuin, Tournai, Namur. The funding aims to promote mobility in the cross-border area as well as to enable to gain a precise apprehension of the modes of action and systems in place outside of their university and beyond their research objective.

  • Commune De Arbre

  • THE PERFECT SIEGE of ATH 1697 the Epitome of Louisquatorzian Siegecraft Was the 1697 Attack on Ath. As with Many Places in the C
CHAPTER TWO THE PERFECT SIEGE OF ATH 1697 The epitome of Louisquatorzian siegecraft was the 1697 attack on Ath. As with many places in the cockpit of Europe, the town’s sov- ereignty changed several times over the course of the late seven- teenth century. Long under Spanish control, its garrison abruptly abandoned the town upon the approach of a French force in June 1667, one of Louis’ many effortless victories during the unnaturally short War of Devolution. It would remain in French hands until it was returned, with substantial improvements, to the Spaniards at the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678, along with several fortresses in the pré carré, a double barrier of fortresses defending France’s northern bor- der from the Channel to the Meuse (see Map 2.1 at the end of the chapter). When the Nine Years’ War broke out in 1688, Ath wit- nessed the usual depredations of partisans and troops billeted in gar- rison, but it only became the focus of both belligerents in 1697. Ath itself might never have been besieged in 1697 had the peace negotiations started in 1695 and convened more formally at Rijswijk (Ryswick) the next year taken hold. Waging war while discussing peace was common in an era of fluid coalition warfare, and the rar- ity of decisive military victories only reinforced both sides’ willing- ness to keep fighting. When one of Louis XIV’s enemies, Vittorio II Amadeo, Duke of Savoy abandoned his allies for neutrality in late 1696, Louis saw this as an opportunity to push the issue in the Spanish Netherlands the next year.
