Jargon File, Version 4.0.0, 24 Jul 1996
JARGON FILE, VERSION 4.0.0, 24 JUL 1996 This is the Jargon File, a comprehensive compendium of hacker slang illuminating many aspects of hackish tradition, folklore, and humor. This document (the Jargon File) is in the public domain, to be freely used, shared, and modified. There are (by intention) no legal restraints on what you can do with it, but there are traditions about its proper use to which many hackers are quite strongly attached. Please extend the courtesy of proper citation when you quote the File, ideally with a version number, as it will change and grow over time. (Examples of appropriate citation form: "Jargon File 4.0.0" or "The on-line hacker Jargon File, version 4.0.0, 24 JUL 1996".) The Jargon File is a common heritage of the hacker culture. Over the years a number of individuals have volunteered considerable time to maintaining the File and been recognized by the net at large as editors of it. Editorial responsibilities include: to collate contributions and suggestions from others; to seek out corroborating information; to cross-reference related entries; to keep the file in a consistent format; and to announce and distribute updated versions periodically. Current volunteer editors include: Eric Raymond [email protected] Although there is no requirement that you do so, it is considered good form to check with an editor before quoting the File in a published work or commercial product. We may have additional information that would be helpful to you and can assist you in framing your quote to reflect not only the letter of the File but its spirit as well. -
Computer Graphics and Computer Animation: a Retrospective Overview
The GUI and the personal computer As far as the customer is concerned, the interface is the product. An interface is humane if it is responsive to human needs and considerate of human frailties. Jef Raskin 479 16.1 Xerox PARC In 1975 the researchers at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) moved into their permanent headquarters at 3333 Coyote Hill Road near Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Jacob Goldman had founded PARC just five years previous, and already at this early date the research team had developed many of the ideas that shaped 1 the future of computing. The Palo Alto Research Center’s mission as directed by Xerox management was to create the office of the future. To that end they created many of the technologies we take for granted in the modern office, such as networked personal computers, with email, word processing, and laser printing, but the most significant innovation at PARC was thegraphical user interface (GUI), the desktop metaphor that is so prevalent in modern personal computing today. The GUI would make computer graphics an everyday part of the working environment. No longer would the display be simply lines of code and commands, it would be graphical with a true representation of typefaces and images. The bitmapped GUI display would help promote the concept of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) allowing people to laser print exactly what they saw on the screen. 1. Thanks to graduate students John Buck and Jon Gladden for their contributions to this chapter. 480 16.1 XEROX PARC • 481 In workstations of the past, graphics and commands where split between three different screens, a vector device for line graphics, a text display for entering commands, and a video / raster graphics screen coupled with a frame buffer to display the final rendered result. -

Take out your phone. Start typing a text message. How are the characters and words represented (Chapter 12)? How does the phone calculate how many more characters you can type in the message (Chapter 10)? Attach a photo. How is an image stored inside the phone (Chapter 13)? Send the message and image across the wireless network. How is the information sent quickly (Chapter 16) and how are errors prevented (Chapter 15)? How is the phone’s software designed (Chapters 6, 19)? Even with such a small processor, how were the designers able to make sure it would perform fast enough (Chapter 20)? Imagine the insides of the phone. -
But Their Fundamental Operation Has Remained Much the Same
1 www.onlineeducation.bharatsevaksamaj.net www.bssskillmission.in PRINCIPLES OF COMPUTER ARCHITECTURES Topic Objective: At the end of this topic student would be able to: Understand Discrete transistor and IC CPUs Understand Early CPU Design Learn about CPU composed of only four LSI integrated circuits Learn about CPU operation Learn about CPU Integer range Understand Clock rate Learn about Parallelism Learn about Instruction level parallelism Learn about Thread level parallelism Learn about Data parallelism Definition/Overview: Central Processing Unit (CPU): A central processing unit (CPU) is an electronic circuit that can execute computer programs. This broad definition can easily be applied to many early computers that existed long before the term "CPU" ever came into widespread usage. The term itself and its initialism have been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s. The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples,WWW.BSSVE.IN but their fundamental operation has remained much the same. Key Points: 1. Early CPU Design Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, sometimes one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are suited for one or many purposes. This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and www.bsscommunitycollege.in www.bssnewgeneration.in www.bsslifeskillscollege.in 2 www.onlineeducation.bharatsevaksamaj.net www.bssskillmission.in manufactured to tolerances on the order of nanometers. -
Dynamically Generated Assembly Blitter for S40 Mobile Phones
DYNAMICALLY GENERATED ASSEMBLY BLITTER FOR S40 MOBILE PHONES Heikki Hellgren Bachelor‘s thesis Spring 2011 Information Technology and Telecommunications Oulu University of Applied Sciences ABSTRACT Oulu University of Applied Sciences Information Technology and Telecommunications Author(s): Heikki Hellgren Title of Bachelor‘s thesis: DYNAMICALLY GENERATED ASSEMBLY BLITTER FOR S40 MOBILE PHONES Supervisor(s): Mr. Markku Rahikainen (OUAS), Mr. Mikko Polojärvi (Nokia Corporation) Term and year of completion: Spring 2011 Number of pages: 49 + 6 appendices This bachelor‘s thesis was done for Nokia Corporation S40 Mobile Phones. In this thesis, the problems and possible solutions were discussed for fast two-dimensional software graphics processing. The objective of the study was to design, implement and test a software graphics processing component created by using dynamically generated assembly. The target of the software component created is mobile phones with a processor following the ARM11 processor family architecture. The objective of this thesis came from the actual needs for faster software graphics processing in S40 Mobile Phones. Before starting this thesis, the author had some previous experience of S40 architecture and computer graphics in general. The problems and solutions of this thesis were researched by studying previous implementations of two dimensional software graphics components and by doing a great deal of pre-studying of computer graphics literature. The Results of this bachelor‘s thesis were significant. Most of the graphics processing cases benchmarked were much faster compared to a previous implementation. Further development of the work includes tweaking the performance of the most used use cases, implementation of support for other processor architectures and expanding the software component with new features. -
