DAVID KARP TUMBLR Sarah McWilliams TUMBLR HISTORY The website officially launched in 2007 Acquired Tumblrette in 2009 and a mobile app became available for Blackberry users in 2010 (now offered for Apple and Android users) In 2012, Tumblr started banning blogs that were pro-self harm, suicide, or eating disorders 2013: Yahoo acquires Tumblr for $1.1 billion. The website is worth $800M ABOUT Born in July 1986 – he’s not even 31 yet! Started learning HTML when he was 11 and started homeschooling when he was 15 and got an internship with an animation company called Frederator Studios. He got a Job with UrbanBaby doing web developing before moving to Japan when he was 17. He invested in a company called Davidville in 2006 and with help from Marco Arment, created Tumblr in the same year before making the website public in 2007. Joined the Planned Parenthood Board of Directors in 2014 BUSINESS MODEL 68% of tumblr’s users are 34 and under, and Karp knows this. He tries to grow the company as his users grow, something he called “aligned growth” Karp also believes in autonomy. This allows his team to create on their own and do the right things in regards to Tumblr users. Karp keeps his company community-oriented. Its easy for the Tumblr community to engage with the staff and vice versa. The staff shares the users excitement for things and communicates with users to let them know that they (the staff) is excited too. MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY Karp does not keep a schedule, except for board meetings and Monday morning team meetings. He says “appointments are caustic to creativity.” Karp likes to keep open communication channels with users as to better understand what it is they like and don’t like. He doesn’t check emails until he gets into the office, and keeps them in separate files for better organization.

In this conversation, he talks about influences in his academic career and memories; culture; key intellectual choices. Considered to be a "serial ethnographer" who has worked in multiple ethnography; settings, his work focuses on small groups and peopled ethnography, as well as on rumors, gossip, group; interaction; and moral story telling in tiny and larger publics. FINE describes his core theoretical interest as narrative; rumor; residing in the interplay of structure, interaction, and culture and discusses the multiple local ways social theory; society is realized by people in formal and informal social settings: ranging from baseball teams, social worlds; restaurant kitchens, weather reporting to chess players—to name but a few research sites. structure Influenced by symbolic interactionist thinking and other important approaches to social worlds, he argues for a confident voice of ethnographic research and writing as well as the importance of conceptual work in a theory-informed empirical sociology of what people do together.     THE “NEW” NEW YORK TIMES: FREE SPEECH LAWYERING IN THE AGE OF GOOGLE AND TWITTER Marvin Ammori INTRODUCTION When Ben Lee was at Columbia Law School in the 1990s, he spent three months as a summer associate at the law firm then known as Lord, Day & Lord, which had represented the New York Times1 in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan.2 During those months, Lee listened to the firm’s elder partners recount gripping tales of the Sullivan era and depict their role in the epic speech battles that shaped the future of free expression. Hearing these stories, a young Lee dreamed that one day he too would participate in the country’s leading speech battles and have a hand in writing the next chapter in freedom of expression. When I met with Lee in August 2013, forty-nine years after Sulli- van, he was working on freedom of expression as the top lawyer at Twitter. Twitter and other Internet platforms have been heralded for creating the “new media,”3 what Professor Yochai Benkler calls the “networked public sphere,”4 for enabling billions around the world to publish and read instantly, prompting a world where anyone — you and I included — can be the media simply by breaking, recounting, or spreading news and commentary.5 Today, freedom of the press means ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Fellow, New America Foundation; Partner, the Ammori Group.     NMEDIAC : Winter 2013-14 Reblogging Fashion: Participatory curation on Tumblr (pdf version) Lisa Ehlin Stockholm University Abstract This article aims to discuss the aesthetic quality, visual experience and social practice of the microblog platform Tumblr. Having passed the 100 million blogs mark, the service has been increasingly prominent online since its launch in 2007. Thus, fashion, mass media and memory institutions as well as other more individual forms of visual expression have found the platform particularity interesting as a source for communication and networking. Disputing Jodi Dean’s argument that blogging is an expression of our constantly shifting identities and provoking us to exhibitionism, this article proposes blogging and reblogging on Tumblr as a type of creative curation where digital images and content are in constant flux but always temporarily fixed through the reblog button, re-creating through different contexts and part of identity formations, rather than effects of them. Moreover, fashion is crucial in understanding Tumblr’s appeal, not just by way of the style blogs and fashion focus of the site and the ambiguities of its execution, but also in the very force, which drives the blogging in the first place, a desire or addictive yearning. The platform is arguably unique in providing active user participation through anonymity, dialogue, and alternative spaces for interaction and community with a mixture of attention, production and expression, making Tumblr a central case for the future of content curation online.     "Steve Jobs and Willy Wonka to me were just like these brilliant people who had these magical factories where every six months they'd come out with this huge show," David Karp told me a few years ago. "I thought that was like the coolest thing ever. That's what I wanted to do." And now, it seems, he just might have done it. Karp, of course, is the 26-year-old autodidact who founded Tumblr, the social-networking blog site. Karp isn't your typical internet entrepreneur. He grew up in New York, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and attended the Calhoun School, where his mother was a science teacher. At Calhoun, Karp drove teachers nuts1 by trying to hack2 into the school's computer system. After leaving, he spent a year at the Bronx High School of Science, where he studied Japanese. But he fell in with the wrong crowd and dropped out3 – besting4 technology giants such as Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison and Mark Zuckerberg, who all timidly waited until after entering college to abandon their formal education. By then, Karp had read a book about HTML software and had helped small businesses build websites. As a 14-year-old, he worked at Tekserve, a huge, hipster-laden5 Apple-repair specialist. Soon enough, Karp was introduced to Fred Seibert, a former jazz-music record executive who became one of the creative founders of MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. "I was so nervous and not sure what to say," Karp said about meeting Seibert. But he remembered being very impressed by Seibert, dressed all in white, hanging out in this cool office space with a bunch4 of tech geeks, trying to change the world.

    CHAPTER EIGHT Improbable Curators: Analysing Nostalgia, Authorship and Audience on Tumblr Microblogs Dinu Gabriel Munteanu Bournemouth University Introduction Launched in 2007 and hosting around 280 million blogs as of February 2016, Tumblr1 is one of the most popular yet under-researched microblogging plat- forms currently in existence. Having established itself as a premier venue of online popular and youth culture (Dewey, 2015), the service provides an idi- osyncratic synesthetic space wherein countless visual and stylistic statements are shared daily, ranging from digital images to literary excerpts, journal entries to animations. The absence of subordinating vertical structures (there exists no real ‘mainstream’ vs. ‘underground’ dynamic here), the possibility of interpret- ing the blogs both as niche and micro youth media (see Thornton, 1995, pp. 137-151) and the socially interactive element of these unregulated exchanges all reflects a parallel world rich in psycho-social connotations that remains largely uncharted by social scientists. These leaders come from the Millennial and Generation X generations and are among the most successful entrepreneurs today.
