Three varieties, bigibbum , superbum and compactum . Dendrobium bigibbum is highly variable and many forms exist. Note one example with white tips. Cultivation: water copiously in summer and refrain from watering in winter. Fertilise with high nitrogen from September until New Year. Then low nitrogen until end of flowering. Needs good air and good drainage. Grow under 50% shade. Dendrobium bigibbum var. bigibbum • Northern Cape York Peninsular, Torres Strait Is, Papua New Guinea. • Stunted coastal scrub, low trees, rocks, monsoon forests, along gullies. • Light lilac-purple with predominant white spot in throat of labellum. Molloy. • Epiphyte, coastal scrubs, littoral forests, by swamps and gullies in more open forests. • Lilac-purple in colour. Larger, flatter. Opens widely. • Colour variants – white and blue. • Cultivars - Albomarginata – with a white edge. - Hololeucum – white with a green throat. - Album – white. - W. Parton – Sepals are darker than the petals. Usually flat. • Colour variants – white and blue. 1 named cultivar- Blue Moon. From Sea Level to 1000m. Can grow in full sun. • Quite hardy. Forms extensive mats. • Cultivation – On slab. Copious water in summer but less in winter. Grow under 50% shade. Fertilizer – low nitrogen in warmer months. Cattleya bowringiana • Central America – Honduras, Guatamala, Belize. • Epip hyte, lithophyte. Along streams and on cliffs often in full sun. • Requires bright light and humid conditions. • Cultivation, In pot. Medium bark but with good drainage. Water twice a week in the warmer months and once every ten days in the cooler months. Fertilize with high nitrogen three consecutive weeks and with low nitrogen the fourth week. Flower booster in January and February does help. Ceratostylis retisquama Neolehmannia porpax Dockrillia bowmanii • epiphyte, occasionally as a lithophyte • mostly lowlands but has been recorded at moderate altitudes • Clarence River in North Eastern NSW to Herbert River in North Eastern Qld. It can be found growing on the coastal plains some distance from the sea in it southern region. In the Northern region it can be found growing on the off shore Islands. It grows on trees & rocks where it receives moderate light, & a reasonable amount of rain. Dockrillia bowmanii • East Coast of Australia from Atherton Tableland to Clarence Rover. • Coastal scrubs, drier edges of rain forests, open country. • Flowers sporadically with flushes in spring and autumn. All plants in a region flower at the same time –synchronous flowering. • Cultivation – On slab. Good air. At least 50%shade. Fertilize with low nitrogen in warmer months. Micropera apiculata • epiphyte • Sea level to 1000m • Java, Sumatra, Borneo, growing in bright sunlight on the upper branches of trees. Dendrochilum microchilum • Epiphyte • 500 to 2400m • Philippines (endemic) where it is found in several Provinces. It grows on rainforest trees in filtered light. Brassavola cordata Coelogyne carinata • epiphyte • Low Altitude • Papua New Guinea. Growing in the wet rain forest on trunks & major lower limbs in filtered light. Flowers throughout the year. • Cultivation – On slab. Copious water in summer but less in winter. In full sun. Fertilize – low nitrogen in warmer months. (September to April – May) .
