His works of art tell of revolt and resistance, of injustice and hope, of fellahins and modest people. They speak of revolution, of equality between man 1951 – Le grand-père, 32 x 22cm, lithographie and woman, of death and spirituality… He drew his subjects from Egypt, his native land, from its Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic past and from its everyday life in the streets and the coffee-houses… For more than fifty years, Hamed Abdalla worked relentlessly, leaving behind him a big amount of paintings, drawings and lithographs that witness today of an ongoing research and a creation that knew no boundaries. Moreover, Hamed Abdalla left many writings for beyond drawing and painting, the man cultivated his art theory and had a passion for philosophy. Herbert Gentry Herbert Gentry: Paris and Beyond 1949-1978 November 14, 2020 – January 23, 2021 RYAN LEE is pleased to announce Herbert Gentry: Paris and Beyond 1949-1978, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Herbert Gentry. Spanning from 1949 to 1978, the exhibition surveys the European years of a remarkable career that bridged the Atlantic and resulted in culturally important works reflecting the artist’s cultural fluidity, artistic innovation, and lifelong position as an art community leader. This will be the gallery’s first exhibition of Gentry’s work, in cooperation with the artist’s estate. A Harlem native, Gentry was an important figure in the post-war European art scene, which he marked via his own vividly gestural canvases, and his remarkable role in fostering transcontinental relations between American artists and their European counterparts. “Gentry was among those American painters in Paris, who, beginning in the early 1950s, helped introduce the American concept of gesture, free invention, and the vivid dissonances of color to the European sensibilities,” Romare Bearden wrote in 1982, “The style was then known in Paris as ‘the school of the pacific’ and, in this country, of course, as ‘Abstract Expressionism.’” Molded by the teachings of George Braque, jazz music and the extraordinary tempo of post- war Paris, Gentry’s art reflects the cultural crossroad on which he built his career. His own role as a significant cultural and community leader among expatriated artists, poets, philosophers, musicians and writers in Paris, and, later, Scandinavian capitals, shaped his own artistic outlook, which followed the principle that an artist, as an inherently social being, produces work that is subconsciously molded by the social impulses surrounding him or her. -

Mauro Corona, La casa dei sette ponti, Milano, 20121 This volume marks the first in a new monographic series, Bridges, whose aim is to publish the results of the bilateral projects the National Research Council of Italy under- takes with various foreign scientific institutions. The series can be further organized into differing sub-sections, related to the countries involved. The present publication – the first volume in theBridges: Italy Montenegro series – gives an account of the numerous joint-research projects that since 2015 the CNR has conducted with Montenegrin institutions belonging to the Ministry of Sciences and Ministry of Culture of Montenegro. The main topics are related to cultural heritage studies dealing with matters both physical and intangible, with particular reference to the more innovative methodologies and technologies. Already in an advanced stage of preparation is the second volume in this series. Edited by Carla Sfameni and Tatjana Koprivica, it concerns the history of the Italian involvement in the archaeology of Montenegro from the 19th century to the present day. The history of the CNR participation in Montenegro is very recent. In 2013, a first scientific agreement was signed by the former CNR President, Professor Luigi Nicolais, 1 ‘He liked bridges, they unify separate entities, as a handshake joins two persons. Bridges sew up torn holes, fill in empty gaps, and bring far-off things nearer’. -

Oral Tradition, 25/2 (2010): 325-363 “Secret Language” in Oral and Graphic Form: Religious-Magic Discourse in Aztec Speeches and Manuscripts Katarzyna Mikulska Dąbrowska Introduction On the eve of the conquest, oral communication dominated Mesoamerican society, with systems similar to those defined by Walter Ong (1992 [1982]), Paul Zumthor (1983), and Albert Lord (1960 [2000]), although a written form did exist. Its limitations were partly due to the fact that it was used only by a limited group of people (Craveri 2004:29), and because the Mixtec and Nahua systems do not totally conform to a linear writing system.1 These forms of graphic communication are presented in pictographic manuscripts, commonly known as codices. The analysis of these sources represents an almost independent discipline, as they increasingly become an ever more important source for Mesoamerican history, religion, and anthropology. The methodology used to study them largely depends on how the scholar defines “writing.” Some apply the most rigid definition of a system based on the spoken language and reflecting its forms and/or structures (e.g., Coulmas 1996:xxvi), while others accept a broader definition of semasiographic systems that can transmit ideas independent of actual spoken language (yet function at the same logical level) and thus also constitute writing (e.g., Sampson 1985:26-31). The aim of this study is to analyze the linguistic “magical-religious” register of the Nahua people, designated as such because it was used for communication with the sacred realm. In this respect, it represents one of the “sacred languages,” as classified by Zumthor (1983:53). -
