During the last few years, conventional karyotyping was found to be inadequate because the various ban ding techniques ofIer much more precise information. Unfortu nately, it is not feasible to induce banding from old slides, so that wh at was reported with conventional straining methods must remain until new material can be obtained. We present, in this volume, a few of these. We consider presenting the ban ding patterns of a few more important species such as man, mouse, rat, etc., in our future volumes. As complete sets (male and female ) of karyotypes are more and more diffi cult to come by, we begin to place two species in the same genus on one plate. -

Abstract The ability to account with precision for the quantitative variation in the basal rate of metabolism (BMR) at the species level is explored in four groups of endotherms, arvicoline rodents, ducks, melaphagid honeyeaters, and phyllostomid bats. An effective analysis requires the inclusion of the factors that distinguish species and their responses to the conditions they encounter in the environment. These factors are implemented by changes in body composition and are responsible for the non-conformity of species to a scaling curve. Two concerns may limit an analysis. The factors correlatedDraft with energy expenditure often correlate with each other, which usually prevents them from being included together in an analysis, thereby preventing a complete analysis, implying the presence of factors other than mass. -

The primary emphasis of this work has been to in- vestigate the effects of BFC on birds of prey through secondary poison- ing. The hazard level of BFC to raptors should be dependent on the levels found in post-treatment collections of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). -

Its ears and legs are short and it has pale feet. It has a cylindrical shape (like a toilet paper roll) with a tail that is 1/3 the length of the body. fun facts California Voles make paths through the grasslands leading to the mouths of their underground burrows. These surface "runways" are worn into the grass by daily travel. When chased by a predator, a vole can make a fast dash for the safety of its underground burrow using these cleared runways. If you walk quickly across the grassland you will often surprise a California Vole and see it scurry to its burrow. life cycle California Voles reach maturity in one month. Female voles have litters of four to eight young. In areas with abundant food and mild weather, each female can have up to five litters in a year. ecology The California Vole can dig its own underground burrow system but it often begins by using Pocket Gopher burrows. The tunnels are usually 1 to 5 meters long and up to one half meter below ground, with a nesting den somewhere inside. The ends of the burrows are left open. Many insects, spiders, centipedes, and other animals live in their burrows. Thus, the California Vole creates habitat for other species and the Pocket Gopher improves habitat for the vole. -

1 CHAPTER 6134 DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES ENDANGERED, THREATENED, SPECIAL CONCERN SPECIES 6134.0100 STATUTORY AUTHORITY. 6134.0150 PURPOSE AND SCOPE. 6134.0170 SPECIES NAMES. 6134.0200 ANIMAL SPECIES. 6134.0300 VASCULAR PLANTS. 6134.0400 LICHENS; MOSSES; LIVERWORTS; FUNGI. 6134.0100 STATUTORY AUTHORITY. Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 84.0895, the species of wild animals and plants listed in parts 6134.0200 to 6134.0400 are designated as endangered, threatened, or of special concern, as indicated in those parts. Statutory Authority: MS s 84.0895 History: 8 SR 1921; L 1986 c 386 art 4 s 9 Published Electronically: June 11, 2008 6134.0150 PURPOSE AND SCOPE. Minnesota Statutes, section 84.0895, subdivision 3, requires the commissioner of natural resources to adopt rules designating species meeting the statutory definitions of endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. Minnesota Statutes, section 84.0895, subdivision 5, authorizes the commissioner to adopt rules that regulate treatment of species designated as endangered or threatened. Thus, two different sets of rules have been adopted: parts 6134.0100 to 6134.0400 designate species in the three statutory categories; and parts 6212.1800 to 6212.2300 create regulations for species designated as endangered or threatened. Species designated as species of special concern are not protected by Minnesota Statutes, section 84.0895 or rules adopted under that section. Parts 6212.1800 to 6212.2300 and Minnesota Statutes, section 84.0895, impose a variety of restrictions, a permit program, and several exemptions pertaining to species designated as endangered or threatened. Among these are that acts otherwise prohibited may be allowed by permit issued by the commissioner; plants on certain agricultural lands and plants destroyed in consequence of certain agricultural practices are exempt; and the accidental, unknowing destruction of designated plants is exempt.
