I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

tV ~I STRAT-O-MATIC pl.-'I REVIEW .t i Devoted exclusively to the ~ strat-O-J>laticgame fans, with the consent of the Strat -O-Matic Game Co. I Vol. II-5 July 1972 35¢ SOM Plans Football Changes Credit Review readers and the changing style of professional football with assists for the changes in this year's SOM foottall carets and rules. Harold Richman, the games' creator, after much research and consioeration, decided that two suggestions from Review readers had enough merit to incorporate into the game. One suggestion, which was originally printed in the September, 1971 issue of the Review came from Andrew Fischer. From now on when the defense is in the "pass prevent" defense with both outside line- backers dropping back out of their zones, if the offense throws a flat pass into a vacated zone and the dice roll comes up on the offensive card - you will now look in the 5~essed wrong column (before, you would have looked in the guessed right column). The second idea, sent in by many readers, was to individualize ki.ck-aof'f's, Well, this year it will be done. For instance, if a team only had 6~J of its kick-offs returned., that's about all that will be run back with this year's cards. The rest of the changes reflect changes in professional football itself. 1) Now it will be possible to return a missed field goal. If an attempted field goal is ~ from the 33-42 yard range and the number rolled is 4, 5, 6, or 10, the kick may be returned by the ·#1 kick return man.

  • The Glynn West Baseball Memorabilia Collection in the Words of Candy West Introduction to Glynn West Glynn West Wasn't a Famou
The Glynn West Baseball Memorabilia Collection in the words of Candy West Introduction to Glynn West Glynn West wasn’t a famous baseball player. He wasn’t a big league manager or flashy major league executive. He certainly wasn’t an autograph seeker or collector. Glynn West was a humble, soft-spoken man who devoted his life to his family first and baseball second. It was a very close second, but family really did come first. So much so that when Charles Finley offered him the GM position in Oakland with the newly relocated A’s, Dad turned him down; he didn’t want to uproot his young family. So Dad stayed in Birmingham, at Rickwood Field, where he’d worked since 1947. His first job was changing the scoreboard, humble beginnings for a man who would go on to become The Sporting News’ Double A Executive of the Year, Birmingham’s GM, the Southern League’s VP, and Finley’s #1 pick for a franchise that would go on to win three consecutive World Series. Intro to entire collection Going through the baseball stuff in a thorough manner was never on my to-do list largely because I didn't know there was much to go through. After all, Dad wasn’t a collector by any stretch of the definition. Digging through the basement, attic, looking in closets and under beds for stuff to sell on eBay, I started to find lots of cool baseball things. Lots of cool baseball things. I started researching the things I found. With every “new” find, I hurled myself off higher and higher cliffs of obscure dusty minor league minutiae.
