Gaudiya Vaishnava Festival Calendar (2014 – 2015) All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga Gaudiya Vaishnava Festival Calendar (2014 – 2015) Founder Acharya—Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj President Acharya—Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj Successor Acharya—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math London, United Kingdom All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga Gaudiya Vaishnava Festival Calendar 2014 to 2015 - Sri Gaurabda 529 This calendar is based on the translation of the Bengali Vaisnava Calendar, "Sri Gaudiya Parvva Talika," compiled by Sriyukta Dibyendu Bhattacharyya, M.Sc., B.T., Jyotibhushan, Headmaster. Translated to English by Sripad Bhakti Kamal Tyagi Maharaj. All dates and times listed here are calculated for Kolkata, India, as referred to at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, Sri Nabadwip Dham. Ekadasi dates and paran times are calculated for London, United Kingdom by Sri Devashis Das with corrections by Sri Natabara Das. In this way the days of Appearance, Disappearance, and other Pastimes of the Lord and His great devotees will be observed on the actual day they took place in India, rather than according to the technical local calculation of the 'tithi' (lunar day) which often had devotees observing, for example, the Appearance of Mahaprabhu a day before He actually appeared in Nabadwip. • To Be Controlled by Love | English
TO BE CONTROLLED BY LOVE THERE IS NO HAPPINESS IN THIS WORLD You know that everyone wants to be happy. All living entities want happiness, but this world is arranged so that no one will ever be happy here. We cannot be happy. You should realise that there is no happiness and no tranquillity in this world. Even if a man is wealthy and has all facility for happiness, still some problem or dangerous sickness will disturb him. We may not be weak while we are young, but many diseases appear as we get older. Even if one has no diseases, there are many other problems. His wife may become sick; another relative or a friend may have cancer or tuberculosis; and someone else has another disease or some other problem. This world is arranged so that we always have a rope around our neck, and at some point it starts to tighten. This is because we have forgotten Krishna. As long as we are not endeavouring for Krishna consciousness, we will be more and more unhappy, with more problems, for many lifetimes. This is the truth, hut we can only understand all this by the grace of the disciplic succession. That is called Vedic authority. THE MOST VALID AUTHORITY Whom can we believe regarding what is good and what is bad? We must have some authority who is very kind and selfless, and in whom we can believe. The Vedic literatures such as the Vedas, Upanisads and Srimad-Bhagavatam are like that, but they cannot speak directly to us.

  • Women Saints in Gaudiya Vaishnavism
Women Saints in Gaudiya Vaishnavism - Jagadananda Das - There are few traditional societies in which women have played a dominant historical role. In this respect, Gaudiya Vaishnavism is no different. The egalitarianism of bhakti movements, which stress the universality of devotion and deny any disqualifications based on birth, sex, or caste, seems to have had limited real effects on the actual social circumstances of any of these classes of people. There are some, including the eminent Bengali historian, Ramakanta Chakravarti, who feel that the status of women was improved in Chaitanya Vaishnavism, mainly due to the singular example of Jahnava Devi. (1) Indeed, it does appear that literacy rates among women (and men) in Vaishnava castes in Bengal were somewhat higher than in other, comparable groups, but this evidence is far from overwhelming. Today, some women may be found playing the role of guru, especially ministering to other women, and there are some Chaitanya Vaishnava women who sing padavali kirtan or give discourses on Vaishnava texts. On the whole, however, despite their dominant numbers at most religious events, the role of women continues to be a supporting one and subordinate to that of men. One question that needs analysis is whether the importance of Radha in the Vaishnava pantheon and the general weight given to the female principle and feminine virtues in the Gaudiya Vaishnava culture has had any influence on the status of women. Many feminist analysts have pointed out that the worship of goddesses has no proven relation to any such amelioration in societies where such worship is conducted.

  • If You Want to Know the Lord, Become Acaryavan
If you want to know the Lord, become acaryavan If you want to know the Lord, become acaryavan ISKCON Vrindavan We welcome all the assembled devotees and thank you for being with us this morning to hear Srimad Bhagavatam canto nine chapter eleven text number one. I already gave a little indication and I’m sure you heard the announcement this morning. Today is Srila Jiva Goswami’s disappearance day festival. So we will do a Bhagavatam verse and also we must remember Srila Jiva Goswami. Today is a very special day. Please repeat: Sri Suka Uvaca bhagavan atmanatmanam rama uttama-kalpakaih sarva-devamayam devam ije athacaryavan makhaih Translation and purport by SrilaPrabhupada ki Jai. Sukadeva Gosvami said: Thereafter, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Ramacandra, accepted an acarya and performed sacrifices [yajnas] with opulent paraphernalia. Thus He Himself worshiped Himself, for He is the Supreme Lord of all demigods. Purport: Sarvarhanam acyutejya. If Acyuta, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is worshiped, then everyone is worshiped. As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam yathatarormula-nisecanena trpyanti tat-skandha-bhujopasakhah pranopaharac ca yathendriyanam tathaiva sarvarhanam acyutejya [SB 4.31.13] “As pouring water on the root of a tree nourishes the trunk, branches, twigs and leaves, and as supplying food to the stomach enlivens the senses and limbs of the body, worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead satisfies the demigods, who are part of that Supreme Personality.” Performing yajna involves worshiping the Supreme Lord. Here the Supreme Lord worshiped the Supreme Lord. Therefore it is said, bhagavan atmanatmanam ije: the Lord worshiped Himself by Himself.
