  • Harry Connick, Jr
Harry Connick, Jr. Music From The Motion Picture When Harry Met Sally… Recorded: RCA Studio B, New York City; June 6, 12 & 19, 1989 Label: Columbia/CBS Records Producers: Marc Shaiman & Harry Connick, Jr. Chief Recording and Mixing Engineer: Tim Geelan Release date: July 25, 1989 As we close out the year and are in the midst of the holiday season, it is fitting to discuss a film (and its timeless soundtrack) whose story spans the relationship of its characters over many seasons and holidays. On July 21, 1989, When Harry Met Sally opened at theatres. Unlike most romantic comedies with the traditional sappy storyline, the witty dialogue and observational humor throughout the characters’ romantic miseries is both candid and heartfelt. Though this review is on the music and soundtrack, it is difficult to discuss most soundtracks without briefly discussing the movie itself. The choice of music for any great film is a function of the storyline. For those not familiar with the movie (one of my all-time favorites) When Harry Met Sally looks at all the common relational struggles and miseries between men and women - dating, marriage, loneliness, sex without love, and simply trying to understand and communicate with the opposite sex. It stars Billy Crystal (Harry Burns) and Meg Ryan (Sally Albright) in the title roles. Harry and Sally first meet as recent graduates at the University of Chicago. They drive together to New York to begin their careers, instigating a basic antagonism/attraction based on their conflicting personalities and outlooks on life. Sally has the fresh-faced sunny disposition, always trying to see things in the best light.

  • A Century of Song: the Evolution of Musical Theatre Music an Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) Andy Pickerill Thesis Advisor Michael
Pickerill 1 A Century ofSong: The Evolution ofMusical Theatre Music An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Andy Pickerill Thesis Advisor Michael Elliott BaH State University Muncie, IN April 2012 Expected Date of Graduation May 2012 r L" t I, d e l ;; ~r'{ 1/ ' • I • Pickerill 2 Abstract The art of musical theatre is constantly changing. Throughout its century of existence, the musical has taken many forms and so has its music. The music in musical theatre has always been in a constant state of evolution. Early musical theatre music was influenced by ragtime and operetta. As jazz gained popularity in the 20s and 30s, it dominated Broadway. By the 1940s, music's focus was not to merely entertain but to help further the plot. Music of this era was still influenced by jazz, but Broadway had already developed its own sound. In the 1960s and 1970s, composers began exploring other genres of music, especially rock. By the 1990s, Broadway's biggest hits had a contemporary pop sound, although the traditional Broadway sound can still be heard. This project involved a recital of selections from all eras of musical theatre presented in Pruis Hall on April 15,2012. Pieces represented various composers, musical styles, and subject matter. Acknowledgements I would like first to think my advisor, Michael Elliott. His constant support and knowledge was instrumental in the development of this thesis. Without him, the singing of so many songs in such a short period of time would have been impossible. Secondly, I would like to thank Erin Oechsel who sang in the recital and Hyunyoung Hwang who accompanied.

  • Blending Voices
BLENDING VOICES A SCRAPBOOK OF STORIES AND PICTURES FROM A GROUP SINGER BY JACK BROPHY FORWARD As you take this scrapbook in hand, be prepared for an enjoyable read, with humor a major theme. It also will be clear that serious sentiments are central to Jack’s stories. You will feel how his music-making with groups over the years has helped to alleviate the suffering of tornado victims, and responded to the elderly for its soothing effect. You will know how school children have benefited as a result of some of the funds generated by these performances. So while this narrative of Jack’s musical life is written with a light touch, it reveals how profoundly important music is to him. These are reminiscences of music expressed mainly by voices raised in song, particularly small groups. The goal in each instance was to achieve a special harmonic blend to create a single unified voice. Jack explains that, on occasion, he has selected harmonic team players over accomplished soloists. Jack and I grew up in Pelham, NY. As a frequent guest in his parents’ summer cottage (Merriewold), I was aware always of the presence of music and laughter. The Merriewold experiences surely were an essential part of Jack’s life-long passion for harmony and humor. Mom Brophy was an accomplished pianist, as were Jack’s sisters, Babs and Patty. Older sister Babs helped introduce Frank Sinatra’s music to our generation. I was privileged to know Pat during the years she spent as a professional cabaret pianist/singer. On one occasion, I was attending a convention in New Orleans.
