Volume 51, Issue 1 The Official Publication of the Washington State Archery Association JANUARY 2021 Highlights Finding Success Special Pull-Out By Stephanie Rustad @The.Archer.Steph Throughout the years, I have eaten tag soup Officers, Board and Committee Chairs more than I have enjoyed fresh backstraps. Clubs and Shops List A friend recently commented that I was spending a lot of money on tags, camo, and gas WSAA Calendar 2021 on an activity that doesn’t seem to “bring home the WSAA Blueface bacon”. They only saw that I was returning home with Mail-In Registration an empty ice chest. What they missed was everything else that makes a hunt. To me, a successful hunt varies with each trip. Sometimes it is finding a new area that has potential, or receiving permission to hunt private property. Other times it’s seeing an animal on the last day, even if it is 1,000 yards away. Success could be getting within shooting range of a legal Above: Finding a “Tree Star” animal, especially if given the chance to draw back the bow. Complements the Hunt / Hike I can personally attest to the excitement of each of these scenarios from a recent weekend hunt. My dad and I headed over to Eastern Washington for opening weekend of late season archery deer. The day before opening was filled with excitement for getting out of the house, the truck making it over the pass, and checking out an area new to us on public land. We spent opening morning tromping up steep hillsides and sliding in the mud, only to run into many other hunters. With only a day and a half left to hunt, we decided to drive another hour forward to a spot we knew from modern firearm season, you know, the kind of area that is vast open hillsides. Without coverage and trees, we knew our chances were minimal of finding an animal but still wanted to give it a shot. We left the truck and started our trek in around 1 pm. Within the first hour we walked up on a doe. The day continued to get better as we sat down for a glassing break and noticed a herd of deer 1,000 yards and a few drainages over. The part that got us really excited was spotting a legal buck that led his group up the hillside. It was a small opportunity to close the distance before nightfall, and we decided to leave these animals and hope they were nearby the next morning. We thought we had a successful day so far just by finding a legal animal. As we backed our way out, we found another herd of deer in the opposite direction, only 700 yards away on much more traversable terrain. There’s nothing like a stalk in cold Inside this issue: weather, as the sun starts to go down, hiking in crunchy snow to get your heart rate up and excitement overfilling. We started to close the distance on this group, and were about 100 yards away when Tournament 3 they made their way off into the setting sun and it became harder to see our pins. Back at the truck, I gave my dad a high-five. To me, I felt like I had been successful Community even though I never had a chance to let off a shot. Hunting is hard and exhausting, especially in conditions that you are not 100% Membership 12 prepared for mentally, physically or gear wise. But as hunters, we put in the work because Application at the end of the day, we get so much more out of a hunt than just filling our freezer.
