However, in the late 1970s and the early 1980s, a change occurred in the attitude of migrant authors. Instead of blending into Quebecois society and literature by adopting similar lifestyles and topics, they started retaining their cultural differences, and used their personal experience of displacement as material for their fictional literary work. During the 1990s particularly, the concept of transculture - based on topics associated with migration such as dislocation and hybridity - developed and began to challenge - within literary work at least - the existing cultural and geographical borders. In this thesis, we will explore the work of four selected groups of migrant authors - namely French, Middle Eastern, Haitian and Jewish authors - and highlight the topics specific to each group. Coming from very different backgrounds, their reasons for migrating and their expectations about Quebec vary greatly. The French show characters who feel out of place in France because they are unable to accept the changes within their own society. They idealise Quebec and see it mainly as a bastion of traditional French values, which is bound to lead them to disillusion. Middle Eastern authors, mainly female, present characters originally migrating to Quebec in hope of a better material life, but who also found an unexpected liberation. In Middle Eastern novels, women are the true beneficiaries of migration because they discover independence through feminist theories and the support of laws that guarantee personal freedom. As for Haitian writers, they focus mainly on the topic of memory and attempt to hold on to the past through literary creation. Their work also questions the process of becoming a migrant and dealing with Otherness in an adoptive culture. Contrary to Haitians, Jewish writers express a fragmented sense of identity due to gaps in their personal and collective memories, an overlap between their national and Jewish identities, and their migration to a new country. Despite their different origins, the four groups of authors have topics in common. Some novels depict the different steps to becoming a migrant and how individuals become disconnected from their cultures and lands of origin. Another part of migrant authors’ work shows the identity crisis that ensues from living in a foreign country and features some of the mechanisms that migrants adopt in order to cope with the new elements of their adoptive country and to retain their sense of cultural identity. Learning to compromise, they recreate a ‘home’ in their adoptive country, but they also reinvent the borders between cultures and countries by combining elements from both worlds. LPA 6 Introduction Migrant writing in Quebec is far from being a new phenomenon, as Quebec - and more generally Canada - is a country of immigration. The most famous example of it is probably Louis Hemon’s Maria Chap delaine, published in 1914, and contributing to the presentation of Quebec as a bastion of Francophone culture and values. The migrant contribution to national literature, however, has changed throughout the years. Clement Moisan and Renate Hildebrand, who have retraced the history of migrant writing since 1937 in Ces Etrangers du dedans,l show that its goals and aims have varied in conjunction with migratory flows. Up until the late 1950s, migrants were predominantly of European extraction. Their views about culture and society were fairly similar to those of the Quebecois, and therefore, the literature produced by those migrant authors was in harmony with that of francophone local authors. They praise the hard-working men, fighting a somewhat hostile nature, and the virtues of women who bring up children in the ancestral traditions and catholic faith of the early French settlers. But, from the 1960s, migrants from other parts of the world started to arrive in larger number in Quebec. Coming from Asia, Africa, the Middle East or even the Caribbean, this new wave of migrants did not share the same Eurocentric cultural background, and often was (or saw itself as) the victim of colonialism. If, in most cases, they were themselves Francophones, they had not migrated to Quebec with a view to perpetuate francophone values, but rather to break free from oppressive regimes and make a better material life for themselves.

    PROGRAMME LUC PLAMONDON Parolier Né à Saint-Raymond de Portneuf, Luc Plamondon est initié très jeune au monde de la musique. Sa tante Augustine lui apprendra le piano et lui fera jouer des rôles dans des opérettes. ll commence secrètement à écrire des chansons et des pièces de théâtre à son adolescence. Dix ans plus tard, après de longues études à Québec, Montréal, Paris, Londres, Berlin, Rome et à Grenades, il se retrouve aux États-Unis. Suivra une année d’errance. À New York, il se gave de comédies musicales, puis, à San Francisco, il tombe sous le choc de Hair, le premier rock musical, l’étincelle qui l’amènera dix ans plus tard à écrire Starmania, dont la création à Paris sera dirigée par... Tom O’Horgan, le célèbre metteur en scène original de Hair. C’est en revenant à Montréal qu’il écrit sa première chanson Dans ma Camaro, qui sera le hit de l'été 70. C’est en Diane Dufresne cependant qu’il trouvera son interprète fétiche, pour qui il écrira 75 chansons. Considéré comme le premier parolier rock de la langue française, il est appelé dans les années 70 - 80 à travailler, entre autres, avec Julien Clerc, Robert Charlebois, Françoise Hardy, Johnny Hallyday et Ginette Reno. En 1978, l’opéra rock Starmania (musique de Michel Berger) sort sur disque avec Diane Dufresne, France Gall, Fabienne Thibeault, Nanette Workman, Daniel Balavoine et Claude Dubois. Le spectacle est créé sur scène en 1979 au Palais des Congrès de Paris. Le succès immédiat et toujours grandissant des chansons de Starmania a donné lieu à de multiples productions dans différents pays au cours des quatre dernières décennies qui totalisent plus de 6 millions de spectateurs et autant d’albums.

    International Journal of CO-OPERATIVE ACCOUNTING AND MANAGEMENT, 2020 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 DOI: 10.36830/IJCAM.202014 Locating the Contributions of the African Diaspora in the Canadian Co-operative Sector Caroline Shenaz Hossein, Associate Professor of Business & Society, York University, Canada Abstract: Despite Canada’s legacy of co-operativism, Eurocentrism dominates thinking in the Canadian co- op movement. This has resulted in the exclusion of racialized Canadians. Building on Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s (2014) exposure of the historical fact of African Americans’ alienation from their own cooperativism as well as the mainstream coop movement, I argue that Canadian co-operative studies are limited in their scope and fail to include the contributions of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC). I also argue that the discourses of the Anglo and Francophone experiences dominate the literature, with mainly white people narrating the Indigenous experience. Finally, I hold that the definition of co-operatives that we use in Canada should include informal as well as formal co-operatives. Guyanese economist C.Y. Thomas’ (1974) work has influenced how Canadians engage in co-operative community economies. However, the preoccupation with formally registered co-operatives excludes many BIPOC Canadians. By only recounting stories about how Black people have failed to make co-operatives “successful” financially, the Canadian Movement has missed many stories of informal co-operatives that have been effective in what they set out to do. Expanding what we mean by co-operatives for the Canadian context will better capture the impact of co-operatives among BIPOC Canadians. Bref … tout pour être heureuse, à un détail près : avant les quarante coups de son horloge biologique, elle est obsédée par son désir d'enfant. Mais pas n'importe comment ni avec n'importe qui. Elle va alors proposer à François, avec qui elle partage quasiment son appartement, d'être le géniteur. Seulement voilà …François est plutôt attiré par les garçons… Heureusement (?), Danou, la mère d’Elisabeth, antiquaire, excentrique qui préfère les antiquités dans sa boutique plutôt que dans son lit, s’est mise en tête de lui présenter l’homme idéal…ou presque. A partir de ce thème, cette comédie douce-amère décortique la complexité des relations amoureuses d'aujourd'hui. Pourquoi j’ai écrit cette pièce ? Sans doute parce que les auteurs sont un peu des voleurs de vie ! Et que l’histoire d’une jeune femme active et épanouie en apparence, mais rongée par un désir viscéral de maternité, est un sujet on ne peut plus actuel. Élisabeth veut avoir un enfant avant quarante ans, mais sans faire un bébé toute seule, et encore moins avec n’importe qui. Autour de ce thème, j’ai voulu traiter des relations entre les hommes et les femmes d’aujourd’hui, relations qui ne sont plus tout à fait ce qu’elles étaient il y a seulement une quinzaine d’années.

Les admirateurs ont ce culot envahissant de se raconter à ceux dont les chansons ont illuminé leur vie. En te voyant pour la première fois, je t’ai dit sans pudeur que ma mère chantait tes chansons dans la voiture en m’emme- nant à l’école, que, attaché sur le siège arrière droit, je la regardais chanter la serveuse automate et ses envies d’une autre vie. 9 MONSTARMANIA Quand ma mère chantait tes chansons Fabienne, elle prenait le large, elle m’échappait. Et moi, je regardais son joli profil et sa voix juste qui collait à la tienne. Alors, elle accélérait au volant de sa R17. Et quand on arrivait à l’école, le monde était stone et ses habitants avaient dormi « Les Uns avec les autres ». J’avais neuf ou dix ans.

Drawing on oral history transcripts, as well as textual and visual documents, From the Mill to the Hill explores how complicated and contested relations of race, class, gender, and sexuality intertwined to constitute a French-Canadian identity and community in Maillardville prior to the Second World War. Using critical discourse analysis as methodology, this study examines the narratives of 23 men and women who were interviewed in the early 1970s and lived in Maillardville in the period preceding that war. Newspaper articles, city council minutes, company records, church records, as well as historical photographs culled from various archives and a local museum, also serve as primary documents. From the Mill to the Hill argues that a French-Canadian identity and community was constructed in Maillardville between 1909 and 1939 through the racialization of bodies and spaces. Narratives about the myth of the frontier, the opposite "other," and the racialization of the space in and around the company town of Fraser Mills illustrate how identity construction operated within a gendered and racialized framework. Secondly, this study excavates the fragile "whiteness" of French Canadians as both colonizers and colonized in British Columbia.

    Serge Lama, Un día, una vida. Con el título “Un jour, une vie”, Serge Lama presentó su último trabajo cantado en directo el 11 de febrero de 2003, justo el día que cumplía 60 años de edad. Se trata de uno de los mejores cantantes de Francia. Hizo un recital para sus admiradores en el Palais Omnisport de París Bercy. Los eurovisivos conocemos a Serge Lama por su intervención en el Festival de Eurovisión de 1971 en Dublín donde quedó décimo con el tema “Un jardin sur la terre” representando a Francia. Pero eso sólo fue una anécdota para una gran figura, que el Festival ni le quitó ni le dio. Un personaje duro, que nos recuerda a Napoleón, pero también a nuestro Nino Bravo. Quizá el cantante valenciano desaparecido en abril de 1973 hubiera tenido una carrera similar a la de Serge. Físicamente se parecen y en portento de voz también. Además serían casi de la misma edad. Serge Lama, de nombre real Serge Chauvier, nació en Burdeos el 11 de febrero de 1943, en plena Guerra Mundial. Su padre era barítono, Georges Chauvier, y de él heredó la vena artística y una magnífica voz. Era hijo único. La familia emigró a París en 1950. Vivían humildemente ya que su padre era un artista modesto que no tuvo el éxito merecido. Pero Serge, desde pequeño vivió el mundo de la farándula y quedó prendado de él, de esos teatros parisienes tan románticos. Inspiración que consagró su carrera. Con los años se haría un auténtico cantautor romántico de baladas llenas de sentimiento.
