October 13, 2015 for Immediate Release Cass Mccombs to Release a Folk October 13, 2015 For Immediate Release Cass McCombs To Release A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Out December 11th on Domino Records Listen to “Evangeline” – http://smarturl.it/EvangelineSC December 11th marks the release of A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., an alternate retelling of the last decade in the life of extraordinary songwriter Cass McCombs. Comprising songs from 2003-2014, the album showcases McCombs’ thematic and emotional diversity. A black mirror to his catalog, there are varying moments of reflection, madness, and dark humor. Also of politics - “Bradley Manning,” which debuted on Democracy Now, is a modern folk ballad of the convicted Army whistleblower, and directly quotes Manning’s own Facebook posts. McCombs has a unique ability to stitch together ancient techniques with our current primitive mind. For all their differences, this collection of songs reveals the artist as navigator of avoidance. They have been unearthed from the so-called underground - culled from the various limited, rare sources from which they were initially released on different independent labels on both sides of the pond, now compiled by Domino. For the past decade, most of these have been next to impossible to find, and for the first time are now readily available. Many were first unveiled as split 7”s, only sold at shows, whose artist pairings are as diverse as McCombs’ own musical tendencies: e.g. Meat Puppets (“Evangeline,” “Night of the World”), Michael Hurley (“Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log”) and White Magic (“If You Loved Me Before”). McCombs is a perennial favorite of many acclaimed musicians - as evidenced by the broad range of guests who appear on the tracks: Mike Gordon (Phish) co-wrote and lent his unmistakable vocal to the bizarre experiment, “Texas”; PREfection-era drummer, Tim Dewit aka Dutch E. Germ (Gang Gang Dance) on “A.Y.D.”; drummer Joe Russo (Furthur) on “Evangeline” and “Night Of The World”; Chris Cohen (Deerhoof) plays guitar on “Poet’s Day” and “An Other”; Tim Cedar (from noise/punk band Ligament) drums on “Twins”; among many other anti-heroes from the musical underground, proving community defies classification. Parallel universes obviously exist, but where are they before we experience them? The occult world stalks us until the final coup-de-gras. But McCombs is not a mystic but a brutal realist, exposing himself warts and all, in the punk tradition. These songs will both satiate and perplex those already familiar with McCombs, while compelling and rewarding new listeners, pointing a way towards his back catalog. It’s a glimpse behind the studio curtain at one of the greatest songwriters of the 21st Century. True trash esoterica. A Folk Set Apart includes 19 songs (19 on CD, 11 on LP + 8 digital bonus tracks) all remastered for this release. Five of these songs are previously unreleased. The LP is a single vinyl in a gatefold jacket, which includes a printed inner sleeve and an MP3 download card. McCombs will be playing a string of US dates in the coming weeks. October sees him open for Kurt Vile on the West Coast, and November he’ll be opening for My Morning Jacket on one night of their four-night run at New York’s famed Beacon Theatre. Details below. • Dec1 Untitled REF GUIDE FINAL[2]
UNTITLED RESOURCE GUIDE SUGGESTIONS FOR ENGAGEMENT ABOUT UNTITLED Beginning with a reflection on the early AIDS epidemic, Untitled eschews a linear narrative to introduce a fractious timeline, moving from the sublime to the tragic and back again. By juxtaposing mainstream network news, activist footage, artists' work, and popular entertainment from the last turbulent decades, Untitled references regimes of power that precipitated a generation of AIDS and queer activism and continues today with international struggle and expression. In 2010, artist Jim Hodges was invited to give a lecture on the billboard project of Félix González-Torres at San Antonioʼs Artpace. He teamed up with fellow filmmakers Carlos Marques da Cruz and Encke King to create Untitled. Neither a portrait or a documentary about González- Torres, the film was an attempt to place the viewer “in his room,” that is to say, the filmmakers worked to create, for the viewer, an understanding of the influences and contexts within which González- UNTITLED Torres was working. In Hodges's words, “In this way, the framing of the artist can become a way to project any number of people, endlessly.” A Film by Untitled can therefore be considered to be as much about González- Jim Hodges, Carlos Marques da Cruz, and Encke King Torres and the AIDS crisis as it can be seen as grappling with the continuum of global dehumanization. PURPOSE OF THIS RESOURCE GUIDE In an effort to honor the sense of endlessness that Untitled suggests, this guide is a resource for provoking both public and private conversation. We have provided you with: • WORDS for engagement regarding HIV/AIDS, art, and culture • THOUGHTS to provoke dialogue • HIV/AIDS TIMELINE • INFORMATION about prevention and wellness • LINKS to extend the conversation CREDITS • Like the film, this Resource Guide hopes to raise more questions than it answers.

Tags: Music, Film, Inspiration, Process, Identity, Production, Multi-tasking. On being thoughtful about each decision you make Musician and composer Owen Pallett on maintaining a punk ethos in the world of chamber music, their fool-proof lyric writing method, revisiting old work, and negative inspiration. This is your first solo album in six years, but you’ve been busy in that time with different scores and arranging for other musicians. Did these projects take any creative or financial pressure off you when it came to making this record? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t really. Film scores are always kind of a bit of a crapshoot. If you score a film and it becomes a bit of a hit, then you do get residuals off it, so it is a good investment if you pick the right films. I notoriously have a bit of a bad nose for a good script. Back in 2008 or 2007, Gus Van Sant was asking me to possibly score Milk prior to studio involvement, and I remember reading the script and thinking it was bullshit. It won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and I was like “Oh wow, I don’t really have a good nose for that kind of stuff.” Most of the production work and arrangement work that I do is a little more labor of love.

FILTER 46: Bone Poem: A Short Story By Cass McCombs and Albert Herter By Cass McCombs and Albert Herter on December 5, 2011 Illustrations by Albert Herter Carmine itched his temple in the direction of the anxiety-producing event, a man in spandex stretching his crotch in a beam of sunlight. A dog howled, the honk of a horn. He who tamed the insects. Carmine was waiting for the main capital woman, who said she’d be wearing pearl glasses on a chain. He crossed his legs to produce a pain in his hip, which usually grounded him for 10 minutes. The trees were a mixture of margarita, neon lime and paradise green. Bullies on bicycles, dolls pushing strollers of dolls pushing strollers of...suddenly, the puncture of high heels. Scenery bushes rattling fever again. She was his scenery, no, programmer. Feeding him new formulas, after the expiration date, sucked dry. Algorithms get juiced, around the block, worn out, like book hookers. She sat on the bench next to him, an envelope tickling his eye. She made her fingers dance up his arm like a spider, which, upon reaching his shoulder, slowly rested one black-tipped foot on his antitragus. He unfolded his legs. She lowered her glasses to reveal two cold black caves emanating vapors. Ten minutes later, Carmine and the main capital woman were driving downtown in his pickup truck to score. She was a friend of a friend, Carmine assumed she’d take a cut in one way or another, a cut from a source Carmine assumed was already cut with lactose or spillover from a fictional price tag, or both.

  • Rose Colored Blues”
ANDREW COMBS TO RELEASE CANYONS OF MY MIND APRIL 7 GARDEN & GUN PREMIERES NEW TRACK “ROSE COLORED BLUES” U.S. EAST COAST TOUR STARTS MARCH 30, EUROPEAN TOUR TO FOLLOW “One of Nashville’s most poetically gifted young singer-songwriters.” NPR Music Andrew Combs is set to release his anticipated New West Records debut, Canyons Of My Mind, on April 7, 2017. Garden & Gun premiered album track “Rose Colored Blues” yesterday, which can be heard now Here, calling it “a freewheeling number that reframes the constant motion of touring—a common musician’s lament—in a positive light.” Combs adds, “It’s a romanticized version of being on the road. I wanted it to be lush, and to feel like you’re driving. The concept is something that’s always been very interesting to me: the whole idea of someone relishing their blues.” Combs will soon return to the road for a U.S. East Coast tour that begins next Thursday, March 30, before embarking on an extensive European tour throughout May. Please see below for full tour details with more dates to be announced soon. Inspired by the darker side of touring, the album single “Blood Hunters” previously premiered at Rolling Stone Country alongside a Ry Cox directed cinematic film, which can now be viewed/shared Here. The suspense-filled video tells the story of a hunter and his prey with nods to sci-fi and horror. Combs explains, “This one is about losing your mind. It came out in a haze of post tour blues; this being the 24-72 hours after you get home from tour in which you find yourself restless and somewhat deranged.

Now their 6-year romantic relationship is put to the test when Dan receives an attractive job offer from the record label with whom he interns, and he must choose between a move forward and a future with Mel. Growth and temptation happen – but will their relationship remain part of their future? Writer/director Hannah Fidell explores the struggles of young love as it begins to face the next steps into adulthood. Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield give warm, genuine performances as Mel and Dan, alongside Lindsay Burdge (star of Fidell’s A TEACHER) as a colleague of Dan’s who entices him in more ways than one. HANNAH FIDELL DISCUSSES 6 YEARS I wrote 6 Years focusing on the relationship of two young adults. Who hasn’t had a first love? And who hasn’t gone through a breakup with said first love? (for those of you who are married to that first person...please ignore…) More than anything though, I modeled Dan and Mel’s world on my group of friends in college. Although, the fighting and the physical violence, that was pure fiction. The script was in great hands with Taissa and Ben.
