Hrastar August 1967 Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, Maryland A COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AN ADVANCED OAO John A. Hrastar SUMMARY The purpose of the study covered by this report was to determine the feasibility of using an on-board digital computer and strap-down inertial reference unit for attitude control of an advanced OAO space- craft. An integrated, three axis control law was assumed which had been previously proven stable in the large. The principal advantage of this type of control system is the ability to complete three axis reori- entations over large angles. This system, although apparently complex, has the effect of simplifying the overall system. This is because a re- orientation is a simple extension of a hold or point operation, i.e., mode switching may be simplified. The study indicates that a system of this type is feasible and offers many advantages over present systems. The time for a reorientation using this type of control is considerably shorter than the time required using more conventional methods. The computer and inertial reference unit usedinthe study had the characteristics of systems presently under development. Feasibility, therefore is within the present state of the art, requiring only continued development of these systems.

Direct measurements of fundamental parameters and photospheric structures of post-main-sequence intermediate-mass stars are required for a deeper understanding of their evolution. Aims. Based on near-IR long-baseline interferometry we aim to resolve the stellar surface of the F0 supergiant star Canopus, and to precisely measure its angular diameter and related physical parameters. Methods. We used the AMBER/VLTI instrument to record interferometric data on Canopus: visibilities and closure phases in the H and K bands with a spectral resolution of 35. The available baselines (60−110 m) and the high quality of the AMBER/VLTI observations allowed us to measure fringe visibilities as far as in the third visibility lobe. Results. We determined an angular diameter of / = 6.93 ± 0.15 mas by adopting a linearly limb-darkened disk model. From this angular diameter and Hipparcos distance we derived a stellar radius R = 71.4 ± 4.0 R. Depending on bolometric fluxes existing in the literature, the measured / provides two estimates of the effective temperature: Teff = 7284 ± 107 K and Teff = 7582 ± 252 K.

This is a modern constellation in the northern sky created by Petrus Plancius in 1612. Rosette Nebula is an open cluster plus the surrounding emission nebula. The open cluster is actually denoted NGC 2244, while the surrounding nebulosity was discovered piecemeal by several astronomers and given multiple NGC numbers. This is an area where a cluster of young stars about 3 million years old have blown a hole in the gas and dust where they were born. Hard ultraviolet light from these young stars have excited the gases in the surrounding nebulosity, giving the red wreath-like appearance in photographs. NGC 2244 is in the center of this roughly round nebula. This cluster has a visual magnitude of 4.8 and a distance of about 4900 light years. It was discovered by William Herschel on January 24, 1784. NGC 2244 is about 24’ across and contains about 100 stars.

Frew Department of Physics & Astronomy, Macquarie University, NSW, 2109, Australia [email protected] Abstract We present evidence that the Boorong Aboriginal people of northwestern Victoria observed the Great Eruption of Eta (η) Carinae in the nineteenth century and incorporated the event into their oral traditions. We identify this star, as well as others not specifically identified by name, using descriptive material presented in the 1858 paper by William Edward Stanbridge in conjunction with early southern star catalogues. This identification of a transient astronomical event supports the assertion that Aboriginal oral traditions are dynamic and evolving, and not static. This is the only definitive indigenous record of η Carinae’s outburst identified in the literature to date. Here, by modeling lightcurves of three binary-lens microlensing events observed by PLANET, I illustrate specific applications of binary-lens microlensing to real astrophysical problems. The lightcurve of a prototypical caustics-crossing binary-lens microlensing event OGLE-1999-BUL-23, which has been especially densely covered by PLANET during its second caustic crossing, enables me to measure the linear limb-darkening coefficients of the source star in I and V bands. The results are more or less consistent with theoretical predictions based on stellar atmosphere models, although the nonlinearity of the actual stellar surface brightness profile may have complicated the interpretation, especially for I band. Next, I find that the model for the lightcurve of EROS BLG-2000-5, another caustics-crossing binary-lens microlensing event, but exhibiting an unusually long second caustic crossing as well as a very prominent third peak due to a close ii approach to a cusp, requires incorporation of the microlens parallax and the binary orbital motion.
