Urchfont and Bishop Cannings Hello, my name is Lisa Kinnaird and I am your Liberal Democrat candidate for Urchfont and Bishops Cannings. I am writing to ask for your support in the May 2021 local elections. I want to be selected so that I can help build strong relationships within our communities to provide the services and solutions which will enable us all to live in a healthy and sustainable environment. In particular, to tackle transport poverty and rural isolation, I’d like to take a lead in delivering safe cycle routes to link our villages to our towns in Wiltshire; enabling independent travel for all ages without buses or cars. A Bit About Me… We moved to Urchfont 20 years ago as an Army family, my husband David worked in the Royal Signals and I worked as a Secondary School Teacher at Wootton Bassett and later as a school travel planner at Wiltshire Council. We raised 3 children here in Urchfont, and sent them all to the local state schools and pre-school. I have been an active member of both Devizes Liberal Democrats and the Urchfont community. Rural village life offers lots of opportunities to get involved and work towards making your community an even better place to live. I threw myself into the Rights of Way group, our School and Pre-school Committees and set up and ran the “Youth of Urchfont”. My work with Wiltshire Council involved campaigning for safe and sustainable travel to and from schools and resulted in many new cycle paths and bike shelters being built in the Pewsey Vale. Currently I am on the Parish Council and heavily involved in helping tackle climate change by working with residents and landowners to plant more trees and hedges to support Wiltshire Council’s efforts to meet its Carbon Neutral 2030 targets. Last December, during the General Election, I worked as Campaign Manager for our prospective Parliamentary candidate Jo Waltham. Active campaigning for our communities is central to my approach and goes to the heart of what it means to be a Lib Dem. This campaigning zeal and way of working that engages local people has been invaluable during the Coronavirus Crisis. In Urchfont myself and two other Councillors set up a volunteer scheme called Connecting a Caring Community connecting 75 volunteers to help the vulnerable during the crisis. It is my belief that community politics and activism is above all about helping people.     Bishops Cannings Parish Newsletter October 2019 Bishops Cannings Parish Council Newsletter, October 2019 1 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR It is heartening to see that at last, the environment is a subject that is being taken seriously. The Parish Council has received a newsletter from Wiltshire Council Highways department stating that they are keen to hear from any local community about how they think they can help improve rural highway verges for the benefit of wildlife and wild flowers. As a rural Parish you would expect us to have a good range of wildflowers already, but sadly this is not the case. Intensive farming methods and the continuous building of new roads has led to the loss of extensive areas of potentially wildlife-rich land. Some of our road verges are full of cow parsley in May, but this is a tough plant that can withstand being cut down and then smothered with chopped clippings. Many of our other wildflowers are more delicate and have disappeared entirely because they cannot withstand this treatment. There are many of us who like the well-kept look and object to leaving any area to grow long because it can look scruffy once the flowers have died back in the late summer. There are also places where it is necessary to cut the verges regularly to allow motorists to see clearly around bends and at junctions. However, it would benefit both us and our wildlife if we could just adjust our mindset and allow some places to ‘go wild’. This does not mean completely abandoning an area, but cutting it just once or twice a year and removing the clippings each time.

    Bishops Cannings Parish Newsletter March 2020 Bishops Cannings Parish Council Newsletter, March 2020 1 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR As I write this, we have just finished the second of our Neighbourhood Plan consultations. There was a fair turnout, so thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend. Every comment that was written down by residents will be transferred into a document that will be used to produce our strategic priorities or, in simpler words, a list of aims for the future benefit of the Parish. We already have some idea of what is lacking in our area, but your feedback has identified more. A wish for better access to footpaths in open countryside and to the sports facilities on Hopton Industrial Estate was a particular request from those of you living at Corn Croft and Lay Wood. By the time of the next newsletter, the Parish Council will have discussed the results and we will give a more detailed update then. Some months ago, the Parish Council had discussions with Wiltshire Council regarding the poor condition of the numerous play areas in their care. As explained previously, Wiltshire Council no longer undertakes repairs to play equipment; it is either removed or left with a barrier around it to prevent use. We were able to secure some funding from Wiltshire in return for an undertaking to take on responsibility for upkeep. A list of urgent repairs has been produced by the Parish Council and costed by the play area contractor. The work has been agreed and will take place at Richmond Close, Hopgood Close, Waterside Park, Cygnet Close, Anzio Road, Hillier Road and Le Marchant.
