Laura Malinen 2017 DRAWING COSTUMES, PORTRAYING CHARACTERS Costume sketches and costume concept art in the filmmaking process MA thesis Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture Department of Film, Television and Scenography Master’s Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television Major in Costume Design 30 credits Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisors Sofia Pantouvaki and Satu Kyösola for the invaluable help I got for this thesis. I would also like to thank Nick Keller, Anna Vilppunen and Merja Väisänen, for sharing their professional expertise with me. Author Laura Malinen Title of thesis Drawing Costumes, Portraying Characters – Costume sketches and costume concept art in the filmmaking process Department Department of Film, Television and Scenography Degree programme Master’s Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television. Major in Costume Design Year 2017 Number of pages 85 Language English Abstract This thesis investigates the various types of drawing used in the process of costume design for film, focusing on costume sketches and costume concept art. The research question for this thesis is ‘how and why are costume sketches and costume concept art used when designing costumes for film?’ The terms ‘costume concept art’ and ‘costume sketch’ have largely been used interchangeably. My hypothesis is that even though costume sketch and costume concept art have similarities in the ways of usage and meaning, they are, in fact, two separate, albeit interlinked and complementary terms as well as two separate types of professional expertise. The focus of this thesis is on large-scale film productions, since they provide the most valuable information regarding costume sketches and costume concept art.

  • Pescucci: Vi Svelo La Mia Filosofia Il Premio Oscar Ripercorre La Sua Carriera E Le Passioni Nascoste Di Valentina Grazzini

  • 1 from Acclaimed Director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) Comes The
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues. The film’s intrigue, scale, scope, adventurer and vivid characters provide a unique theatrical event. The Exodus from Egypt is the original and definitive heroic saga. It's also a powerful and personal story rich with emotion, rivalry and betrayal and an undying quest for freedom. Notes Scott: “Moses’ life is one of the greatest adventures and spiritual quests of all time.” From its opening battle where 15,000 Egyptian soldiers attack a Hittite encampment, to the towering structures, a terrifying series of plagues, and the parting of the Red Sea, Scott brings his signature vision to one of our most cherished and important stories. “I love anything larger-than-life,” he continues. “I knew what to do with Gladiator – how to make it really breathe, live and feel like people did in that era. With EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, I wanted to similarly bring to life the Egyptian culture and the Exodus in a way never before possible.” EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS was shot in Pinewood Studios, London and on location in Almeria, Southern Spain and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands.

  • Transcript of Fixing the Hobo Suit
1 You’re listening to Imaginary Worlds, a show about how we create them and why we suspend our disbelief, I’m Eric Molinsky. CLIP: DARK KNIGHT RISES In The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy played the villain Bane. And for some reason, he did the voice as a cross between Sean Connery and Darth Vader. Given that the character is supposed to come from a fictional Latin American country, it was such a weird choice – it was actually kind of fascinating, and lead to all these great parodies. CLIP: SOUTH PARK But for all the buzz around the voice, I was surprised that no one talked about Bane’s costume – which I thought was ingenious. In the comics, Bane’s costume looks like a Mexican wrestler. He’s got a back hood over his face, with a white design that looks like a skull with red eyes. Bane’s strength comes from tubes going into his back that pumps him up with liquid steroids. In fact, his shoulders are so bulked out -- the artists like to draw his head below his neck. There’s no way you could do a literal version of that without looking ridiculous. But that didn’t stop Joel Schumacher in his 1997 catastrophe Batman and Robin. CLIP: BANE! Christopher Nolan’s Batman took place a semi-realistic universe. So he and the costume designer Lindy Hemming turned Bane’s liquid steroids into a gas that he inhales, which doesn’t make him super strong, it dulls any physical pain. His breathing apparatus is the same shape as the design of the skull on his hood, but it’s black instead of white.

  • Herever Possible
Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises” is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again playsDEADLINE.com the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. “The Dark Knight Rises” also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. The screenplay is written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are 1 Benjamin Melniker, Michael E.
