Copies are available in Shrewsbury library at £2.50 and other outlets. Published by Shropshire Council. 3 SHROPSHIRE WAY FESTIVAL OF WALKS AND CELEBRATION – Audrey Menhinick We had a great response to our request for walks from walking groups across Shropshire resulting in a programme of 26 walks from 23 groups. Despite the changeable weather over 300 people were walking part of the Shropshire Way from 21st to 28th September. The final walk from the Kingsland Bridge was led by Sue Turner and we had the pleasure of welcoming Kate Ashbrook our National Ramblers Chairman. It was a mostly fine morning for 40 walkers with a preview on Shropshire Radio. Kate Ashbrook Clare Featherstone, John Gillham and Audrey Menhinick Afterwards sixty people came to the Celebration with bubbly and a cream tea at theTrinity Centre. Kate Ashbrook spoke about the history of the Shropshire Way and John Gillham introduced his Guidebook and video. The book “Walking the Shropshire Way – Official Guide” from Cicerone Publications will be released around 15th November but you can pre-order at a reduced price of £13.45 from https://shropshireway.org.uk/ and this way the Association will benefit from your purchase. The Importance of Walking Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at £3000 per month. 4 Group Away Week May 18th – 22nd 2020 Abergavenny It has been agreed that next year’s Away Week will take place during the week of May 18th – 22nd and will be based in Abergavenny. The website describes it thus: ’an ideal base for exploring the Brecon Beacons, Abergavenny has much to offer tourists - a blend of old and new, with activities and things to do to suit young and old alike. A visit to Abergavenny can really feel like a break away from it all - you can almost feel time slowing down as you unwind and take in the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery of the Usk valley’. We hope to be able to plan a programme with a choice of walks/activities each day as in recent years, if sufficient leaders come forward. Details and a Booking Form for next year’s Away Week can be obtained from: Peter Greeve 1 High Ridge Way Shrewsbury SY3 6DJ by sending a stamped addressed envelope (no telephone calls please). Alternatively details/form can be requested by sending an email to [email protected]. Forms will need to be downloaded and returned to the above address rather than being completed online and returned by email. Payment of the £10 contribution can be made either by cheque payable to ‘Ramblers Association SS6’ or by Bank Transfer (See p7) WOOD’S BREWERY OFFER During the preparations for the Shropshire Way Festival in September, the SWA negotiated a deal for some promotional beermats with Wood’s Brewery. The idea being to monitor the condition of the footpath and report any issues which may arise e.g. obstructions, broken stiles, flooded sections etc. This will be an informal voluntary role which doesn’t require attendance at meetings. Monitoring need only be conducted two or three times a year, but could be extended to a network of footpaths in the local vicinity if time permits. Please contact Neil via email if you are interested: [email protected]. 6 Paying for Special Events by Bank Transfer Up to now paying for Shrewsbury Ramblers special events, such as coach trips, holidays and socials, has been by cheque or cash. Following a limited trial over the last 2 months we are now offering the option for you to pay for these events by bank transfer (BACS). Snowdonia was designated a National Park because of its natural beauty. The Park Authority is responsible for safeguarding and promoting enjoyment and understanding of the Park‟s special qualities. Today, the Park is under increasing pressure. Every year, because of its renown, millions of people come to enjoy Snowdonia‟s coast, hills, rivers, lakes, wildlife and its special cultural heritage. Remember, when you come to Snowdonia, support the local businesses, recycle your waste, and use public transport whenever possible. In this issue of Snowdonia we provide information on how to enjoy Snowdonia healthily and safely. We provide information about a circular walk in the Bala and Ardudwy areas, and an accessible path in Betws y Coed. You will also be given a snapshot of the Ffestiniog area, and read about the history and heritage of Blaenau Ffestiniog. In this issue we have information on how to care for wildlife, and become more familiar with Snowdonia by attending a course at Plas Tan y Bwlch.

It was lightly revised by Richard Hoyle in the summer and autumn of 2020. The text on twentieth-century boundary changes is his work. The final stages of preparing this version of the text for web publication coincided with the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020. It was not possible to access libraries and archives to resolve a small number of outstanding queries. The Liberties and Municipal Boundaries The Domesday ‘city’ (civitas) of Shrewsbury included nine hides identifiable as the townships of its original liberty. To the south of the Severn they included Sutton, Meole Brace, Shelton, and Monkmeole (Crowmeole), and to the north Hencott.1 The location of a further half-hide, belonging to St Juliana’s church, was described by Eyton as ‘doubtful’,2 but may refer to the detached portions of St Juliana’s in Shelton.3 More obscure, as leaving no later parochial trace, was a virgate in Meole Brace which belonged to St Mary’s church.4 The Domesday liberties, however, were not settled.

Background Paper 13: Community Infrastructure 13 February Gwynedd & Môn Joint Local Development Plan 2015 [Type text] Topic Paper 13: Infrastructure Background This is one of a range of topic papers prepared to offer more detailed information and explain the approach of the Plan to different topics and issues affecting the Joint Local Development Plan Area. This paper will look specifically at community infrastructure. It will explain the background which will help to identify the issues, objectives and options for the Deposit Plan. The Deposit Plan is the second statutory stage in the preparation of the Joint Local Development Plan (JLDP). The JLDP shapes the future growth of communities in the Joint Local Development Plan Area and will set out the policies and land allocations against which planning applications will be assessed. The Deposit Plan will be submitted to the Welsh Government, which will appoint an independent inspector to assess the soundness of the Plan in the Examination in Public. If the inspector considers the Plan to be sound it will be recommended for adoption. When adopted the JLDP will supersede the Gwynedd Unitary Development Plan (2009) for the Gwynedd Local Planning Authority Area and the Gwynedd Structure Plan (1993) and Ynys Môn Local Plan (1996) for the Ynys Môn Local Planning Authority. This topic paper can be read in isolation or in conjunction with the other Topic Papers and Background Papers that have been prepared to give a full picture the Joint Local Development Plan Area. You may refer to the Topic Paper as a basis for making comments about the Deposit Plan.

If you’re fit, catch the Snowdon Sherpa bus to Pen-y-Pass and take the Pyg Track (p227). Time your descent via the Rhyd Ddu Path to catch the Welsh Highland Railway (p244) back to Caernarfon. If you’re not up for climbing, head to Llanberis and take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (p227). You’ll be up and down the mountain in 2½ hours, leaving plenty of time to check out the National Slate Museum (p230) and Dolbadarn Castle (p231) before stocking up on mead at Snowdon Honey Farm (p231). Head to Caer- narfon and watch the sunset over the Menai Strait from beside the city walls before dining at the Black Boy Inn (p235). DAY 2 // BE A PILGRIM Spend the morning exploring Caernarfon Castle (p233) before heading for the Llŷ n Peninsula.
