    Schools in Oswestry and the surrounding area Albert Road Board School Oswestry Erected in 1880 with a Master’s House. Changed its name to Public Elementary School, Albert Road, Oswestry c1905, all the staff remained the same, according to the Trade Directories. Headteachers Alexander Nelson (1880-1892) & (1895-1905>) Early Life and Education Alexander was born in Blackburn. Lancashire in 1845. The eldest son of William Nelson, a marble cutter, formerly boatman and his wife Jane nee Booth. He had a sister and a brother, Rebecca born 4th June 1848 and William b1850. The family moved from Blackburn to Manchester c1848 and on the 1851 Census they are living in 2 Faulkner St., Manchester, Lancashire, where the father is a marble cutter. Certified School Master Career On the 1871 Census Alexander is lodging with the Hughes family in Oswestry and gives his occupation as school teacher. In the Trade Directories and Parish Magazines he is shown as the Master in the British School for this year until at least 1877. By the 1881 Census he is the Headmaster at Albert Road Board School and is living in the School House, where he remains until 1892. On the 1901 Census he is living in 44 York St., Oswestry and describes himself as a Certified Schoolmaster. Trade Directories show him as the Headmaster of Albert Road Board School 1895-1900 and the Public Elementary School in 1905. On the 1911 Census he is living in 42 York St., Oswestry and is now retired. Personal Life On 28th October 1875 he married Jane Morgan in Oswestry.

Shrewsbury Castle: the inner bailey excavation in progress, July 2019. North to top. (Shropshire Council) Summary In May and July 2019 a two-phase archaeological investigation of the inner bailey of Shrewsbury Castle took place, supported by a grant from the Castle Studies Trust. A geophysical survey by Tiger Geo used resistivity and ground-penetrating radar to identify a hard surface under the north-west side of the inner bailey lawn and a number of features under the western rampart. A trench excavated across the lawn showed that the hard material was the flattened top of natural glacial deposits, the site having been levelled in the post-medieval period, possibly by Telford in the 1790s. The natural gravel was found to have been cut by a twelve-metre wide ditch around the base of the motte, together with pits and garden features. One pit was of late pre-Conquest date. 1 Introduction Shrewsbury Castle is situated on the isthmus, the neck, of the great loop of the river Severn containing the pre-Conquest borough of Shrewsbury, a situation akin to that of the castles at Durham and Bristol. It was in existence within three years of the Battle of Hastings and in 1069 withstood a siege mounted by local rebels against Norman rule under Edric ‘the Wild’ (Sylvaticus). It is one of the best-preserved Conquest-period shire-town earthwork castles in England, but is also one of the least well known, no excavation having previously taken place within the perimeter of the inner bailey.

Turner In attendance: Shropshire Councillor Claire Wild, 4 members of the public 076/1516 PUBLIC SESSION A member of the public spoke in relation to his complaint against the parish council. The Chairman invited other members of the public to speak; no-one wished to speak. 077/1516 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Received and accepted from Cllr. Amos. 078/1516 DISCLOSABLE PECUNIARY INTERESTS & DISPENSATION REQUESTS None declared. 079/1516 REPORTS Cllr. Wild explained that the SC Council Tax has risen by 1.99% with a further increase of 2% for Adult Social Care costs. She supported parishes taking on minor highways maintenance as it offers good value for money. Councillors expressed concern over the practicality of taking on road surfacing repairs. She urged parish councillors to attend events relating to The Big Conversation and to read the Shropshire Council Financial Strategy which went to Cabinet in January 2016. Submitted end June, still no response. Local BID consultation on Big Town Plan Campaigns/ Consultation finished on 29th. Sept. SFoE have submitted comments. Plan is in Projects/ Issues general very encouraging. BID and Shrewsbury Town Council will agree on topics for BP further discussion and will invite involvement by groups. Transport and air quality Mike reported that we’re waiting for a response from DEFRA to his email about “estimates based on estimates” Mike and Dave Green have a meeting with Steve Davenport (Portfolio holder for transport SC) on 10th Oct., to discuss air quality generally and air quality action plan. MR, DG This will include SC’s intention to buy micro-hybrid buses for Park & Ride, and Euro6 vehicles for SC. Also will raise the NWRR. John Whitelegg’s 20mph conference. Tony reported: excellent speakers, really knowledgeable and persuasive; Tony believes the statement put to conference for signing would have been agreed. All the town councils present said that they were considering advocating 20’s plenty.
