Scientific research at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Scientific research at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech - ULg 1 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech - University of Liege (GxABT-ULg) holds a privileged position at the crossing of research and development, which are at the heart of issues of international and societal interest, designating our institution as a leader in sustainable development. One of the GxABT-ULg priorities was to increase the quality and quantity of scientific research, with this priority being organised around three Research Units; namely, AGROBIOCHEM, BIOSE and TERRA, which also include support Centres for Research and Education (CARE) and different technical platforms. These structures have allowed the skills and expertise of GxABT-ULg to develop nationally and internationally in two major areas: «Living Resources and the Environment» and «Bioproducts and Consumers.» GxABT-ULg emphasises the multidisciplinary and integrative approaches within these research fields, particularly with respect to their close relationship with to sustainable development. La vallée de la Lesse à la fin du XIXème siècle : les photographies d'Edmond ... 1 La vallée de la Lesse à la fin du XIXème siècle : les photographies d'Edmond Rahir Christian Vandermotten 1 Les archives de la Société Royale belge de Géographie contiennent une collection de photographies de la vallée de la Meuse et de ses affluents, l'Ourthe (et l'Amblève) et la Lesse, que l'on peut attribuer à Edmond Rahir (quelques-unes sont marquées de son nom au verso, la plupart pas)1. 2 Edmond Rahir (1864-1936), membre de la Société de Géographie depuis 1906, était le frère de Maurice Rahir (1862-1935), lui-même membre depuis 1888, successeur en 1907 du premier secrétaire général Jean Du Fief et qui conserva cette fonction jusqu'à son décès. La notice consacrée à Edmond par Anne Cahen-Delhaye dans la Nouvelle Biographie nationale (tome V, 1999, pp. 293-295) fait la part belle à son activité d'archéologue, de fouilleur, de préhistorien et de conservateur de musée, mais néglige sa contribution au développement de l'excursionnisme et à la valorisation et à la conservation de la nature. -

The Action programme entails various means of reducing the risks of the pollution of water by nitrate: (a) struggle against nitrate losses in fields using a range of good agricultural practices, including certain restrictions on the use of fertilisers (quantities, time periods, soil conditions, etc.), (b) keeping a balance on each farm between the organic nitrogen produced and utilisation capacities on agricultural land, (c) adapting storehouses for livestock effluent to a capacity of 6 months and perfect watertightness, and (d) promoting transfers of livestock effluent between farms in excess and farms which still have a way of using it on their land. -

E-mail: [email protected] The Red Marble of Baelen from the Limbourg area (Vesdre Basin, Eastern Belgium) represents a member of the middle Famennian (late Upper Devonian) Souverain-Pré Formation (Late marginifera conodont Zone). It corresponds to a short-term transgressive event and eustatic rise during the Famennian, interrupting the regressive megasequence on the Condroz shelf in Belgium. It is the only known or at least the only well- documented mid-Famennian carbonate mud mound complex worldwide (Dreesen et al., 1985, 2013), after the end-Frasnian mass extinction that wiped out numerous invertebrate taxa. In contrast with the better-known Belgian red-stained Upper Frasnian mud mounds, the Famennian Baelen mud mounds are totally devoid of corals and stromatoporoids. Instead, crinoids, hexactinellid sponges and incertae sedis algae (Algospongia issinellaceans; Vachard & Cózar, 2010) have occupied here the ecological niche left behind. The macrofauna is clearly dominated by crinoids, which are generally represented by large fragments of stems and more rarely by calyxes, but also includes rare brachiopods (Athyridida, Productida and Spiriferida), bryozoans, and ? oncocerid cephalopods. -
