Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. This information is crucial for the conservation management of the butterfly fauna in Sri Lanka. Key words: conservation, crops, larval food plants (LFPs), pests, plant-butterfly combination. College, Barasat, Kolkata- 700124, West Bengal, India *Author for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT Epicalyx, staminal tube, stigma and trichome morphological characters have been used to characterize some common members of Malvaceae s.s. These characters have been analyzed following a recent molecular phylogenetic classification of Malvaceae s.s. Stigmatic character is effective for segregation of the tribe Gossypieae from other tribes. But precise distinction of other two studied tribes, viz. Hibisceae and Malveae on the basis of this character proved to be insufficient. Absence of epicalyx in Malachra has indicated an independent evolutionary event within Hibisceae. Distinct H-shaped trichome of Malvastrum has pointed out its isolated position within Malveae. Staminal tube morphological similarities of Abutilon and Sida have suggested their closeness. A key to the genera has been provided for identification purpose. Invasive Species Caesar weed • Scientific name: Urena lobata • Order name: Malvales • Family Name: Malvaceae • Native/Exotic/Invasive: Invasive • History: Caesar weed was first introduced to the United States because of its textile properties which was believed to be a cheaper and easier replacement of cotton; it was concluded that the plant was not as efficient compared to cotton because of the seed's long dormancy and impermeable seed coat (7). Caesar Weed is known for its rapid growth rate in disturbed areas which are becoming more common as human population increases and natural areas are being developed (7). Sword fern • Scientific Name: Polystichum munitum • Order name: Polypodiales • Family name: Dryopteridaceae • Native/Invasive/Exotic: Invasive • History: Sword fern is also known as “king of the northwest ferns” or “Christmas fern” and is an invasive species in Florida. Swords ferns were used medicinally to cure diarrhea or by rubbing the fronds on nettle stings to reduce the pain. This species has a wide tolerance to soil and moisture which makes it perfect for the Florida environment which ranges from sunny to flooding in a span of a few months (4). Air potato • Scientific name: Dioscorea bulbifera • Order name: Dioscoreales • Family name: Dioscoreaceae • native/exotic/invasive: Invasive • History: This species is an invasive which has caused a major disturbance to the vegetative community in Moccasin Lake Park; they are also NOT EDIBLE. Air potato can grow up to eight inches a day and grows potato like tubers which produces more air potato plants. This plant can quickly overtake an area, pushing out native species; some ways to get rid of it are to cut it down, burn it, or freeze the bulbs (sterilization). -

Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems. -

Sm. & W.E. Evans (Malvaceae s.l.), a tree endemic to China and Vietnam, is described in order to provide new characters for assessing its affinities relative to other malvalean genera. Craigia has very low-density wood, with abundant diffuse-in-aggre- gate axial parenchyma and tile cells of the Pterospermum type in the multiseriate rays. Although Craigia is distinct from Tilia by the pres- ence of tile cells, they share the feature of helically thickened vessels – supportive of the sister group status suggested for these two genera by other morphological characters and preliminary molecular data. Although Craigia is well represented in the fossil record based on fruits, we were unable to locate fossil woods corresponding in anatomy to that of the extant genus. INTRODUCTION The genus Craigia is endemic to eastern Asia today, with two species in southern China, one of which also extends into northern Vietnam and southeastern Tibet. The genus was initially placed in Sterculiaceae (Smith & Evans 1921; Hsue 1975), then Tiliaceae (Ren 1989; Ying et al. 1993), and more recently in the broadly circumscribed Malvaceae s.l. (including Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, and Bombacaceae) (Judd & Manchester 1997; Alverson et al. 1999; Kubitzki & Bayer 2003). Similarities in pollen morphology and staminodes (Judd & Manchester 1997), and chloroplast gene sequence data (Alverson et al. 1999) have suggested a sister relationship to Tilia. -

Cytological work on economically important plants of this family has received greater attention, though work has also been done on a few wild species by some workers like Youngman (1927), Davie (1933), Skovsted (1935, 1941), Bates (1967), Bates and Blanchard (1970), Hazra and Sharma (1971), Kachecheba (1972), Bhatt and Dasgupta (1976). However, detailed meiotic study has not been done on many genera and species of the family which is necessary to know the type of ploidy and the basic numbers of chromosomes from which the evolution might have progressed . The present investigation includes 15 species belonging to the tribe Hibisceae and Ureneae of the family Malvaceae. The species of the tribe Ureneae are simple polyploids of seven (Skovsted 1935) which has also been noticed in the present work. However, different chromosome numbers have been reported in the tribe Hibisceae. This vast range of chromosome numbers in the tribe especially necessiated the study of chromosome numbers and the ploidy level. This investigation also aimed at understanding the basic chromosome numbers from which the evolution is supposed to have progressed and the evaluation of systematic position of different taxa as understood at present. Accepted 30 June, 2011 Urena lobata is one of the medicinal plants used to treat diabetes in Nigeria. Its hypoglycaemic and anti- diabetic activities have been demonstrated. This study was designed to evaluate the long term effects of daily oral administration of aqueous extracts of U. lobata roots in normal rabbits. Parameters such as body weight, blood glucose and liver function tests were monitored at specific intervals in the serum for 24 weeks, and in the tissue. U. lobata significantly (P<0.05) reduced the body weight and fasting blood sugar of treated rabbits. Indicators of cholestasis, alkaline phosphatase and -glutamyl transferase, as well as serum direct bilirubin concentration, were initially significantly (P<0.05) increased, these parameters returned to the levels of control before the 10th week of monitoring and tissue enzymes were not depleted, suggesting that the initial toxic response was not sustained. Markers of hepatocyte injury; alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, were initially slightly elevated but subsequently returned to control levels. U. lobata root had no significant effects on serum total proteins, albumin and globulins. Regulation of dose and frequency of consumption of U. -

Accepted 28 January, 2010 The diversity of butterflies inhabiting the department of atomic energy campus at Kalpakkam was recorded through a modified line transect methodology by setting a permanent line transect of 300m and recoding all species of butterflies observed within a five meter distance around the observer. Five habitats within the campus viz., Garden, Scrub jungle, Riparian woods, Sandy area and Casuarina plantation (Monoculture) were evaluated for analysis of the association of the butterfly species with the habitat. A total of 1908 individuals representing 55 species were observed across the five habitat types. Out of these, members belonging to the family Nymphalidae was the most common with 20 species being recorded accounting for 36.3% of total species and 53.6% of total number of individuals collected. The maximum diversity and abundance was observed in the scrub jungle and garden area; these two habitats sharing 29 species among themselves. The species accumulation curve and rarefaction curves computed indicated the likelihood of encountering more number of species in the campus had inventory been more rigorous and extended. -

In Pakistan the family Malvaceae is represented by 6 sub-families viz., Byttnerioideae, Dombeyoideae, Malvoideae, Bombacoideae, Helicteroideae and Sterculioideae. The seed macro and micro morphological characters are examined, using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detailed seed morphological descriptions, micrographs and keys based on seed characters are also provided. A variety in various quantitative and qualitative seed characters was observed. The micro-morphological characters of seeds are quite significant to strengthen the taxonomic decisions within the family Malvaceae at various levels. The data obtained from the seed morphological characters were analyzed numerically to trace out the phylogenetic affinities for the taxa within the family Malvaceae from Pakistan. India *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] Received: 12.09.2018 | Revised: 9.10.2018 | Accepted: 16.10.2018 ABSTRACT The reniformis nematodes of the genus Rotylenchulus (Haplolaimidae: Nematoda) are sedentary semi-endoparasites of numerous crops. There are ten species out of which R. reniformis and R. parvus are important, and three species (R. amanictus, R. clavicadatus, R. leptus) are monophagous: two on monocots and one on Rosids. In general, Rotylenchulus species are capable of feeding from very primitive Magnoliids to plants of advanced category. Preference was distinctly observed towards the plants in Rosids (42.779%) followed by monocots (23.949%) and Asterids (21.755%). The SAI values were also higher for these groups of plants. The study on lineages further revealed intimate affinity to febids (25.594%), followed by commelinids (18.647%), malvids (16.088%), lamiids (11.883%), and campanulids (9.141%). Poales contribution within commelinids was 65.353%. Maximum affinity of Rotylenchulus species was observed by their association with plants from families Poaceae (7), followed by Fabaceae (6), Malvaceae (6), Asteraceae (4), Oleaceae (4), Soanaceae (4) and so on.
