5 Christ Church Alive With The Sound Of Music!

What an amazing evening on Saturday 2nd August and our sincere thanks to the Suzuki musicians, accompanists and all the teachers who worked so incredibly hard to produce it. The instruments sounded so perfectly pure as the programme of Bach, Handel and folk songs produced such a joyful sound as even more musicians than last year filled our Church . It is a remarkable method of learning and brings the musicians together from all over England and Europe, a truly international way of communicating and communicate they did, the happiest of sounds on a summer evening swelling to the rafters. Such musical talent all in one building. Grateful thanks also to the very generous audience who donated £260 for our roof fund. Angela Green

We watched the weather forecast with much optimism and we were fortunately rewarded! The storms did not affect our enjoyment , even if it wasn’t hot, on Saturday 9th August when we had, for the first time, a Community BBQ in the beautiful surroundings of Malvern St James Dome Gardens. All who came said Community Action having a lovely time Some of our congregation what a treat it had been and how much they enjoyed it and loved being able to enjoy the Malvern St James Dome Gardens. The children were able to play games and run off some excess energy and we were delighted that our friends from Community Action could be with us and enjoy food and a drink along with laughter and More Community Action enjoying the evening a chat with everyone. We appreciate the drivers who kindly brought them , I think they also enjoyed it! Many commented on how much they enjoyed the first class entertainment , provided by Malvern’s excellent “Lounge Toad” . We look forward to seeing them at more of our events as well as their usual afternoon teas in our Church Hall. Playing at the BBQ

ARCOS, registered as a charity in 1992 (Reg. Charity No: 1007416), exists to improve life for children and adults who have communication and/or swallowing problems, their families and others involved. Many clients have complex life-long disabilities. Our goal is to enable them to benefit from the latest advances in knowledge, understanding, skills and technology.

ARCOS provides information, advice, equipment loan, multi-disciplinary therapy for people of all ages, training for professionals and a unique service of training for carers including relatives. Bobath therapy, Facial Oral Tract Therapy (F.O.T.T.) based on Bobath principles and concordant treatment approaches are used to treat those with physical, sensory and perceptual impairments caused by neurological conditions for example: cerebral palsy, stroke, head injury, motor neurone disease.

10 SMILE (Sensation Movement Interaction in Life Experiences) is based at the ARCOS Therapy Centre in Malvern. SMILE provides a multi-sensory environment for calming relaxation and sensory stimulation. It is for the benefit of children with profound and multiple disabilities as well as those with learning and sensory impairment. All users have problems with sensory processing; some have visual and hearing impairment, global delay, cerebral palsy or hyper-mobility.

SMILE is a sensory room with a ‘difference’; not only does it offer state of the art technology (not currently available at any sensory room in Worcestershire) it also provides play activities such as cooking, creative story-telling and messy play. There is a music room where children enjoy listening games, singing songs and making music with percussion instruments. Favourite songs have proved to be those with regular rhythm and repeated lyrics that children can recognise. Action songs are popular and help promote communicative gesture and in some cases signing alongside voice and speech. (Please see photographs below).

Sensory Room Creative Story Telling

Music Therapy Messy Play

SMILE is a stay and play facility that encourages parents to play and learn alongside their children with the help and support of fully trained experienced staff. This approach to sensory, family learning helps to create a supportive atmosphere for all the family to enjoy.

The three main differences SMILE users experience are: Improved sensory experience: everything you see, hear smell or touch at SMILE is designed to encourage an active response and create a stimulating environment. Increased communication: SMILE helps develop understanding and use of communication in all its forms: attention, eye-pointing, vocalisation, gesture and speech. Increased confidence in social interaction: SMILE enables children to participate and engage at an appropriate level, fostering confidence in the children and their carers.
