  • Bob Ezrin – Primary Wave Music
    BOB EZRIN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ezrin The phrase “super-producer” is often used when discussing Bob Ezrin – and with good reason. After all, the Toronto native has been behind the boards of many classic albums, among them Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies, KISS’ Destroyer, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. He has also done much to help preserve music education in Canada in the face of devastating government funding cuts. Bob Ezrin was born March 25, 1949, into a musical Toronto family in which his mother played piano and his father, bass. Ezrin’s grandfather, a musical theatre amateur, taught him to dance to Al Jolson’s “Me and My Shadow” when Ezrin was just two. Ezrin went on to learn classical piano at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music and spent off-hours as a teen taking in the likes of Joni Mitchell at his uncle’s music club, The Penny Farthing in the mid-‘60s. At age 19 he was taken under the wing of The Guess Who producer Jack Richardson who sent him to fellow producer Phil Ramone’s Eastman School of Music “boot camp” in Rochester, New York. Upon his return, Richardson sent Ezrin to New York to check out shock rocker Alice Cooper, whose manager Shep Gordon was insistent Richardson produce them. Ezrin was blown away by Cooper’s performance at Max’s Kansas City and ended up co-producing the band’s 1971 album Love It to Death with the initially reluctant Richardson. Ezrin would go on to work with Cooper multiple times, including on his most recent record, 2011’s Welcome 2 My Nightmare.

Sundt touches on enlisting, boot camp at Great Lakes (Illinois), radio school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and joining the Pacific Fleet in March of 1945. He relates duty as a radio operator aboard the USS Argonne (AG-31), being in Ulithi Atoll during the Battle of Okinawa, being in a “Recreation Island Working Party” on Enewetak Atoll, and patrolling the Leyte Gulf area for remaining Japanese troops. After entering the active Naval Reserves, he touches on using the GI Bill to finish undergraduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a Master’s degree in education administration at the University of Colorado. Sundt mentions being recalled in 1947 to the Midshipman Training Squadron as the admiral’s tactical radio operator aboard the USS Wisconsin. He talks about his recall to active duty for the Korean War and receiving a direct commission to ensign.

    Navy and Coast Guard Ships Associated with Service in Vietnam and Exposure to Herbicide Agents Background This ships list is intended to provide VA regional offices with a resource for determining whether a particular US Navy or Coast Guard Veteran of the Vietnam era is eligible for the presumption of Agent Orange herbicide exposure based on operations of the Veteran’s ship. According to 38 CFR § 3.307(a)(6)(iii), eligibility for the presumption of Agent Orange exposure requires that a Veteran’s military service involved “duty or visitation in the Republic of Vietnam” between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. This includes service within the country of Vietnam itself or aboard a ship that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam. However, this does not include service aboard a large ocean- going ship that operated only on the offshore waters of Vietnam, unless evidence shows that a Veteran went ashore. Inland waterways include rivers, canals, estuaries, and deltas. They do not include open deep-water bays and harbors such as those at Da Nang Harbor, Qui Nhon Bay Harbor, Nha Trang Harbor, Cam Ranh Bay Harbor, Vung Tau Harbor, or Ganh Rai Bay. These are considered to be part of the offshore waters of Vietnam because of their deep-water anchorage capabilities and open access to the South China Sea. In order to promote consistent application of the term “inland waterways”, VA has determined that Ganh Rai Bay and Qui Nhon Bay Harbor are no longer considered to be inland waterways, but rather are considered open water bays.

    The Value of Connections: Evidence from the Italian-American Mafia ∗ Giovanni Mastrobuoni† September 2013‡ Abstract Using declassified Federal Bureau of Narcotics records on 800 US Mafia mem- bers active in the 1950s and 1960s, and on their connections within the Cosa Nostra network, I estimate network effects on gangsters’ economic status. Lacking informa- tion on criminal proceeds, I measure economic status exploiting detailed information about their place of residence. Housing values are reconstructed using current de- flated transactions recorded on Zillow.com. I deal with the potential reverse causality between the economic status and the gangster’s position in the network exploiting exogenous exposure to potential pre-immigration connections. In the absence of pre-immigration data I use the informational content of surnames, called isonomy, to measure the place of origin. The instrument is valid as long as conditional on the characteristics of the gang- sters (including his region of birth) such exposure influences the gangsters’ position inside the network but not the preference for specific housing needs. A standard deviation increase in closeness centrality increases economic status by about one standard deviation (100 percent).
