REPORTS

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

This financial year marked a new era for Fresh 92.7. What we achieved this year has been unparalleled in the station’s history. Very exciting times!

The Fresh 92.7 brand is as strong as ever in the community. We are the 5th most listened to FM radio station in Adelaide – the only community station to feature in the top 5 – with 142,000 people tuning in every week. 30 percent of Adelaide people aged over 15 listen to Fresh 92.7 each month and they listen for an average of 10 hours per week. We must be doing something right!

Fresh 92.7 has always been in the hearts and minds of the youth of Adelaide but it’s the first time our listeners had an active role in shaping our content strategy. RE:Fresh was embraced by the Fresh 92.7 community with great enthusiasm. The results gave us a cutting edge insight into our current and potential audience – who they are, what inspires them – and allowed us to truly position Fresh 92.7 as a station run for youth by youth.

But the passion for our station didn’t stop there.

Our TransMISSION campaign turned out to be one of the most successful fundraising drives ever undertaken in the station’s history. In need of a new transmitter, we asked our listeners to imagine a world without Fresh 92.7. And…wow, what a response!! We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the public and hit our fundraising target of $88,000 on the last day of the campaign. A special thank you to Police Credit Union, Adelaide City Council and Timms Real Estate for their support. We are so proud to partner with such fantastic organisations that share our values and vision to make a difference in the local community.

Financially Fresh 92.7 is in a strong position to achieve its goals for the next financial year and, indeed, its goals for the next three years which will be developed in early 2015 as part of the station’s new strategic plan.

With a skilled board of directors, a team of first class employees, a base of passionate and dedicated volunteers and state of the art facilities that would make any commercial station envious, Fresh 92.7 is well placed to exceed all expectations moving into the future!

VICE CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Another year passes at Fresh 92.7 and another stack of achievements, awards, opportunities and outstanding contributions from members and staff ensures that we are well placed for the future!

The Board is responsible for the overall corporate governance of the organisation and monitoring its strategic direction and performance. The Directors (Alicia Kinlay, Marcus Staker, Billie-Jo Barbara, Jeff Heysen, David Edwards and Alex McKenzie) who share their expertise in overseeing the core business and the direction of the organisation reflect an appropriate mix of skills and experience in management, administration, accounting, marketing, human resources and IT. We are delighted to welcome Jehad Ali to the Board in August 2014.

Next year will see Fresh 92.7 with the assistance of all members embark on developing a new strategic plan which will influence and guide the business direction for the next three years.

The governance regime of the organisation is excellent with Board sub-committees in the areas of Finance, Digital Media, Events, IT and the Fresh Future Fund. Board sub- committees meet regularly and where necessary appropriate professional external advice is obtained.

I congratulate Troy and his team for their hard work, professionalism and commitment to achieving the vision and strategic goals of the organisation.

In 2013/2014 growth and development has continued, new opportunities discovered and our amazing community radio station continues to punch well above its weight!

ANNUAL REPORT 2014 5

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2013/14 financial year marks a pivotal period in Fresh 92.7’s 16 year history. It’s the year we reflected on our past and looked towards the future to create a sustainable structure. Throughout this period we’ve learned a lot about ourselves as a business and a brand. We’ve had some tremendous successes and taken some risks. From this experience we’ve begun to redefine who we are as a station and focused acutely on our community – the listener.

An initiative of our Content department led by Tom Martin, who joined us from the commercial radio sector in August, the inaugural RE:Fresh saw Fresh 92.7 metaphorically swing open the front door, allowing the listener unparalleled access to the radio station. This open and honest forum provided an exciting insight into the listening habits and lifestyles of our community. The data uncovered a passionate and educated listenership with a thirst for new electronic music. This valuable feedback informed Fresh 92.7’s direction, and helped improve the stations output, from the way we schedule music to how presenters execute the product, the avenues used to engage our audience and ultimately how we value our brand.

In essence the RE:Fresh provided a rebirth of sorts. With confidence and a clear and singular focus on our community we have sort to deliver the best radio station possible, regardless of sector. Undoubtedly the key to our success has been our team. We’ve invested time in people with great attitudes and taught them the skills to deliver excellent radio and in developing others. We’re establishing a support structure which provides volunteers regular feedback and a pathway to employment in the media industry both within and beyond our business. Our sold out Production courses led by DJ/Producer Steve Hart have had great impact enabling the station the mechanism to not only support great electronic music on the radio, but provide an avenue for artist development in the studio.

The success of our transmitter fundraiser TransMISSION has further solidified the bond between Fresh 92.7 and our community. The generosity of listeners, members, clients and supporters in our journey reflects our audience are invested in the stations future. In 2014/15 we will continue to be open and honest, seek on-going feedback through consultation and identify opportunities for increased listener engagement across all platforms. Our aim is to deliver a solid, consistent and accessible product which evolves with our community and solidifies Fresh 92.7 as a sector leader with market impact, which is seen as essential to Adelaide’s vitality.

DIRECTOR OF SALE’S REPORT

It continues to be an exciting time for Fresh 92.7. Our product is going from strength to strength. We have had restructuring within the sales department which has resulted in an even stronger and more connected group of professionals from within and around radio media. This is fantastic for Fresh 92.7 as we become a greater consideration of employment for media sales professionals.

The last financial year saw some fantastic work by those prior and is now set to continue further heading into the 2014-2015 fin year. With the diverse range of experience accumulating at Fresh 92.7, Fresh 92.7 has grown even further its revenue through client targeted strategies, long term branding contracts, street team activations, larger community presence and greater accountability through proper internal processes, allowing us to operate quicker and more precisely. This provides more opportunities overall and builds on our brand respect with agency media buyers.

Once again we have a fully resourced sales team in place budgeted to achieve greater than $100k per month across the fin year from sponsorship airtime, street activations, station event sponsorships, digital streams, additional contra opportunities and more. As our brand builds respect, so do contra opportunities, allowing our revenue income to be better used for unavoidable hard costs.

We have solid revenue forecast as we approach the end of Q1 for the 2014 - 2015 financial year. This is very positive news being the growth achieved in the 2013-2014 financial year was considerable greater than the average CPI based off traditional year on year results. Therefore we have aimed for conservative and realistic budgets into the 2014-2015 financial year. The agency department has continued building strong relationships and as a result we are starting to see impressive results in not just revenue, but new client briefs being received.

In both direct and agency we are now talking to clients such as Plush furniture, The Good Guys, Hyundai, Harvey Norman, Yamaha, Suzuki, Barnacle Bills and McDonalds.

As a community radio station it is imperative we continue to work with local charities and other community groups such as Sammy D, Autism SA, Little Heroes Foundation, Scouts SA and the Leukaemia Foundation to mention only a few. We have continued building strong partnerships with local sporting clubs and groups such as the Adelaide 36’ers, Port Power, SANFL and SARL. Providing some fantastic events, integrated campaigns and cross promotions reflecting that Fresh 92.7 understands the youth of Adelaide.

There are more and more doors being opened for Fresh 92.7 in both revenue and community engagement, I have never found a more exciting business to work for, if I am to measure Fresh 92.7 on its opportunities and potential growth, as currently, it appears endless.

INITIATIVES

TRANSMISSION

Fresh 92.7’s most ambitious fundraising initiative to date, TransMISSION was an incredible on-air rollercoaster ride over four weeks in June 2014 which saw the station’s amazingly generous audience, clients and volunteers raise in excess of $88,000 to purchase a new transmitter! Three weeks into the campaign Fresh 92.7 sponsor Police Credit Union donated $22,108 complete with big novelty cheque! CEO Costa Anastasiou who joined Kat Leese on Kaboom to make the announcement said, “We’re pleased to be on board, to help you guys continue transmitting. You guys share some really important values like honesty, integrity, but importantly community and youth is really important so we’re here to support you.” With just one week to go, Fresh 92.7 supporters came out in force including $5,000 donations from Adelaide City Council and Timms Real Estate and some sizable donations from individual listeners. The final day of the campaign generated an incredible $14,000 including a further $4,000 from Police Credit Union which resulted in a serious in-studio celebration, party poppers and all!

The passion and commitment displayed by the whole Fresh 92.7 team was something to behold throughout the entire campaign. It was humbling to see the extraordinary generosity of listeners and members. Even more than achieving the target, TransMISSION represents a special bond between the station and our audience.

The Fresh 92.7 Engineering department are currently coordinating delivery and installation of our new transmitter with work expected to be completed in mid- November. ANNUAL REPORT 2014 18

THE RE:FRESH

The RE:Fresh was Fresh 92.7’s opportunity to really connect with our listeners in a way they’d never been spoken to before.

The RE:Fresh was a five week all-encompassing station promotion and online survey, which questioned our listeners on every aspect of Fresh 92.7.

We gained a specific and relevant amount of data that allowed for conscientious and informed decision making across all areas of the station. That data was also an indication of content consumption, as well as providing valuable sales information about the spending habits of listeners.

It created a new major revenue stream with clients buying into a huge on-air/online promotion as well as enabling us to create an entirely original and innovative client integration strategy.

Most of all, the RE:Fresh was an open celebration of honesty and a true connection between Fresh 92.7 and it’s listenership. It proved to be a tremendous catalyst for change. ANNUAL REPORT 2014 19

CTRL

CTRL was developed to give listeners the ability to positively influence Fresh 92.7 music daily in a way that has continued to enable our product to be consistent.

CTRL follows a simple daily structure beginning with listener’s texting ‘FTD’ with their name and song request to 199 Youth. Fresh 92.7 then collects the data received to generate the CTRL playlist 12 – 1pm weekdays. The audience engagement doesn’t stop at the initial text, listeners get the opportunity to introduce their request on the radio also.

CTRL has great benefits for the audience providing a chance for listeners to influence and host a part of the product every day while enabling Fresh 92.7 to play a more expansive music list in a managed way. The program has also provided station sponsors with an opportunity to align their business with a new dynamic property where prizing and other benefits can be introduced. In addition to this CTRL has helped us develop another meaningful volunteer role. While music content is determined by listeners, the final product is realised by volunteers who load music into Nexgen, source listener calls and notify announcers and Content team of the makeup of every CTRL show.

ONLINE

2013/14 has seen the Fresh 92.7 Digital Media team make progressive steps to grow the quality and quantity of relevant information on the station’s website to engage listeners.

The Fresh 92.7 site played a major role in our biggest projects of the year, including TransMISSION. The team delivered regular articles and updates to keep readers engaged throughout. For TransMISSION the site was integrated with Paypal enabling the station to accept donations on-line while displaying a running total of the funds raised. Statistics show that engagement with the site increased almost 100% during TransMISSION. Since achieving our fundraising target of $88,000 listeners have continued to remain informed on the progress of the transmitter project on-line.

On average approximately 20 new articles are published each week across all areas of the site including the introduction of sports coverage including the Adelaide 36ers NBL basketball season and the local SANFL football. The Events section is being developed to evolve into a ‘go to’ location for what is happening around Adelaide and listener interaction with the site has improved since the implementation of on-line submissions for CTRL requests and increased competitions activity. A new look website will soon launch further improving Fresh 92.7’s product on-line.

The Fresh 92.7 Facebook page has been steadily growing over the past year. Utilizing social media as an engagement tool has been a priority. We have seen notable growth when showcasing local and Fresh-specific content. Total page growth has increased by 8,500 people from August 1st 2013 and major station initiatives such as the RE:Fresh and TransMISSION have led to increased engagement in posts as well as click-throughs to the Fresh 92.7 Website, with particular highlights in March where we had an organic reach of 40,059*. Social media will continue to be a priority for Fresh 92.7 in the coming year, as well as expanding into new platforms more regularly such as Snapchat and Instagram.

CELEBRITIES & FESTIVALS

The 2013/ 14 financial year saw Fresh 92.7 rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in dance music. Influential brothers Guy & Howard from Disclosure paid Fresh 92.7 a visit just hours prior to their sold out show at HQ in early October 2013 and Tinie Tempah dropped by the studio in June for a chat before his sold out performance.

MUSIC PRODUCTION COURSES

Fresh 92.7 teamed with the School Of Audio Engineering (SAE) to develop Music Production courses led by station Production guru and DJ/Producer Steve Hart. The courses aimed to develop Adelaide electronic music artists from the ground up, are held quarterly and run for five weeks. The course looks at both the music creation process and, software tools, combining elements from popular House music styles the course develops the knowledge and techniques to produce professional-quality songs. Music SA and APRA share music industry insight and advice and students continue to be supported post-course through a forum developed to provide on-going support and share ideas.

FRESH FUTURE FUND

The Fresh Future Fund is a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (DRG). Its purpose is to raise funds to support the future of Fresh 92.7. The Fund does this in two key ways; by providing a variety of training programs to the Fresh 92.7 community and by raising money for critical infrastructure that is needed to help broadcast the music we love and have a passion for. Undoubtedly, the biggest event for the committee this year was TransMISSION – a fundraising campaign that raised money for the much-needed purchase of our new transmitter. This transmitter not only secures Fresh 92.7's broadcast capabilities for years to come, but it also provides ongoing benefit to the station through energy and transmission efficiencies. We take this opportunity to recognize and thank those who donated to the TransMISSION campaign. The success of this initiative and purchase of our new transmitter is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Adelaide community. In particular, we especially acknowledge the Police Credit Union, Adelaide City Council and Timm’s Real Estate who all gave significant contributions to the campaign. Driven by a passionate group of skilled Fresh 92.7 volunteers, the committee’s future direction is focused on creating awareness around the role that the Fresh Future Fund plays in supporting initiatives to keep Fresh 92.7 on air. By promoting community participation at a wide range of events, the Committee aims to raise much-needed funds to help Fresh 92.7 deliver on its valuable purpose in our community. Sales were driven by unique station content curated by Fresh 92.7 Production guru and Clubber’s Drive host Steve Hart. The show bag was so popular we sold out with several days to go, and filled back orders weeks after the Show was over. The celebration of our 16th year saw the radio station step outside of the traditional nightclub party environment and take the first step towards evolving the station’s brand. The Birthday Block Party was an opportunity to respond to listener feedback from the RE:Fresh and deliver an ‘experience’ which featured Motez, The Only, Jam Xpress, Tom Piper, Dirt Cheap, Hatch, Full Tote Odds and our incredible Fresh 92.7 DJs, .

New sponsors partnered with the station for our birthday – Tooheys Extra Dry (gold), Splash Adelaide (silver) and the Colonel Light Hotel (bronze). Fresh 92.7’s brand received an incredible amount of exposure across multiple platforms in the lead up to the event. The PR was wide spread. From City Mag (Advertiser lift out), a Splash Adelaide social media comp, the Adelaide Uni and UniSA newsletters, there was a Fringe Benefits website discount offer, it appeared on the Music SA website, Moshtix website and newsletter, Fowlers Live website and more.

Big screen ads for the party played in Wallis Cinemas’ in the lead up to the event and Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood even tweeted and Facebooked the event. Fresh 92.7 received exposure at UniSA O’Week too and we even hijacked the Gilles Street Market with a Birthday Block Party ‘takeover’ featuring Fresh 92.7 DJs and musicians.

TOP 92 COUNTDOWN 2013

The Top 92 of 2013 was a big success this year. Hundreds of listeners cast their vote on the best songs of the year, with Martin Garrix’s ‘Animals’ coming out on top.

Adelaide artists got a decent representation in the countdown; Uberjak’d, Steve Hart, Adrian V, Obsidian Radio and more were voted in. Last year’s Top 92 Countdown also represented the first foray into making the Top 92 a proper event.

We pulled out the barbecue and some drinks and all the members who volunteered to help on the day were able to enjoy themselves! We are looking forward to building on the Top 92 concept in 2014, engaging more listeners and attaching sponsorship to the countdown, making it more of an event and encouraging an even greater local representation in the countdown!

ADELAIDE CAREERS & EMPLOYMENT EXPO

The Adelaide Careers & Employment Expo continues to be an excellent opportunity for Fresh 92.7 to engage young Adelaide each year. In addition to broadcasting live amidst the many information stands, the station provided a chill out area where thousands of high school students who attend throughout the Expo can access interviews with industry leaders and experts in their fields of interest, allowing them to gather information and advice to help make an informed decision about their future career aspirations. This year Fresh 92.7 focused on engagement in addition to reflecting the Expo. The station had representatives on hand to discuss the volunteer roles available at the radio station, some which are specific to radio and media and others which are transferable to other industries. One of the highlights of the Expo was an impromptu beatbox performance from a student which resulted in a large crowd gathering around the Fresh 92.7 stage during Kaboom.

GOODLIFE 12-WEEK CHALLENGE

Fresh 92.7 participated in the Goodlife 12 Week Challenge in 2013. 12 Fresh volunteers teamed with 12 Fitness Directors from each Goodlife Health Club. It was volunteer vs volunteer and Fitness Director vs Fitness Director as each battled it out to achieve the best results! Jay ‘Bangers’ Burnell, Tim Attiwill, Jarryd Sweeney, Erin Wimshurst, Crystal Vas, Shantal Hart, Candice Surmei, Ryley Smithson, Shane Cross, Jay Antoney, Jessie Mattner and James ‘Evo’ Evenden all took part in the challenge. They each received 1-2 PT sessions per week plus a group boot camp Saturday mornings. We saw some underhanded tactics take place like the temptation of Royal Show food, and other no- no’s! Goodlife Health Clubs received great results for their sponsorship campaign and all Fresh 92.7 participants dramatically improved their fitness in the process.

FRESH 92.7’S CHRISTMAS PARTY!

Fresh 92.7’s Strategic Plan highlights exciting media pathways for the station’s committed volunteers. The 2013/14 financial year has seen more station contributors than ever before take their first step towards realising their dreams and securing employment in the media and related industries.

For example, 19 year old Crystal Vas displayed an exceptional attitude and committed to Fresh 92.7 because she recognised she would receive further opportunities in the radio industry if she upskilled. After nine months of dedication Crystal secured an Operations and on-air position at Tamworth 92.9FM.

At just 18, Liam Stapleton has followed a similar path to Crystal, in the sense that he’s committed a significant amount of time and a wonderful attitude to the station and its paid dividends.
