Prior to King Faisal Prize 2021 Laureates announcement tonight HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal chairs Service to Islam prize selection committee meeting Riyadh, KSA, February 10, 2021: A prize selection committee for King Faisal Prize for Service to Islam, headed by His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, Chairman of the King Faisal Prize Board, is meeting today to select the 2021 King Faisal Prize laureate in the Service to Islam category: one of the Prize’s five categories. The committee comprises the following members: His Excellency Kabine Komara, former Prime Minister of Guinea; H.E. Dr. Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation; H.E. Dr. Mohammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League; and Dr. Ahmed Abbadi, Secretary General of the Muhammadiyah Association of Scholars; H.E. Dr. Khalid Mathkour Al Mathkour, Member of Shariah Faculty at Kuwait University. The Service to Islam prize reflects the primary objectives of the King Faisal Prize to ingrain Islamic values and ideas in the society and highlight their key role in enriching knowledge and human development. It aims to benefit Muslims in their present and future through awarding and acknowledging the distinguished efforts of individuals and institutions that have excelled in serving Islam and Muslims. Following the Service to Islam selection committee meeting today, HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal will announce the names of the laureates for all the five Prize categories at a small function in Riyadh. The event will be streamed live at 8:00 pm (Riyadh time) through the King Faisal Prize’s website and its social media platforms (YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook). In line with current social distancing restrictions, the number of press personnel attending the ceremony will be limited accordingly. Previous laureates in the Service to Islam category of the King Faisal Prize have included rulers, heads of states, thought leaders and social scientists as well as some distinguished institutions. To qualify for the prize, an individual or an institution should have rendered exceptional services to Islam and Muslims through knowledge and deeds or provided other outstanding services that offer far-reaching benefits to Islam and Muslims. ### About King Faisal Prize: King Faisal Prize was established in 1977 by the King Faisal Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded in 1976 by the sons and daughters of the late King Faisal bin Abdulaziz, as a tribute to their father. The Prize was granted for the first time in 1979 in three categories: Service to Islam, Islamic Studies and Arabic Language & Literature. In 1981, two additional categories were introduced: one in Medicine and another in Science. The first prize in Medicine was awarded in 1982, and in Science two years later, in 1984. The main objectives of King Faisal Prize are to recognize distinguished initiatives that instil Islamic and humanitarian values in the society and contribute to the development of Muslim communities as well as the overall progress of mankind. .

1979-2018 4 INTRODUCTION King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) was initiated by the King Faisal Foundation (KFF) inspired by its humanitarian objectives and its commitment to preserve the true Islamic values which King Faisal, may Allah have mercy upon him, stood for. These values and principles, held dearly by the late King Faisal, may Allah rest his soul in peace, are firmly enshrined in the statute of the Prize. Indeed, the KFF established the KFIP as a lofty expression and reflection of late King Faisal’s unstinting support for endeavors slated to alleviate human suffering through the advancement of research and creative human thinking. These are core values which the late King Faisal passionately upheld, besides his respect for knowledge, empathy with scholars, and his appreciative recognition of their contributions to the advancement of nations. The King Faisal International Prize for Science (Chemistry) for this year 2011 (1432H) has been awarded jointly to: Professor George Whitesides (USA) Harvard University and Professor Richard Zare (USA) Stanford University Professor Whitesides has revolutionized the field of Self Assembly using molecular scale synthesis to control the macroscopic properties of surfaces. This and his work on soft lithography, where he developed practical methods to mold complex patterns on surfaces, are relevant to diverse fields such as molecular electronics, material science and biology. Professor Whitesides has recognized and developed connections between Nano science and biological systems, leading to new paradigms for drug design, which may enable new and inexpensive approaches to bioscience and medical diagnostics. Professor Zare is recognized for his fundamental contribution to the understanding of molecular dynamics and chemical reactions. He authored several important and widely cited texts on different Islamic issues, and traveled extensively in the Islamic world, preaching Islam, promoting its values, fighting heresies and superstition and helping in establishing Islamic educational and social institutions. HRH Prince Tunku Abd Al-Rahman, known in his country as the father of independence, has led the Malaysian independence movement during the British occupation of his country and became the first Prime Minister of Malaya after independence. He founded the Birkim Islamic Society which played a prominent role in promulgating Islam in Southeast Asia and in serving Muslim minorities there, especially Cambodian refugees in Malaya. He has also served as the first Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and a sponsor of the Regional Council for Islamic Daawa (Call) in southeast Asia.

HRH Prince Khaled AI Faisal, Director-General of King Faisal Foundation today announced the winners for the 2000 King Faisal International Prizes. The Selection Committees have this year chosen seven laureates for the five Prize topics. Addressing an audience of nearly 400 academics and journalists, Prince Khaled thanked the committee members and expressed his appreciation of their choices. "The objectives of King Faisal International Prize are to reward excellence and to encourage research that benefits mankind. The outstanding contributions made by this year's winners are sure to have meaningful consequences for many people." This year's category for Science was Biology. The prize was jointly awarded to: Professor Edward Osborne Wilson of Harvard University and Dr. John Craig Venter of the Institute for Genomic Research. Both laureates are American. Professor Wilson is one of the most outstanding biologists of the century. He has been a pioneer of major scientific disciplines: the field of sociobiology which seeks to elucidate the genetic basis of human and animal behavior, the study of species within ecosystems, and the conservation of the biological diversity of species.
