  • King Faisal Prize 1979-2018
1979-2018 4 INTRODUCTION King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) was initiated by the King Faisal Foundation (KFF) inspired by its humanitarian objectives and its commitment to preserve the true Islamic values which King Faisal, may Allah have mercy upon him, stood for. These values and principles, held dearly by the late King Faisal, may Allah rest his soul in peace, are firmly enshrined in the statute of the Prize. Indeed, the KFF established the KFIP as a lofty expression and reflection of late King Faisal’s unstinting support for endeavors slated to alleviate human suffering through the advancement of research and creative human thinking. These are core values which the late King Faisal passionately upheld, besides his respect for knowledge, empathy with scholars, and his appreciative recognition of their contributions to the advancement of nations. He strongly believed that progress of his nation and his countrymen can not be achieved without a resolute acquisition of knowledge that is commensurate with the values and teachings of Islam, as well as an in- depth understanding of human history and a genuine appreciation of the foundations in which the Islamic civilization is grounded, along with the conducive factors that helped this civilization blossom and thrive and positively contribute to universal human civilization. 5 The KFIP is driven by objectives animated by this thorough human perception, emanating from the cradle of the Islamic message, a land to which the hearts of Muslims throughout the world are attached, a land founded on the principles of this message and ruled by its principles. To be sure, these features endow the Prize with a distinct prestige among peer prizes that seek to motivate scientists and thinkers and encourage them to pursue further scientific and intellectual accomplishments that benefit humanity and help foster a better and brighter civilization.

  • The 21 Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain And
The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries.

  • Women in Britain's First Muslim Mosques
religions Article Women in Britain’s First Muslim Mosques: Hidden from History, but Not Without Influence Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University, Coventry CV1 2TL, UK; [email protected] Received: 30 November 2019; Accepted: 26 January 2020; Published: 28 January 2020 Abstract: Two of the earliest Muslim communities in Britain evolved around the first mosques in Liverpool and Woking (both—1889). The history of these early British Muslims is being recovered but little is known about the women (usually converts) in these communities. This article will draw upon original findings from archival research, to examine ‘leadership’ that women in these communities undertook and their influence in shaping their nascent British Muslim communities. The practical, theological and philosophical negotiations around gender roles, female leadership, and veiling and the social contexts within which they took place are examined. By uncovering historical responses to issues that remain topical in British Muslim communities, this article provides historical grounding for contemporary debates about female Muslim leadership in British Muslim communities. Keywords: Muslim women; leadership; British Muslim history; feminism; feminist history; British Islam; British Muslim studies; mosques 1. Introduction: Women in Britain’s First Mosques This article uses archival material linked to the two earliest British Muslim mosques, to examine the everyday lives of women in these historical communities and relates these insights to contemporary concerns about gender roles in Islam. The earliest Muslim communities in Britain evolved around the first mosques in Liverpool and Woking (both—1889). Muslim communities also emerged in the ports of Liverpool, Cardiff, East London and South Shields where c.

Introduction After the start of the twenty-first century, studying the relationship between Japan and Islam, including the study about “Japanese Policy toward Muslims( 「回教 政策」),” gets various results, including some from new source materials. There were some memoirs and interviews related to this policy, but these were, unfortunately, with the other source materials, both in Japanese and foreign languages. For a long time Japanese scholars have interest in this policy but hesitated to undertake aca- demic research for various reasons. However, Islamic studies recommenced after the war without any assessment of prior academic researches. Nowadays, although many source materials have disappeared, aggressive and corroborative studies have surfaced (see Misawa 2010). In this paper, we would like to introduce the new source material among the Japanese periodicals, in order to get more detailed information about Japanese relations with Islam before and during World War II.

In the late 19th century, news concerning Abdullah Quilliam and the establishment of a community of British Muslim converts in Liverpool spread across the world, particularly among Muslims. As a well-placed Victorian convert to Islam in the heart of British Empire, Quilliam symbolized many things to Muslim communities worldwide, each group perceiving him in whatever light they needed to see him. For some Muslim converts in America he was a model, a mentor, and a mediator. For many Muslims in the British Empire, particularly West Africa, Quilliam provided a morale boost, a legitimatization for holding on to their religion and culture in the face of colonialism as well as a supporter—materially, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS and JAPAN a Pan-Islamist Mediator, Abdurreshid Ibrahim
13 MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS AND JAPAN A Pan-Islamist mediator, Abdurreshid Ibrahim Komatsu Hisao Since the end of the nineteenth century, especially after the Russo-Japanese War in 1904–1905, Muslim intellectuals began to take substantial interest in the emer- gence of modern Japan, and to develop a positive image of Japan and the Japanese people. In general, they supposed that Japan adopted Western civilization without abandoning its traditional culture, becoming one of the most developed countries in the world within a short period after the Meiji revolution. Of these Muslim intellectuals interested in Japan, Abdurreshid Ibrahim (1857–1944) was among the most outstanding.1 He not only introduced Japan and Japanese people in detail to the broad Turkic Muslim audience through his extensive travels, by means of his journal, Âlem-i ⁄slâm: Japonya1da intivar-ı ⁄slâmiyet [The World of Islam: The Spread of Islam in Japan],2 but also made efforts later in his life to establish a close relationship between the Muslim world and Japan based on his Pan-Islamic (⁄ttihad-ı ⁄slâm) ideology and strategy. This essay is a preliminary survey of his vision of modern Japan and aims to present basic information for further research on a comprehensive subject, Islam and Japan, the significance of which is clearly growing in the contemporary world. A leading Pan-Islamist in Russia We will begin with an overview of Ibrahim’s activities before his arrival in Japan in 1909.3 He was born in Tara, a city in the Tobol1sk governorate, Western Siberia. According to his autobiography, his Tatar family came from the descendants of Bukharans who had migrated from Central Asia to Western Siberia.
