Abstrakt Tato diplomová práce se zabývá dvěma romány z pera Roberta Gravese Já, Claudius a Claudius bůh a jejich seriálovou adaptací z produkce britské stanice BBC, která vznikla v roce 1976. Na úplném začátku této práce jsou krátce popsány životy a díla starověkých autorů (jmenovitě Suetonius, Tacitus, Velleius Paterculus, Cassius Dio a Josephus Flavius). Na začátku jsou také popsány principové (císařové) Římské říše, kteří Římu vládli v období, do kterého jsou oba zkoumané romány zasazeni (jde tedy o Augusta, Tiberia, Caligulu a samozřejmě Claudia). Tato část diplomové práce je založena na dílech moderních badatelů. Ti se kupříkladu dnes nedomnívají, že Livia byla úkladná vražedkyně nebo že Tiberius byl zabit Caligulou nebo Macronem. V diplomové práci jsou srovnávány oba romány s historickými prameny (Suetonius, Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Josephus Flavius aj.), z nichž Robert Graves při psaní svého díla čerpal, což je vlastně důvodem, proč je mezi antickými prameny a romány tolik podobností. Robert Graves kromě toho převzal i úhel pohledu těchto autorů. To znamená, že převzal i různé jejich názory a domněnky, což je důvodem, proč je kupříkladu románový Tiberius celkem zápornou postavou. Dále se práce zabývá využitím filmu ve výuce obecně a obsahuje také návrh hodiny, ve které by mohl být zkoumaný seriál využit. Klíčová slova Claudius, literatura, film, Robert Graves, didaktika Abstract The main interest of this master’s thesis are novels by Robert Graves I, Claudius and Claudius the God and an adaptation of the novels in a TV series I, Claudius produced by BBC in 1976. At the beginning of this master’s thesis are described lives of the ancient authors (Suetonius, Tacitus, Velleius Paterculus, Cassius Dio and Josephus Flavius) and their works. At the beginning are also described princeps (emperors) of the Roman Empire, who ruled during the time period of the plot (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula and of course Claudius). This part is based on the modern researches. The master’s thesis compares the novels to ancient historic sources (Suetonius, Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Josephus Flavius et al.), that Robert Graves used during the writing of his novels. That’s why there are many similarities between Graves’ novels and ancient sources. Robert Graves took point of view of ancient authors. It means that in the novels are their opinions and theories. For example, Tiberius in the novel is a negative person, because Tacitus and Cassius Dio thought bad of him. The second interest of this master’s thesis is to describe use of a film in the education. There is a scheme of a lesson in that could be I, Claudius used.     Emperors of Rome -- The Bad Side of Monarchy THE ROMAN EMPEROR CALIGULA (Reign 37 - 41 A.D) Caligula was not quite 25 years old when he took power in 37 A.D. At first, his succession was welcomed in Rome: He announced political reforms and recalled all exiles. But in October of 37, a serious illness unhinged Caligula, leading him to spend the remainder of his reign exploring the worst aspects of his nature. For much of human history, emperors and kings called themselves gods and ruled by what eventually came to be called ‘Divine Right.’ Divine means relating to heaven, god, or gods, depending on the culture and the religious beliefs of that culture. By claiming to either be a god or to be god like, kings throughout history increased their power, making it seem that if anyone questioned their power, they were questioning god(s). Roman emperor Caligula lavished money on building projects, from the practical (aqueducts and harbors) to the cultural (theaters and temples) to the downright bizarre (requisitioning hundreds of Roman merchant ships to construct a 2-mile floating bridge across the Bay of Bauli so he could spend two days galloping back and forth across it). In 39 and 40 A.D he led military campaigns to the Rhine and the English Channel, where he ordered battles for theatrical displays, commanding his troops to “plunder the sea” by gathering shells in their helmets). His biographer Suetonius quotes his often repeated phrase, “Remember that I have the right to do anything to anybody.” He tormented high-ranking senators by making them run for miles in front of his chariot.

    ‘ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN’: CLAUDIUS AND THE POLITICS OF AD 41 A.G.G. Gibson University of St Andrews The violent overthrow of a regime causes disjuncture and this can have unexpected outcomes. The combined conspiracies to kill Gaius (Caligula) in ad41 descended into chaos because of the ferocious reaction of the Germani (the imperial bodyguard) and the discretion of the Praetorians. Claudius emerged from the metaphorical dust and ashes as princeps and this essay will look at how he cemented his position through his exploitation of issuing coinage, one of the permanent ways to disseminate propaganda. In this case it was the distribution of a political manifesto. The essay will concentrate on one iconographic image in particular, the aureus and denarius PRAETOR RECEPT, PraetorianiRecepti, usually translated as the ‘Praetorians Received’ and shows the debt Claudius owed to the Guard; they greet each other in an act of mutual trust,1 it is one of the seven diferent issues struck in the early months of Claudius’ rule during ad41, and the companion to the IMPER RECEPT issue, Imperator Receptus, which can be translated as ‘Imperator Received’, (loyalty/assistance from the Guard who took Claudius to the Praetorian camp after the murder).2 I will argue that the iconography was con dent and its subtlety had far-reaching consequences for Rome. Initially there will be a brief outline of Gaius’ murder followed by a consideration of the act of succession in the early rst century and the subsequent political manoeuvrings of the new emperor, Claudius. 1 RIC 1.38; BMCRE I 8–10 are from ad41/2.

In AD 39, he became consul suffectus, no doubt as a conse- quence of his well-attested connections to the domus Augusta and prob- ably as a token of imperial gratitude for the financial profits Gaius made out of the prosecutions of the highway commissioners that Corbulo’s ran- corous (and homonymous) father had pursued ever since the rule of Tiberius. Although in 43, Claudius forced Corbulo Maior to repay a part of the fines to his victims, the star of Corbulo the Younger continued to rise. In 47, he achieved military repute as legatus Augusti pro praetore exercitus Germaniae inferioris, receiving the ornamenta triumphalia for his ruthless campaign against several Germanic tribes. Around AD 52, Corbulo got the prestigious proconsulate of Asia. That Nero also had complete confidence in Corbulo up to and including the eventful year of AD 65, is irrefutable1.     The Annals of Imperial Rome 321 The Annals of Imperial Rome Tacitus (A.D. c.56-c.120), the greatest of the Roman historians, chronicles the early Roman Empire, from the death of the first emperor Augustus (in A.D. 14) up to the years of the First Jewish-Roman War (A.D. 63-73). The Annals is his final work. It portrays the pathological souls of tyrants, the psychology of power politics, and the preciousness and precariousness of liberty. 323 Tacitus Book I The city of Rome was originally in the hands of kings; liberty and the consulship were instituted by Lucius Brutus. Dictatorships were as- sumed temporarily. The Board of Ten did not exercise control beyond a two-year period, nor was the military tribunes’ consular authority long prevalent. Neither Cinna’s regime nor Sulla’s was lengthy. The power of Pompey and Crassus quickly gave way to Caesar, likewise the armies of Lepidus and Antony to Augustus, who as ‘first citizen’ re- ceived everything, weary as it was from civil strife, into his command. For the Roman people of old – their successes and misfortunes – writ- ers of renown produced a record, and the tale of Augustus’ times did not lack reputable talents until the spread of flattery proved a deter- rent. The affairs of Tiberius and Gaius, Claudius and Nero, in their prosperity, were falsified through fear and after their fall were written with hatreds still fresh. Thus my plan is to report a few final things about Augustus, then Tiberius’ principate and the rest, without anger or favour, from whose causes I consider myself distant.

    BIOGRAPHIES AGRIPPINA THE ELDER (C. 15 BC - AD 33) Julia Vipsania Agrippina, mother of Caligula and daughter of M. Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia (daughter of Augustus). She married Germanicus around AD 5 and bore him nine children, six of whom survived infancy. She accompanied Germanicus to the Rhine frontier (14-16) and was with him in the East when he died (19). Widow of the popular Germanicus, and mother of four potential successors to Tiberius, she became a focus for senators who opposed the Praetorian Prefect Sejanus. Despised by Tiberius, she and her adherents came under attack in the late 20s, culminating in the arrest of Agrippina and her elder son Nero in 29. Convicted by the senate, Agrippina and Nero were exiled to the Pontian Islands, where they died in 33. Her younger son Drusus was arrested in 30 and died in prison in Rome in 33. Her youngest son, Caligula, survived her, as well as three daughters, Julia Agrippina, Julia Drusilla, and Julia. AGRIPPINA THE YOUNGER (AD 15 - 59) Julia Agrippina, eldest daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder and sister to Caligula. She married Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus and bore him one son, Nero (the future emperor). She was honored along with her sisters Drusilla and Livilla during Caligula’s principate, but was implicated in the Lepidus-Gaetulicus “conspiracy” in AD 39 and banished with her sister Livilla to the Pontine Islands. Claudius, her uncle, recalled her from exile in 41 and married her in 49. She quickly became powerful (with the aid of Pallas, Seneca, and Burrus), receiving the title Augusta in 50 and persuading Claudius to adopt her son Nero.

Farney The purpose of this text is to compare the praetorian guard to the German bodyguard (consisting of both the Equites Singulares Augusti and the Germani Corpores Custodes). These forces existed around the same time period, the first three centuries CE, and had a very similar role. This paper looks to answer the questions: why were two guards needed inside of Rome? what were their functions? and how did they affect the empire? The conclusion is made that two guards were not needed inside of Rome; it was simply a helpful luxury to keep a German bodyguard as well. The praetorians on the other hand were a necessary force that was essential to overseeing the life and death of the emperor. ii Preface I have always been fascinated by ancient history and ancient military forces. Going into the planning stages for this piece I knew that I wanted to focus on an aspect of an ancient military force.

    THE TWELVE CAESARS GAIUS SUETONIUS TRANQUILLUS was born into a family of equestrian rank, probably in AD 70; his father had served as a military tribune under the emperor Otho. The place of his birth is unknown (possibly Hippo Regius in North Africa), but he was in Rome by the 90s. He practised as an advocate, perhaps for only a brief time, and embarked on a public career under the patronage of Pliny the Younger; he may have served on his sta when Pliny was governor of the province of Pontus and Bithynia in AD 110–11. Suetonius also devoted himself to scholarship from an early age, producing a number of learned works that are now almost entirely lost; the most important of these was On Illustrious Men, a collection of over 100 brief lives of notable Roman writers, parts of which still survive. He served as imperial secretary ‘for studies’ and ‘for libraries’, probably under the emperor Trajan, and as imperial secretary in charge of correspondence under the emperor Hadrian, a post from which he was dismissed in AD 122. He was at that time at work on his magnum opus, The Twelve Caesars, the only one of his works to survive virtually complete. He died perhaps sometime after the year AD 130. The poet and novelist ROBERT GRAVES was born in 1895, the son of the poet Alfred Graves and his wife Amy, the great–niece of the historian Leopold von Ranke. He was educated at Charterhouse (1909–14), where he began publishing poetry. After leaving school, he served in the army during the First World War, and was severely wounded in the Battle of the Somme (1916).

Wilhelmine Germany and the First World War, 1890-1918 Caligula: A Study in Roman Imperial Insanity by Ludwig Quidde (1894) In 1894, the historian, politician, and peace activist Ludwig Quidde (1858-1941) published a pamphlet entitled Caligula: A Study in Roman Imperial Insanity. It was ostensibly a study of the Roman emperor Caligula and the dire consequences of his psychological imbalances on the Roman Empire. Contemporary readers, however, would have recognized the real subject of Quidde’s study – Kaiser Wilhelm II. His “historical” account of an erratic emperor whose reign was marked by decline and decadence constitutes a thinly veiled critique of political life in Wilhelmine Germany. Quidde narrowly escaped conviction for lèse majesté by denying the charges and thereby forcing the prosecution into the awkward position of insisting upon the similarities between Caligula and Wilhelm II. The incident nonetheless effectively ended his scholarly career. (Professors in Germany, it is important to note, were all members of the German civil service and, as such, government employees.) Gaius Caesar, known by his epithet Caligula (“Bootikin”), was still very young, not yet matured into manhood, when he was unexpectedly called to rule. Murky and eerie were the events surrounding his accession, wondrous were the previous fortunes of his house. His father [Germanicus] had succumbed to a treacherous fate far from home in the prime of his life, and among the people there was much talk about the mysterious circumstances of his death; people did not shrink from the most terrible accusations, and suspicion reached even those close to the old emperor [Tiberius].1 The people had lost a beloved figure in him; he had enjoyed a popularity like no other member of the imperial house.2 He was familiar to the soldier from the many campaigns in which he had shared the hardships of war with the common man; the German land, the regions along the Rhine, resounded with his name.
