Illustrator Clement Hurd said in that initially the book was to be published using the pseudonym "Memory Ambrose" for Brown, with his illustrations credited to "Hurricane Jones". Goodnight Moon had poor initial sales: only 6, copies in fallwhen it was first published. The NYPL and other libraries did not acquire it at first. Annual sales Goodnight Moon from about 1, copies in to almost 20, in ; [3] bythe total number of copies sold exceeded 4 million. The Goodnight Moon is a rhyming poem, describing an anthropomorphic bunny's bedtime ritual of saying "good night" to Goodnight Moon inanimate and living objects in the bunny's bedroom: a red balloon, a pair of socks, the bunny's dollhouse, a bowl of mush, and Goodnight Moon kittens, among others. However, when reprinted in Goodnight Moonthe udder was reduced to an anatomical blur to avoid the controversy that Goodnight Moon. The top shelf of the bookshelf holds an open copy of The Runaway Bunnyand there is a copy of Goodnight Moon on the nightstand. A telephone is mentioned Goodnight Moon in the book. The primacy of the reference to the telephone indicates that the bunny is in his mother's room and his mother's bed. From the time of its publication in and untilthe book was "banned" by the New York Public Library due to the then head children's librarian Anne Carroll Moore 's hatred of the book. Author Susan Cooper writes that the book is possibly the only "realistic story" to gain the universal affection of a fairy-tale, although Goodnight Moon also noted that it is actually a "deceptively simple ritual" rather than a story. Writer Ellen Handler Spitz suggests that Goodnight Moon teaches "young children that life can be trusted, that life has stability, reliability, and durability. The special features an animated short of Goodnight Moonnarrated by Susan Sarandonalong with six other animated segments of children's bedtime stories and lullabies with live-action clips of children reflecting on a series of bedtime topics in between, a reprise of Goodnight Moon at the end, and the Everly Brothers ' " All I Have To Do Is Dream " playing over the closing credits. • “100 Children's Books That Belong in Every Library”
“100 Children’s Books that Belong in Every Library” A chapter from Children’s Literature Gems by Elizabeth Bird ALA Editions purchases fund advocacy, awareness, and accreditation programs for library professionals worldwide. 100 Children’s Books That Belong in Every Library (Snarky Annotations Included) No two children’s librarians will ever come up with the same list of the 100 children’s books for children up to age twelve that every library should own. This is my own personal list of titles and preferences that I think people (librarians as well as patrons) should seriously consider owning. They have been selected through my work with children and their presence in the literary canon. These are titles that will stand the test of time. Most, if not all, should still be in print. Board Books (Birth to Age 2) Board books are a tricky group to judge. In general you want books with bright colors that contrast nicely, rounded corners, and a jolly text. There are hundreds of fine and fabulous board books to choose from, but these three are my favorites. Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly Bang—A great number book where a parent and child count various items in a room. A sweet title containing father-daughter love. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown—Comfort reading in the form of saying good night to various objects. I’m not personally a fan, but as bedtime fare goes, this title is famous for all the right reasons. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle—A color book, number book, interactive book, and title with scientific underpinnings to boot.
