Especially after the late Kim Jong Il admitted to former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in September 2002 that agents from the DPRK had kidnapped some Japanese nationals during the Cold War, the abduction issue, which remains unresolved, became highly politicized in Japan. Pyongyang, however, has continued to maintain for some time now that the abduction issue was settled several years ago, while also insisting that Japan must make amends to the DPRK for its past colonization of the Korean Peninsula. For its part, Tokyo has remained adamant about the need to resolve the abduction issue, repeatedly stressing that it is one of the few major problems preventing the normalization of Japan-North Korea relations. -

This thesis aims to explore this question by looking at Japan’s foreign policy in the region and uncovering how political actors manipulated the concept of nationalism in foreign policy discourse. -

Introduction Japanʼs policies toward the Democratic Peopleʼs Republic of Korea (DPRK) are not only issues concerning bilateral relations, but also complex international political issues which are determined by the complex political situations in Northeast Asia, including division of the Korean Peninsula, the confrontations between the two camps during the Cold War, and the extension of the United States of America (US)-South Korea alliance as well as the US-Japan alliance after the Cold War. It can be seen that all of the above affect the geopolitical developments in Northeast Asia as well as the foreign strategy of every country in the region.1 Moreover, Japanʼs policy toward North Korea has a direct impact on the changes in Japanʼs domestic political situation. Thus, it can be seen that only when putting Japan-DPRK relations in the political framework of Northeast Asia and analyzing through multilateral perspectives, can we grasp the essence of Japan-DPRK relations and predict the future trend.2 North Korea is the only country among those which were invaded by Japan that has yet to realize a normalization of diplomatic relations with Japan. -

Largely because of the strong security relationship between the United States and Japan, which for the past several years has had to contend with the North Korean missile and nuclear weapons issues, this paper also examines Washington's changing position on the abduction issue. Through the framing analysis of articles on the issue of comfort women in three different newspapers in China, this research examines similarities and differences in media treatment of the topic. While differences in media frames reflect variations in the national, provincial and metro orientations of different newspapers, overall media memorialization of the topic by the three newspapers reveals that the cultural wound is still not healed both on a national and individual level. The paper argues that Chinese media should take the responsibility of crafting new identities for comfort women, in order to help them finally gain respect.
