He led the peo-ple a-stray. He led the peo-ple a-stray. 3. Now Nim-rod was sure that the Lord would be an-gry, and He might de-stroy them. "Build cit-y and tow-er to reach unto heav-en!" was what he re-quired. The Tow-er of Ba-bel grew tall-er and tall-er, they burned bricks with fire. They built with mor-tar and mud. "Con-found the lan- guage and spread! Con-found the lan-guage and spread!" 6. The Broth-er of Ja-red and all of his fam-i-ly plead-ed for mer-cy! They hoped that the Lord would-n't con-found their lang-uage, or give them the curs-ing. So Mor-i- an-cum-er prayed, So Mor-i-an-cum-er prayed. 7. The Lord led the Broth-er of Jar-ed and showed him a new land, a choice land. And they crossed the o-cean in eight light-ed bar-ges and came by the Lord's hand. He brought them un-to this land! He brought them un-to this land! Repeat: Jared's peo-ple had come... A-mer-i-ca was their home! A-mer-i-ca was their home! 10 WEEK #1 – 2200 B.C. -- ACTIVITY Tower of Babel ROLE PLAY BUILD THE TOWER -- Three or four students are chosen. (Choose students who are bi-lingual, or who know how to speak Pig-Latin.* If bi- lingual students are not available, have them "make up" any unintelligible gibberish that they wish, after the languages are changed.) The chosen students build a tower with large plain cardboard boxes. Unbeknown to the class, another student is hidden inside the bottom box of the "tower." JARED AND MORIANCUMER: Two boys are chosen. One to be Jared (political leader) and the other Moriancumer (prophet). Moriancumer tells Jared that the Lord is angry with the people for not obeying His commandment to spread throughout the whole earth to build their families. Moriancumer reports to Jared that the Lord is going to change all the peoples' languages. If they can’t understand each other, they will form groups and find their own places to live. THEN they will spread out! Shocked, Jared pleads with Moriancumer to ask the Lord to please not confound their language. Moriancumer leaves the room for a moment and comes back to report to Jared (who is pacing back and forth in anguish) that the Lord granted their wish. Jared is jubilant! Then he thinks about his friends. Jared asks his brother to inquire of the Lord about their friends, and if they too could be spared the awful judgment, and not have their language confounded. Moriancumer goes out and returns to report that the Lord agreed. Jared is very happy. Then Jared asks where they should go and what they should do. Moriancumer goes out again, and then reports that they are to build barges and go to the Promised Land--a land choice above all other lands. They both exit joyfully. LANGUAGES ARE CONFOUNDED: Suddenly there is thunder and lightning (class members in the "audience" pound on tables and the lights in the room are flashed off and on). The tower begins to sway back and forth until it is destroyed. (Student inside the bottom box slowly rocks back and forth & up and down to topple the other boxes to the ground.) Thunder stops. Lights stay off. Shocked and dismayed, the children who were building the tower begin to speak different languages. They become angry with each other and separate - taking their imaginary families with them to separate parts of the classroom. CONCLUSION: Jared and Moriancumer enter, and Moriancumer proclaims to the audience: "And the Lord said unto me, 'I will go before thee unto a land which is choice above all the lands of the earth. And there will I bless thee and thy seed,...And there shall be none greater than the nation which I will raise up unto me of thy seed, upon all the face of the earth." (Ether 1:42-43) SONG: All the class and role-play participants sing either "Moriancumer'' or "The tower of Babel" song. (These songs are in the student workbooks.) * Pig-Latin is spoken like this: Take the first letter of a word an put it on the END of the word, adding “AY” to the sound. Examples: (1) ig-pay atin-lay is how to say the words Pig Latin. (2) Ook-bay is book. (3) short words such as “of” simply have “ay” added – of-ay or for the word I: I-yay (4) ormon-may is Mormon. 11 WEEK #2 – 600 B.C. -- MUSIC .

According to Smith, The Book of Mormon represented the English translation of an authentic record, written in “Reformed Egyptian,” concerning ancient Israelites who migrated to the Americas in approximately 600 B.C.E. Smith’s purported translation of this sacred history, however, did not occur by traditional means. Rather than directly consulting the record and providing an English rendition, Smith employed a method of divination by placing a “seer stone” into the bottom of his hat, holding the hat to his face to shut out all light, and then he proceeded to dictate the entire text of The Book of Mormon in an extended oral performance, without the aid of notes or manuscripts. By his side, Smith’s scribes wrote down the entire text verbatim in the moment Smith uttered them. As a result, at over 500 printed pages, The Book of Mormon stands as one of the longest recorded oral performances in the history of the United States.

    AND A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM: THE WISE CHILD FOLK MOTIF IN MORMON DISCOURSE SPENCER LINCOLN GREEN Prevalent in folktales throughout the world and in popular media in America, the “Wise Child” whose innocence sees through the deceptions, greed, envy, and ingratitude of his or her elders flourishes in Mormon official and lay discourse. Paradoxical in its inherent reversal of hierarchies in a religion often noted for its hierarchies, the wise child, rather than challenging adults and exposing adult foibles to mockery, is used to gently remind all members of their shortcomings and encourage greater adherence to church doctrines. Since the wise child in folk and popular culture is most often a trickster figure who points out foibles and follies in adults, how has it come to be used so often in Mormon discourse by those very adults and authority figures who are usually the butt of its jokes? This paper seeks to look at the significance of the wise child in Mormon official discourse, the transformation it has undergone there, and what that has to say about Mormon culture. While the wise child is prevalent throughout Mormon discourse, this study is limited to the examples in the Spring and Fall sessions of General Conference. General Conference is a biannual meeting consisting of five two hour meetings over a Saturday and Sunday in April and October when Church Leaders present doctrinal and exhortive talks to church membership worldwide. This has been occurring since 1830 and each General Conference is identified by season or month and number ordinal number. My texts then come from the 182nd Spring and Fall or April and October General Conferences of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    Law and War in the Book of Mormon John W. Welch At rst, law and war appear to be opposites. Especially in the modern experience, wars are thought to be basically extralegal. They break out when law and order break down; rules and conventions can become next to meaningless in the heat and rage of war. On closer examination, however, even war cannot be conducted successfully in a total state of anarchy or chaos. To a greater or lesser extent, all civilizations accept and employ certain laws, rules, customs, rituals, and conventional practices in times of war. In ancient Israel and in the Book of Mormon, this was certainly also the case. Although no code of martial law as such has survived from the ancient Near East—and indeed it is doubtful that such a code in the modern sense of the term ever existed in the ancient world — the texts that have survived show that laws and social rules regulated both domestic and international aspects of war in ancient Israel and in ancient Mesopotamia.1 The main sources regarding martial law under the law of Moses are found in Deuteronomy (see especially 13:12-16; 20:10-14, 19-20; 21:10-14; 23:1-14; and 24:5).2 One may also extract from the normative and narrative texts in the Old Testament certain rules and principles that evidently regulated conduct during times of war.3 One may further examine how war inuenced the administration of justice or the enforcement of social obligations among the Israelites and the people they came in contact with.
