The presence of such a character, even in ovigerous specimens, suggests the possibility of it being a characteristic of genus Salmoneus.This case is compared to that of Automate,where males lack the appendix masculina. PISTOL SHRIMP Pistol shrimp are very different from most other species of shrimp in that they burrow and have the ability to stun and kill their various prey without ever touching them. Most pistol shrimp are in the Alpheidae family and Alpheus genus and are found all over the world. Pistol shrimp get their name from their particular ability to snap their modified larger claw in order to injure prey or predators. The snap is so powerful that it creates a microscopic bubble which shoots out of the claw towards its target. Remarks. — In view of the large distance between the type locality and the present site of collection, a comparison was made with the type series (SAM catalogue number Al 1086). The present specimens agree very closely to both the type series and Barnard's (1962) description, although some minor differences were noted. The rostrum falls just short of the middle of the second segment of the antenna in the larger specimen (fig. la, b), whilst only reaching to the end of the first antennal segment in the smaller specimen, whereas in both type specimens the rostrum reaches to the middle of the second antennal segment.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Six species of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955, including two new species, are reported from the tropical western Atlantic. Salmoneus ortmanni (Rankin, 1898) is reported for the first time from Atol das Rocas, Brazil and Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. Salmoneus carvachoi n. sp. is described on the basis of specimens previously misiden- tified as S. ortmanni from Guadeloupe, French Antilles, and is also known to occur in Brazil. The main difference between S. carvachoi n. sp. and S. ortmanni is the much more slender dactylus of the third to fifth pereiopods in the first species. The two species also appear to be ecologically separated: S. carvachoi n. sp. prefers silt-mud bottoms of estuar- ies and mangroves, while S. ortmanni occurs mostly in the rocky-coralline algae intertidal and on seagrass beds with reef patches, under rocks and coral rubble. Salmoneus rocas n. sp. is described on the basis of a single specimen collected at Atol das Rocas; this species belongs to the mostly Indo-Pacific S. serratidigitus (Coutiere, 1896) species complex. The new species is a member of the S. paraneptunus Coutière species complex and is distinguished from other species in that group by the combination of four carpal segments in the second pereopod, uropodal exopod with 2nd disto- lateral tooth smaller than the other two teeth and set in line with movable spine, and a small blade on the scaphocerite. Synalpheus microneptunus n. sp. is the smallest species in the complex (2.2-2.9 mm CL) and lives in small colonies, usu- ally with fewer than 10 individuals, often with a single breeding female. Synalpheus thele Macdonald, Hultgren & Duffy is reported for the first time from outside its type locality in Jamaica.
