CROATIA FAMILY ADVENTURE June 21 to 28, 2021 FACULTY LEADER CROATIA FAMILY ADVENTURE June 21 to 28, 2021 Discover idyllic Krka National Park on foot, pausing to take in the verdant beauty of the park’s seven waterfalls. En garde in a sword and archery class at the medieval fortress of Klis, perched high above Split and home to many of Croatia’s rulers over the past millennium. Cruise amid the picturesque islands of the Dalmatian Coast, stopping to swim and to visit with a local family that has been producing honey for generations. FACULTY LEADER Emanuele Lugli Emanuele Lugli, who joined the faculty of Stanford’s department of art and art history in 2018, teaches and writes about late medieval and early modern art with an emphasis on European painting, the lives of Renaissance cities and the history of trade. He is an expert on Renaissance Venice and has written about Mediterranean harbors and journeys. His most recent book is The Making of Measure and the Promise of Sameness, a history of measurement and a study on how it shapes our ideas. During our program, he will discuss with us the architecture of the wonderful Cathedral of St James in Šibenik, the invention of the quarantine in Dubrovnik and Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace in Split. Of travel, Professor Lugli says, "Since I was a kid, I have traveled Europe extensively in search of the curious and unusual. I walked for days in the Alps to visit a remote fort. I once waited for eight hours for a monastery to open so that I could see a hardly-ever-photographed relic. In a way, my passion for historic sites and art fuels my passion for traveling, and they both stem from the belief that some of the most unique and inspiring objects can only exist in remote locations." — Author, The Making of Measure and the Promise of Sameness (University of Chicago Press, 2019) — Assistant professor of art history, department of art and art history, Stanford University, since 2018 — Hanna Kiel Fellow, Villa | Tatti, Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, 2016–2017 — Lecturer, University of York, 2012–2018 — Postdoctorate, Kunsthistorisches Institut–Max Planck Institut, 2010–2012 — PhD, 2009, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University ITINERARY Monday, June 21 Arrive Split Settle in at our hotel and gather this evening for a welcome reception and dinner. ARRILLAGA ALUMNI CENTER | 326 GALVEZ STREET | STANFORD, CA 94305 CROATIA FAMILY ADVENTURE June 21 to 28, 2021 Air Arrangements You are responsible for booking and purchasing airfare to the start location and from the end location of the program. These air purchases are NOT included in the program cost. To assist you in making these independent arrangements, we will send you details with your confirmation materials on when to arrive and depart. What to Expect We consider this program to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Some days require early-morning starts and/or go into the late evenings; we often have a full schedule of excursions, lectures and special events. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking, with tours as long as three hours on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Many sites and buildings do not have elevators and also do not allow buses to pull up in front, thus requiring a walk of several minutes, sometimes uphill, to reach the entrance. Our journey requires travel by motor coach, with most drives no longer than 90 minutes. There are a few excursions by motorboat on this program, and although these boat trips are brief, travelers sensitive to seasickness should be prepared. Average temperatures in Croatia in late June range from the mid-70s F to the mid- 80s; come prepared for potentially hot weather. Although all of the hotels and motor coaches used in this program are air-conditioned, some of the museums and other sites we visit are not. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 6 years of age and older on this program. TERMS AND CONDITIONS Eligibility We encourage membership in the Stanford Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $300 more than the members' price. A person traveling as a paid guest of a current member will not be charged the nonmember fee.

  • Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland As Cultural Mediators
Chapter 10 Connectivity, Mobility, and Mediterranean “Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland as Cultural Mediators Gülru Necipoğlu Considering the mobility of persons and stones is one way to reflect upon how movable or portable seemingly stationary archaeological sites might be. Dalmatia, here viewed as a center of gravity between East and West, was cen- tral for the global vision of Ottoman imperial ambitions, which peaked during the 16th century. Constituting a fluid “border zone” caught between the fluctu- ating boundaries of three early modern empires—Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian Habsburg—the Dalmatian coast of today’s Croatia and its hinterland occupied a vital position in the geopolitical imagination of the sultans. The Ottoman aspiration to reunite the fragmented former territories of the Roman Empire once again brought the eastern Adriatic littoral within the orbit of a tri-continental empire, comprising the interconnected arena of the Balkans, Crimea, Anatolia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. It is important to pay particular attention to how sites can “travel” through texts, drawings, prints, objects, travelogues, and oral descriptions. To that list should be added “traveling” stones (spolia) and the subjective medium of memory, with its transformative powers, as vehicles for the transmission of architectural knowledge and visual culture. I refer to the memories of travelers, merchants, architects, and ambassadors who crossed borders, as well as to Ottoman pashas originating from Dalmatia and its hinterland, with their extraordinary mobility within the promotion system of a vast eastern Mediterranean empire. To these pashas, circulating from one provincial post to another was a prerequisite for eventually rising to the highest ranks of vizier and grand vizier at the Imperial Council in the capital Istanbul, also called Ḳosṭanṭiniyye (Constantinople).

The awards, started in 2004, are given for Life and Annual Achievement and for Contribution to the Life of Local Communities in the field of conservation. This is in memory of Vicko Andrić, 1793 – 1866, an architect and surveyor and the first Croatian conservator, responsible for preservation of many monuments in Croatia. The public at large, professionals and institutions, can nominate people who they think deserve such honours and I would like to express my thanks to those who proposed my name and to those who supported their proposition. Last autumn, I visited for the first time the Town Museum in SISAK, Roman SISCIA, a treasure trove of archaeological finds, from all periods, including Roman, who were settled there from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The Museum had recently employed a conservator and wanted to establish a conservation workshop, to be able to do at least some work at home, instead of sending to other workshops.

  • Holiday Homes Awayrooms, from Apartments, Home, Villas Quite Like Home
HOLIDAY HOMES AwayROOMS, from APARTMENTS, home, VILLAS quite like home Oft times, while daydreaming in my office, my thoughts drift off to Croatia. I escape from everyday drudgery and peacefully sail down Croatia’s rivers and wander through Slavonia’s limitless plains. I abandon myself to the sunset on Dalmatia’s pebble beaches, to Adriatic waters caressing island shores where pine forests meet the sea, and I submerge myself in its warm, blue embrace. I enjoy a stroll along the streets of Istria and Kvarner, where the bustle of the crowds is far from being an unwelcome imposition, but rather a siren song of the Mediterranean. Sometimes I walk through small villages, where time has stood still and people, even those unknown to each other, still greet one another as they pass by; through towns that have no more than a single store and where you need to order your bread and newspaper the day before. At times, I am intrigued by the magnetic attraction of the ancient towns, with large markets and fish vendors, their offerings transformed into delicious dishes by first-class chefs. Along with the rich variety of food, In this simplicity I search for the freedom afforded by various types of accommodation that are a wonderful wines, or just plain drinking water, I am discovering the formula for healthy part of my flight from reality. I see hotels that are perfect for holidays and also obvious choices for nutrition. Everything is so simple, and in this simplicity lies the secret to much deserved business conferences. Further on, I see small villas, pensions, apartments and private tranquillity and relaxation.

Thanks must first be given to my supervisor, Hugh Willmott, for allowing me this amazing research opportunity, and for putting up with my general lack of knowledge. Thanks must also be given to Phil McCluskey, who very kindly continued to support my research even after his time at Sheffield came to an end. Thanks also to the University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities for the scholarship which made this possible. Thank you to the many museums who granted me access to their collections: Muzej grada Trogira, especially Lujana Paraman; the Arheološka zbirka Osor – Lošinjski muzej, particularly Jasminka Ćus-Rukonić; Marina Lambasa, Emil Podrug, and the Muzej grada Šibenika; Radmila Biondić and Marina Kovač at the Muzej Slavonije; Igor Mihajlović at the Hrvatski restauratorski zavod; Dr Vesna Bikić at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade; and Ðivo Bašić at Pomorski Muzej, Dubrovački Muzeji. Thank you also to Ilir Parangoni for showing me some of the glass finds from Butrint, and to Nikolina Topić, Margherita Ferri, and Luka Bekić for sharing their research with me. Finally, thank you to my family and friends for supporting me through all of this.
