Holiday Homes Awayrooms, from Apartments, Home, Villas Quite Like Home HOLIDAY HOMES AwayROOMS, from APARTMENTS, home, VILLAS quite like home Oft times, while daydreaming in my office, my thoughts drift off to Croatia. I escape from everyday drudgery and peacefully sail down Croatia’s rivers and wander through Slavonia’s limitless plains. I abandon myself to the sunset on Dalmatia’s pebble beaches, to Adriatic waters caressing island shores where pine forests meet the sea, and I submerge myself in its warm, blue embrace. I enjoy a stroll along the streets of Istria and Kvarner, where the bustle of the crowds is far from being an unwelcome imposition, but rather a siren song of the Mediterranean. Sometimes I walk through small villages, where time has stood still and people, even those unknown to each other, still greet one another as they pass by; through towns that have no more than a single store and where you need to order your bread and newspaper the day before. At times, I am intrigued by the magnetic attraction of the ancient towns, with large markets and fish vendors, their offerings transformed into delicious dishes by first-class chefs. Along with the rich variety of food, In this simplicity I search for the freedom afforded by various types of accommodation that are a wonderful wines, or just plain drinking water, I am discovering the formula for healthy part of my flight from reality. I see hotels that are perfect for holidays and also obvious choices for nutrition. Everything is so simple, and in this simplicity lies the secret to much deserved business conferences. Further on, I see small villas, pensions, apartments and private tranquillity and relaxation. rooms. I see considerate, warm people full of imagination, whose life is so different and yet somehow strangely familiar to me. If my wanderings have piqued your interest, accompany me on a journey with the key to your villa, apartment or room, and enter the world that this brochure takes pleasure in introducing you to. Croatia 1 PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION IN CROATIA Croatia is an ideal country for a vacation, whether in villas, apartments or private rooms. In this journey you will be taken on a tour of the towns that we have chosen for you because of their attractiveness and the friendly people who have been great hosts to so many tourists, radiating a sincerity and directness that we want you to experience as well. Many tourists feel that the best way to learn about a country is to enter into its households and partake of the company of its hosts. In your room, apartment or villa you will have the freedom that you desire; freedom to entertain guests and the friends that you have met during your vacation, while being in the hub of activity of the town that you have chosen for your vacation. The shops are always nearby, so you can find food that you will be able to prepare in your apartment. Local cuisine is an essential part of the tourist offer. The food in restaurants is tasty and reasonably priced, just like the wares displayed in the shops and in the market stalls. In fact, the cost of this type of holiday will, in most cases, be less than that of hotel accommodation in the same town. The owners of houses for hire have built and furnished villas, apartments and rooms that offer a level of comfort able to meet the standards of even the most demanding guests, and where cleanliness is paramount. The hospitality received here provides answers to why the saying “a home away from home” is commonplace for this type of holiday in Croatia. VARIETY OF ACCOMMODATION From among the ten regions of Croatia, each with its own quite specific characteristics, find one that suits you best. This brochure provides you with general data regarding the opportunities offered by this type of holiday. More detailed information can be found on the web pages of the Tourist Boards of individual regions, or directly from agencies in the locations or regions which you select as your destination, a list of which can be found in the centre pages of this brochure. The brochure also contains an Croatia accommodation price list as a separate section. 2 ISTRIA 4-11 KVARNER 12-18 LIKA - KARLOVAC 19 DALMATIA - Zadar Region 20-25 CENTRAL CROATIA DALMATIA - Šibenik Region 26-29 SLAVONIA DALMATIA - Split Region 30-37 ZAGREB KVARNER ISTRIA DALMATIA - Dubrovnik Region 38-43 CENTRAL CROATIA 44-45 SLAVONIA 46-47 LIKA - KARLOVAC ZAGREB 48 DALMATIA - INFORMATION 49 ZADAR REGION DALMATIA - ŠIBENIK REGION DALMATIA - SPLIT REGION DALMATIA - DUBROVNIK REGION Croatia 2 3 Savudrija Umag Buje Buzet Novigrad Tar-Vabriga Poreč Pazin Funtana ISTRIA Vrsar Labin Rovinj Rabac Vodnjan The Adriatic’s largest peninsula, Fažana Pula your nearest Mediterranean coastline Medulin Distance from some European towns: From the wide variety of Istrian food, the following are particularly well home-made varieties of wine produced from white malmsey, red teran, Ljubljana 130 km, Venice 210 km, Vienna 510 km, Munich 550 km, worth a mention: “pršut”, otherwise known as prosciutto (smoked ham), “refošk” muscadine, and other kinds of grape. • Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland As Cultural Mediators
Chapter 10 Connectivity, Mobility, and Mediterranean “Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland as Cultural Mediators Gülru Necipoğlu Considering the mobility of persons and stones is one way to reflect upon how movable or portable seemingly stationary archaeological sites might be. Dalmatia, here viewed as a center of gravity between East and West, was cen- tral for the global vision of Ottoman imperial ambitions, which peaked during the 16th century. Constituting a fluid “border zone” caught between the fluctu- ating boundaries of three early modern empires—Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian Habsburg—the Dalmatian coast of today’s Croatia and its hinterland occupied a vital position in the geopolitical imagination of the sultans. The Ottoman aspiration to reunite the fragmented former territories of the Roman Empire once again brought the eastern Adriatic littoral within the orbit of a tri-continental empire, comprising the interconnected arena of the Balkans, Crimea, Anatolia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. It is important to pay particular attention to how sites can “travel” through texts, drawings, prints, objects, travelogues, and oral descriptions. To that list should be added “traveling” stones (spolia) and the subjective medium of memory, with its transformative powers, as vehicles for the transmission of architectural knowledge and visual culture. I refer to the memories of travelers, merchants, architects, and ambassadors who crossed borders, as well as to Ottoman pashas originating from Dalmatia and its hinterland, with their extraordinary mobility within the promotion system of a vast eastern Mediterranean empire. To these pashas, circulating from one provincial post to another was a prerequisite for eventually rising to the highest ranks of vizier and grand vizier at the Imperial Council in the capital Istanbul, also called Ḳosṭanṭiniyye (Constantinople).

  • The Krk Diocese
THE KRK DIOCESE THE ISLES SHALL WAIT FOR HIS TEACHINGS O I R E T S I IN M T I E N IO ORAT FOREWORD The centuries-long presence of Christianity on the islands of the Krk Diocese is deeply rooted in the life and culture of its population, which has been subject to a succession of various social orders during the course of history. Until the year 1828, there were three dioceses within this territory: Krk, Osor and Rab. The presence of a bishop and his relationship with the people had a strong impact upon spiritual formation and identity. The pas- tors of the small dioceses of the Kvarner Islands demonstrated magna- nimity and openness of spirit toward the beautiful and modern, while at the same time listening to the “pulse” of the people, incorporating their language in worship. The beauty of handwritten and illuminated Glagolitic missals, psalters and antiphonals greatly enriched the corpus of liturgical literature traditionally written in Latin. Christian culture, both spiritual and material, is reflected here in the arts of painting, architecture, literature, poetry and music. This is a Church distinguished by its priests and religious, especially the Benedictines and Franciscans, including those with the reputation of saintliness, who have played exceptional historical roles in the raising and fostering of national consciousness, enhancement of the quality of life, education in moral principles, and the creation and safeguarding of the cultural heritage. These values provided a firm foundation for assuring the survival of this nation under changing conditions, not infrequently im- posed by fire and sword.

The awards, started in 2004, are given for Life and Annual Achievement and for Contribution to the Life of Local Communities in the field of conservation. This is in memory of Vicko Andrić, 1793 – 1866, an architect and surveyor and the first Croatian conservator, responsible for preservation of many monuments in Croatia. The public at large, professionals and institutions, can nominate people who they think deserve such honours and I would like to express my thanks to those who proposed my name and to those who supported their proposition. Last autumn, I visited for the first time the Town Museum in SISAK, Roman SISCIA, a treasure trove of archaeological finds, from all periods, including Roman, who were settled there from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The Museum had recently employed a conservator and wanted to establish a conservation workshop, to be able to do at least some work at home, instead of sending to other workshops.
