The goal is to provide a deeper understanding of this rich image and its influence on the Gospel. In an attempt to do so, three areas of concentration are explored. First, the most common and accepted views of the background of the “Lamb of God” title in first century Judaism and Christianity are reviewed. -

In a footnote, marked (1), he gives reminiscences of this wise, very aged Piedmontese, and in a footnote to the footnote, cards 5-8 in the Etteilla tradition marked (a), he tells how he happened to meet the man. From this last footnote, it is clear where cards 9-12 in the Etteilla tradition Atteilla’s biographer got the idea that the Piedmontese’s name was Alexis and that Etteilla met cards 13-15 in the Etteilla tradition him in Lamballe. It is also clear that there was no confusion between this Alexis and the “Alexis Piémontois” of two centuries earlier, as Decker et al speculate, because Etteilla’s Alexis is said to cards 16-21 and 78 in the Etteilla tradition be the grandson (“petit fils”) of the earlier one. Since the earlier one lived 1520-1566, per Decker et al, the later one must have been "très-agé" indeed; well, presumably he had the "universal Etteilla on the cards as a whole I medicine," of which Etteilla says much, of a general nature, in the 2nd Cahier. -

GOD’S GREATEST SIN Rosh Hashanah Second Day October 1, 2019 2 Tishri 5780 Rabbi Jennifer R. Greenspan I have found, at least in my life, that we are often our own worst critics. We expect too much of ourselves, and we overuse the word “should,” trying desperately to reach some unattainable goal of perfection. I should be able to work a full-time job, maintain a clean home, cook and serve three healthy meals a day, and find at least an hour a day for exercise. I should be able to find time to meditate, go to bed earlier, get up earlier, still get eight hours of sleep, drink more water, and start a yoga routine. I should stop buying things I don’t need and be better about saving money. I should stop using disposable bottles, plastic straws, and eating anything that isn’t organic. I should come to synagogue more often. I should stop looking at my phone. I should use my phone to make sure I’m on top of my calendar. I should spend more time with my family. I should figure out how to be perfect already. How many of those “should”s that we constantly tell ourselves are really true to who we are, and how many come from a culture of perfectionism? When we are sitting in a season of judgement, how are we to judge ourselves and our deeds and our sins when we know we’re not perfect? The emergence of Permadeath games in recent months has exposed the mainstream gaming population to the concept of the permanent death of the game avatar, a notion that has been vehemently avoided by game developers in the past. The paper discusses the many incarnations of Permadeath that have been implemented since the dawn of video games, and uses examples to illustrate how gamers are crying out for games to challenge them in a unique way. The aims of this are to highlight the potential that Permadeath has in the gaming world to become a genre by itself, as well as to give insights into the ways in which gamers play Permadeath games at the present. To carry out this research, the paper examines the motivation players have to play games from a theoretical standpoint, and investigates how the possibilty of failure in video games should not be something gamers stay away from. -

(Jerusalem and New York: Devora Publishing, 2005) Reviewed by Raphael Jospe, Bar Ilan University Twice every year, on Rosh Ha-Shanah and on the Sabbath, a few weeks later, when Genesis 22 is read as part of the annual cycle of reading the Torah in the synagogue, Jews are confronted by the drama of the Akedah, Abraham’s “binding” of Isaac in an ultimately aborted attempt to offer his beloved son as a sacrifice to God. On many Sabbaths, and on festivals when the Yizkor (memorial) prayers are recited, Ashkenazi Jews have the custom of reciting the Av Ha-Rahamim, an anonymous prayer from the thirteenth century commemorating Jewish communities martyred in Germany during the first Crusade. Masada, where, after the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple, some 960 Jewish zealots and their families held off the Roman army and finally, facing the inevitable, committed mass suicide in 73 CE rather than surrender, is not merely a spectacular historical and archeological site; it has become a site of pilgrimage, where Israeli soldiers proclaim “Masada shall not fall again,” and where many youngsters celebrate their becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The common thread to these three Jewish practices is what Lippman Bodoff calls “religious murder.” To offer one’s child as a sacrifice to God is murder. To kill one’s family and then commit suicide, even under extreme circumstances, as Jewish husbands and fathers did at Masada, and then a thousand years later in the face of Crusader mobs in the Rhineland (1096), and again a century later in York, England, on the Sabbath before Passover, 1190, is, Bodoff argues passionately, murder, and a violation of the moral teachings of Judaism. -

From above, from below: navigating the videogame A thesis presented by Daniel Golding 228306 to The School of Culture and Communication in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in the field of Cultural Studies in the School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Supervisor: Dr. Fran Martin October 2008 ABSTRACT The study of videogames is still evolving. While many theorists have accurately described aspects of the medium, this thesis seeks to move the study of videogames away from previously formal approaches and towards a holistic method of engagement with the experience of playing videogames. Therefore, I propose that videogames are best conceptualised as navigable, spatial texts. This approach, based on Michel de Certeau’s concept of strategies and tactics, illuminates both the textual structure of videogames and the immediate experience of playing them. I also regard videogame space as paramount. My close analysis of Portal (Valve Corporation, 2007) demonstrates that a designer can choose to communicate rules and fiction, and attempt to influence the behaviour of players through strategies of space. 83 Rhythms in Rockaby: Ways of Approaching the Unknowable. Leonard H. Knight Describing Samuel Beckett's later, and progressively shorter, pieces in a word is peculiarly difficult. The length of the average critical commentary on them testifies to this, and is due largely to an unravelling of compression in the interests of meaning: straightening out a tightly C9iled spring in order to see how it is made. The analogy, while no more exact than any analogy, is useful at least in suggesting two things: the difficulty of the endeavour; and the feeling, while engaged in it, that it may be largely counterproductive. A straightened out spring, after all, is no longer a spring. Aware of the pitfalls I should nevertheless like, in this paper, to look at part of the mechanism while trying to keep its overall shape relatively intact. The ideas in a Beckett play emerge, in general, from an initial image. A woman half-buried in a grass mound. A faintly spotlit, endlessly talking mouth. Feet tracing a fixed, unvarying path. Concrete and intensely theatrical, the image is immediately graspable. Its force and effectiveness come, above all, from its simpl icity. Described in this way Beckett's images sound arresting to the point of sen sationalism. What effectively lowers the temperature while keeping the excitement generated by their o.riginality is the simple fact that they cannot easily be made out. They are seen, certainly - but only just. In the dimmest possible light; the absolute minimum commensurate with sight. What is initially seen is only then augmented or reinforced by what is said.
