Iceland have reason for optimism as they take on Turkey in their first UEFA EURO 2016 Group A game, having had the better of the nations' previous encounters. Match background • In seven games against Turkey, Iceland's record is W4 D2 L1 (W3 D1 L0 at home – W1 D1 L1 in Turkey). • The sides first met in 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Janus Gudlaugsson (12), Albert Gudmundsson (62) and Teitur Thordarsson (80) scored in a 3-1 win for Gudni Kjartansson's Iceland in Izmir on 24 September 1980, current coach (72) replying for 's Turkey. It was the second and final goal of Terim's 51-cap international career. • Lárus Gudmundsson (21) and Atli Edvaldsson (65) scored as Iceland won the return fixture 2-0 in Reykjavik on 9 September 1981. was Turkey coach. • The sides were matched again in 1990 World Cup qualifying. On 12 October 1988, Ünal Karaman (73) cancelled out Gudmundur Torfason's opener (62) in Istanbul as Tınaz Tırpan's side earned a 1-1 draw. Siggi Held's Iceland beat Turkey 2-1 in the return fixture on 20 September 1989, Pétur Pétursson (56 72) striking twice before Feyyaz Uçar (85) replied for Turkey. • On 17 July 1991 Iceland beat 's Turkey 5-1 in a friendly game in Reykjavik. Ünal Karaman (14) briefly levelled after Sigurdur Örn Gretarsson's second-minute opener, but four goals from Arnór Gudjohnsen (26, 40, 45, 64) – the father of Eidur Gudjohnsen – secured a comfortable win for Ásgeir Elíasson's side. • Turkey redressed the balance when the sides were paired in EURO '96 qualifying. On 12 October 1994 – with Terim in charge – Turkey beat Elíasson's Iceland 5-0 in Istanbul, Saffet Sancaklı (8, 26), Hakan Şükür (27 61) and Sergen Yalçın (65) the scorers, the latter registering his first international goal. The return fixture on 11 October 1995, the nations' most recent senior meeting, ended 0-0. • In eight meetings between the nations in UEFA age-group tournaments, Iceland's record is W1 D1 L6. • The only three UEFA club competition games between Icelandic and Turkish clubs have ended in Turkish victories – the winning side scoring three goals in each game.

5 Iceland - Turkey Tuesday 9 September 2014 - 20.45CET (18.45 local time) Match press kit Laugardalsvöllur, Reykjavik Head coach Lars Lagerbäck/Heimir Hallgrímsson Lagerbäck Date of birth: 16 July 1948 Nationality: Swedish Playing career: Alby FF, Gimonäs CK Coaching career: Kilafors IF, Arbrå BK, Hudiksvalls ABK, Sweden (youth sides), Sweden, Nigeria, Iceland • A lower-league player, Lagerbäck began his coaching career in 1977 with Kilafors, joining the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) as a youth coach after spells with two other modest club sides Arbrå and Hudiksvall. • Coached the national Under-21 and B teams until Tommy Söderberg took him on as his assistant with the senior national squad in 1998. • Söderberg and Lagerbäck managed Sweden in tandem from 2000, reaching UEFA EURO 2000, the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2004; following Söderberg's departure, Lagerbäck took the troops to the 2006 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008 single-handed. • Stepped down after failing to lead Sweden to the 2010 World Cup finals, but ended up travelling to that tournament as coach of Nigeria. • Appointed Iceland boss in October 2011, he steered the side to the 2014 World Cup play-offs where they lost to Croatia. Agreed a new contract that will see him hand over the reins to assistant Heimir Hallgrímsson at the end of the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign. Hallgrímsson Date of birth: 10 June 1967 Nationality: Icelandic • Formerly Lagerbäck's assistant, Hallgrímsson was promoted to the joint coaching role following the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Hallgrímsson, who coached ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar between 2006 and 2011, will take sole charge after Iceland's UEFA EURO 2016 campaign. Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (three times), Galatasaray AŞ (three times), ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan • A central defender, Terim represented Galatasaray for over a decade and played 51 games for Turkey, 32 as captain. Began his coaching career with Ankaragücü and Göztepe, before being named assistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the U21s in 1990. • Appointed Turkey coach in 1993, Terim led them to EURO '96. They lost all their matches in England, but just getting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark. • Returned to Galatasaray after the EURO, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling and Terim took the helm at Fiorentina and Milan before rejoining Galatasaray; however, a run of disappointing results brought about a temporary retirement in 2004. • Reappointed Turkey coach in 2005, Terim – known as 'İmparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – could not guide them through a 2006 World Cup play-off against Switzerland. Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008 with Terim steering Turkey to the semi-finals but he resigned following unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 World Cup. • Back for a third spell as Galatasaray boss in July 2011, in his first season he inspired Cimbom to their first Süper Lig crown in four years. Repeated the feat in 2013 when also helping Galatasaray to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Named head of the national team for a third time – on a part-time basis – in August 2013, he parted company with Galatasaray in September to assume the role full time. Was unable to lead Turkey to the 2014 World Cup despite winning three of his four qualifiers in charge.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
