The Rise of Late-Stage Funding for European Technology Scale-Ups
Blooming Late: The rise of late-stage funding for European technology scale-ups NOVEMBER 2019 Introduction Europe’s technology industry continues to grow up. Across the EU, Israel, Russia and Turkey, startup ecosystems are flourishing, expanding and - in a few places - maturing into veritable world-class hotbeds for innovation. Evidently, challenges remain and Europe will have to overcome many of them to even have a chance of staying competitive in an ever-evolving world - and with haste to boot. To continue scaling up and accelerate the maturation process of its key tech hubs, Europe has to play to its strengths and eliminate some of its inherent weaknesses to mitigate the risk of getting left behind. Two of these weaknesses have historically been the lack of major exits and late-stage financing rounds (€100 million and more) for Europe’s fastest-growing tech businesses as catalysts for growth. As we’ve detailed in previous reports on the influx of capital for Europe’s finest tech startups, there has been a tremendous increase in investment volume for early-stage and growth-stage companies in recent years, with no signs of a slowdown so far. Numbers only tell part of a story, but the rise in seed and growth capital (Series A-B-C) flowing to European tech businesses across the region paints a picture of a healthy collection of ecosystems with potential for further growth. But when it comes to really big rounds of financing, Europe hasn’t really seen many of those to date, certainly not in comparison to the US and, increasingly, China. -
The Use of Helicopters Against Guerrillas the Israeli Model
JEMEAA - FEATURE The Use of Helicopters against Guerrillas The Israeli Model DR. TAL TOVY ince its establishment, the State of Israel has been facing a bloody struggle against terrorism and guerrilla warfare, in addition to four conventional wars.1 The Israeli war against guerrilla fighters or terrorists began almost Simmediately after the War of Independence. Palestinian terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel from the surrounding Arab countries and perform sabotage ac- tions near the border, which were little more than lines drawn on a map and proved wholly inadequate in stopping the infiltrations. After the 1967 war, most terrorists crossed over from Jordan. Following the “Black September” conflict in 1970 and up until 1982 (Operation Peace for Galilee), most terrorists infiltrated through the Lebanese border. In the 1980s and 1990s, Israel fought against the Shiite Amal Movement and Hezbollah organization in Lebanon. Since October 2000, Israel has struggled against widespread military uprisings in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. To counter these activities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uses various opera- tional methods. Special Forces have raided known terrorist bases and routine se- curity activities have been conducted along the borders and in the major cities. A third method has been targeting specific terrorist leaders or installations in the Middle East and in Europe. Most operations of the first and third categories are still classified. The IDF has launched a few large attacks targeting terrorist infra- structure—for example Karameh and Litany—with the most extensive one being the Lebanon War (1982), at least initially. In these large-scale operations, Israel has deployed massive infantry, armor, and artillery forces. -

The Holidays of the Revolution Myth, Ritual and Identity Among Tel Aviv Communists, 1919-1965
The Holidays of the Revolution Myth, Ritual and Identity among Tel Aviv Communists, 1919-1965 by Amir Locker-Biletzki A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of PhD in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Amir Locker-Biletzki, March, 2013 ABSTRACT THE HOLIDAYS OF THE REVOLUTION MYTH, RITUAL AND IDENTITY IN AMONG TEL AVIV COMMUNISTS, 1919-1965 Amir Locker-Biletzki Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Alan McDougall The Israeli Communist Party (MKI) and its precursor, the Communist Party of Palestine (PKP), were a unique Arab-Jewish organization. Marginalized and persecuted for most of its formative years, the Communist Party developed, from 1919 to 1965, its own distinctive subculture. Negating and absorbing the Zionist-Socialist and Israeli statist cultures, influenced by both Soviet and left wing European traditions as well as Jewish traditional elements, the Jewish Communists developed their own cycle of holidays. Through the examination of primary sources, ranging from internal Communist documents and newspaper articles to photographs and posters, as well as interviews with contemporaries and comparison with parallel Communist experiences in the United States and in the Arab world – this thesis examines the myths and rituals reflected in the holidays, as practiced by the Jewish Communists in MKI and the Israeli Young Communist League (Banki). The thesis scrutinizes the identity these cultural practices produced. By examining the Jewish holidays, the Israeli civic holidays, May Day, the Soviet November 7th and May 9th holidays, and the rituals concerning the relations between Palestinians and Jews, it is shown that between the years 1919 and 1965 the Jewish Communists created a local, Jewish-Israeli, anti-Zionist patriotic identity. -
