Recycling in Schools Page 1 of 11 Report to: ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES SCRUTINY COMMITTEE Date: 10th October 2007 Report of: Director of Environmental Services Report No: ESSC/08/07 Contact Officer: Daniela Wesenberg Tele No: 33 8382 Report Title: Recycling in Schools Non Confidential: (Non-Confidential) This report does not contain information which warrants its consideration in the absence of the press or members of the public Purpose: This report provides detailed information on Bolton Councils Recycling in Schools Recommendations: The implementation of Recycling in Schools is carried forward so that all schools receive recycling facilities of glass, cans, plastic bottles and paper and card. Decision: Background Doc(s): Page 1 of 11 1. Introduction This report provides detailed information on Bolton Councils Recycling in Schools 2. Background Since September 2006 many schools with a commercial waste contract have been visited across Bolton and been provided with collections of glass, cans and plastic bottles and also given advice on other items that can be recycled at schools such as paper, composting, mobile phones and textiles. Schools are also encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle as much of there waste as possible. Schools are also advised of the Eco- schools programme. Once recycling containers are implemented into the school, this is then followed with a recycling talk to the school assembly/ies and also where requested talks to individual classes. The school talk, involves interaction with the children such as “What happen to your rubbish?” both at home and in school and what rubbish can be recycled into. K9 the recycling Dog is then introduced and the children help K9 sort out his rubbish into what can be recycled. 3. Performance Information Recycling in School has been very popular and to date schools have contacted the Recycling officers for recycling. Since starting Recycling in Schools in September 2006, 53 schools are now recycling glass, cans, plastic bottles and paper (Table 1) and 37 assemblies have been attended. Eco schools have also increased from 8 to 44 schools. 3 schools have also gained there Green flag. Even though schools are recycling, the tonnage collected is having little impact on the overall recycling rate (Table 2). All schools have now been broken down into wards, to see which schools are recycling and in which wards need to be targeted.
