Re: Toronto Developer

Fact: In Spring 2006 Toronto Developer tock steps to build a five story 92·unlt condominium on a site on the north stde of Old lake Road on lake Ontario and known locally as the Old Club Lakewood Property In the Town of Porter and adjacent to Fort Niagara State Par1t.

Fact: The proposal was from Jedidiah, Inc. and led by developer Paul Oulahen.

Fact: At that.time, I was the President of Residents for Responsible Government, Inc. fighting Chemical Waste Management's application for relicenslrag of RMU·l and application for a new toxic landfill RMU-2.

Fact: While I attended a meeting in the Town of Porter Town Hall I was approached by the developer of the site and asked about RRG and resident concerns. We arranged to speak, by phone, a few days later.

Fact: During that conversation I spoke about the Town of Porter hosting the only commercial toxic waste landfill Jn the entire northeast of the United States and that CWM accepted wastes from 30 states, canada, and Puerto Rico. I advised him that residents were concerned about the cancer rates reported by the State health Department. I told him that while we have tried everything to stop the new landfill. I was scared to death that the State would soon grant a permit for a new toxic landfill on CWM's propertv located .9 miles from Lewiston Central School buildings.

Fact: The developer thanked me for letting him know of the Issues being faced In the Youngstown area. He also told me that he was going to walk away from developing the Lakewood propertv. He did not want to invest in any area that had such problems because the negative publicity of CWM being granted a permtt for a new toxic landfill would negatively affect the values of his project and the values of the proposed condominiums.

Fact: To my knowledge, the developer did not proceed any further on this development project.

Outreach and Extension Focus As part of my outreach activities, I am involved in working with extension staff at Cornell in developing guidelines and publications on the management of toxic metals that may he found al elevated concentrations in some farm and garden soils. Practical methods of remediating contaminated soils are being investigated, and recommendations are being conveyed to growers based on these findings.NYSDEC Impro OHMSved methods Document of testing No. contaminated 201469232-00113 soils for toxic metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium, arsenic and copper, and interpreting these tests, is also a focus of my outreach effort. The goal is to provide fanners and gardeners \\ith science-based information to minimize their exposure to toxic metals and other contaminants in soils as weJI as impro-.·e crop quality.

Teaching Focus My teaching attempts to ex11lain to students the chemical processes that go on the complex emironment of soils b}' using simple ph~·sical chemical principles. l teach an undergraduate course in Em~ronmenta l Chemistry, which CO\'ers important environmental topics in soils, the atmosphere, and the hydrosphere. This course uses case studies of poll ution in the biosphere and considers the potential effects on soil, plant, animal and human health. Because new environmental issues nre emerging every year as more is learned, lectures evolve in response to this dynamic situation. I also teach an advanced soil chemistry course, intended primarily for graduate students with a strong background in ph}'Sical chemistry.

This course CO\'ers the basic chemist I)' of clay mineralogy, soil organic matter, soil acidity, cation exchange, chemisorption of metal cations and oxyanions, redox processes and soil salinity.
