  • Crowdfunding and Independent Screen Content Production in Australia
Crowdfunding and Independent Screen Content Production in Australia A direct economic relationship between producer and audience Rebecca Laycock B.A.Com. and BMedia (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) School of Media, Entertainment and Creative Arts Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2015 Keywords Crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, digital distribution, film finance, government funding, independent film, screen content, Screen Australia 2 Abstract Crowdfunding is a new form of film finance that emerged in Australia in 2010 and is being used by independent screen content producers to raise finance for short film, documentary, television program, short animation and even feature-length production. This trend is seeing Australian independent content producers bypass traditional sources of finance by working with a model for finance that is outside, or perhaps alongside, traditional forms of film financing in Australia. In some cases, filmmakers are no longer solely waiting for government funding to green-light a project, they are initiating funds prior, during and after production to guarantee their film is produced. Independent screen content producers are also establishing a direct economic relationship between producer and audience and in so doing are simultaneously establishing a niche audience for their content. Crowdfunding is to an extent becoming a necessity, especially within a decreased national funding arts environment. However, to date there has been limited in-depth academic analysis of crowdfunding as a source of production finance for independent Australian screen content production, particularly in terms of government action, industry trends, and what areas of the broader screen industry are receiving crowdfunding.

Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. 2 Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. ABSTRACT. Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. An interpretative methodology for understanding meaning in cinema since the 1950s, auteur analysis is an approach to film studies in which an individual, usually the director, is studied as the author of her or his films. The principal argument of this thesis is that proponents of auteurism have privileged examination of the visual components in a film-maker’s body of work, neglecting the potentially significant role played by sound. The thesis seeks to address this problematic imbalance by interrogating the creative use of sound in the films written and directed by Rolf de Heer, asking the question, “Does his use of sound make Rolf de Heer an aural auteur?” In so far as the term ‘aural’ encompasses everything in the film that is heard by the audience, the analysis seeks to discover if de Heer has, as Peter Wollen suggests of the auteur and her or his directing of the visual components (1968, 1972 and 1998), unconsciously left a detectable aural signature on his films.

Panavision in depth Toby Oliver ACS: ‘Beneath Hill 60’ Toby Oliver ACS is another of Australia’s stellar DOPs with impressive credits to his name. His experience covers all genres of commercials, short films, music videos, documentaries and features. Recently, he shot the World War I movie, ‘Beneath Hill 60’ (Dir: Jeremy Sims, script, David Roach) which opened on April 15 to critical acclaim from reviewers and audiences, who see it as an indication that Australia’s film industry is undergoing a very healthy year of releases. ‘Beneath Hill 60’ is a story of bravery that has been eclipsed by Gallipoli, but is just as fascinating and praiseworthy. The plot revolves around the army tunnelers, miners who created a maze of narrow, dark, underground tunnels, laying explosives which were later detonated in a massive blast to destroy enemy positions. The film was inspired by the record of the time left behind by charismatic soldier, Captain Oliver Woodward, winner of the Military Cross and Two Bars for his bravery and maverick daring. Filming was entirely based in Townsville which has not been, until now, considered a movie location. What was so special about that city for this film? Townsville was where the story of ‘Beneath Hill 60’ all began – Captain Oliver Woodward was from the area and our EP, Ross Thomas, had found his ‘lost’ diaries that became the basis of the true story, in a dumpster in nearby Charters Towers. Local Townsville identities and businesses were investors in the film providing cash, filming locations, earthmoving machinery and lots of support.
