Dear friends

Thank you to all who prepared our church buildings for Easter, cleaning and decorating them. All five looked fantastic for our Easter services. It was great to see so many of you on Easter day as we came to celebrate the fact that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and to think about what that means for each of us. We were reminded of the love and forgiveness that God is able to offer us because Christ paid the price for the wrong we each do.

Half way through last month we celebrated St George's Day. The story of George and the dragon is wonderful and inspiring. In paintings depicting the story we normally see St George with the red cross emblazoned across his shield, reminding us of the cross of Christ and the level of love and service that we are called to.

As St George confronts and slays the dragon, we are inspired in our love and service of God to confront the dragons in today's world. For us, dragons come in various guises - people that perhaps we need to gently confront or perhaps issues of social justice. On our own we can't slay the dragons of hunger, poverty or violence but together in God we can contribute towards the battle against these modern dragons.

As we reflect on this, may God inspire us to further action and service for Him.

Wishing you Christ's peace,

Andy

Revd Andy Larkin

PS. I'm sure you will all join me in welcoming Dennis Stone as our new Warden at Fenny Bentley.

The 'Big Thank You' project is giving people an opportunity to add personal well wishes to Her Majesty the Queen to special 'thank you' letters being displayed in many cathedrals and churches around the country. Containing an introductory paragraph by diocesan bishops, the letters give the public a chance to say a few words in appreciation of 60 years of loyal service. Each of our parish churches will have a letter displayed between the 1st of June and the 24th June and all parishioners are very welcome to add their signatures and messages. Once compiled into one Big Thank You letter later in the year, the letters will be delivered to Buckingham Palace.

Copy Deadline for June Magazine: 25th May, 2012 Articles can be submitted via email to Revd Andy Larkin: [email protected]

A big thank you to John Bennett for providing the church with enough candles to see us through another few years. Thank you John

Revd Andy Larkin ______

By now every resident of Fenny Bentley will have received, and should have replied (by April 21) to their invitation for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. If you have not yet done so please let Sheila Haswell have your reply slip as soon as possible as we can only cater for the numbers received. This is a great opportunity for us to get together, have fun and celebrate the Queen’s amazing 60 years as our monarch.

An enjoyable Easter service was well supported, followed by the annual Easter Egg Hunt & Egg & Spoon Race. There was some great decorating of Easter hats with prizes donated by the Fenny Bentley Initiative. Tea, Coffee & homemade cakes were served. Many thanks to all who supported the day and particular thanks to all those people who decorated the Church so beautifully for Easter.

COFFEE MORNINGS

On Wednesday, April 18th we were treated to another visit and an interesting talk by Rob and Angi Jackson on behalf of Guide Dogs. They are both guide dog trainers and brought with them Quincey, a beautiful trainee guide dog. They have had Quincey, who is a cross between a collie and retriever, for twelve months. They gave us an insight into all that is involved in training a dog such as Quincey and demonstrated a few of the commands with him. They also showed us photographs of previous dogs they had trained to become successful guide dogs for blind or partially sighted people.

Quincey will be going to Leamington Guide Dogs facility shortly to start his advanced training. This involves working closely with a trainer and getting him used to wearing a harness, but more importantly furthering his training to teach him to guide. This can take 6-8 months depending upon his progress and confidence levels. Towards the end of this time his trainer will post his details on a matching website where Guide Dog Mobility instructors look to find dogs for clients who need a new guide dog – taking account of height, speed of walk, rural or urban living, busy or relaxed day to day living etc. Through a process of suitability the best match on paper is sought and then the prospective owner and dog have a 2 week training period called ‘going on class’ where they live together in a supervised situation away from home to intensively work together to see if the pairing is likely to work successfully. They can then return home and be said to have qualified. A supervisory watch is kept on them for the first 6 months to, hopefully, iron out any niggles. This will be Quincey’s period of ‘university education’ and Rob and Angi hope that early next year they will hear he has qualified.

Rob and Angi hope to come back and see us in the autumn with their latest guide dog to be trained. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, a cheque has been sent to them in aid of Guide Dogs for £60.00.

A letter of sincere thanks has been received from WaterAid for our support and gift of £55.00. They wrote: ‘It will make a real difference to some of the poorest people in the world. Access to safe water and sanitation allow people to enjoy the benefits that better health brings. These benefits include an opportunity to go to school, to start a business or to grow crops. These are the first steps that allow people to make their way out of poverty’.

Future Dates: May 23rd, June 20th and July 18th, all Wednesdays as usual in the Village Hall between 10.30 am and 12 noon. The charity to benefit from donations on May 23rd will be Christian Aid. RH

In April Doctor Carolyn Keeling and her daughter Rebekah will give a film show and talk on Nepal and the trip they took there as Aid Workers where they practised their medicine in a surgical camp and performed many operations on lady patients.

TISSINGTON VILLAGE HALL

We’re almost there! The new heating system is in and working – but the control has packed up and we are waiting for a new one. At present we can set the heating manually before each booking.

Everyone likes the new interior doors so much that we are now changing the swing doors into the main hall to match! Then all we need is the outside doors painted – and a grant to get insulation for the roof, otherwise all the central heating will be useless.

Hopefully all will be done by Well Dressing.
