Title Impact Assessment of Sustainable Management of the Papaya Mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), In Small Scale Papaya Production System In Mozambique PI Domingos R. Cugala

Faculty of Agronomy and Forest Engineering Eduardo Mondlane University Av. Julius Nyerere Main University Campus, Building No 1 Maputo, Mozambique Email: [email protected] and [email protected] Cell phone: +258 823148430 Co- Luisa Santos and Amélia Sidumo Researchers Purpose Training two MSc students and at the same time, contribute for the sustainable management of the papaya mealybug in the country Project The papaya mealybug,Paracoccus marginatus, is a serious pest of papaya. P. marginatus Summary native to Mexico and Central America is a devastating pest of papaya production in the areas of invasion in Asia, Africa and North America. In Mozambique, the papaya mealybug was detected for the first time in 2013 in Pemba, Cabo Delgado province. Classical biological control has been viewed as a potential friendly management strategy for P. marginatus, in the country due to its status as an introduced species and it is suitable for the classical biological control approach of releasing species-specific parasitoids such as Acerophagus cf. nubilipennis, Acerophagus papayae. The present project proposal will evaluate P. marginatus distribution and pest status; levels of infestation and damage due to this pest; conduct assessment of establishment and preliminary of classical biological control using the exotic parasitoids. Two MSc. students will be involved in conducting research work. Each student will conduct field and laboratory studies. Country and Mozambique, the project implementing site will be mainly Cabo Delgado Province, surveys Specific on the distribution will be conducted at the main entry points or areas including airports, Location(s) sea ports, land boarder and the main papaya production areas within the country. Participating Apart from the Faculty of Agronomy and Forest Engineering, the Ministry of Agriculture and Institutions CIRAD from La Reunion, France will be involved Start Date 1st November 2014 End Date 31st October 2016 Amount of US$64,999 Funding

Domingos R. Cugala (PhD) Domingos Cugala was born in Chemba, Sofala Province, Mozambique. He is an alumni of Eduardo Mondlane University, University of Zimbabwe, Kenyatta University, ICIPE and RUFORUM with academic training in Crop Protection (Entomology, Biological control of invasive species). Due to the research conducted under RUFORUM funded MSc program, Dr. Cugala was able to the group of scientists working on biological control of insect pests. This facilitated his selection for a doctoral research fellowship under the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS) based at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE). Dr. Cugala is now a senior lecturer and researcher at the Department of Crop Protection, Faculty of Agronomy and Forest Engineering, Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo. He has expertise in agricultural entomology, agricultural pest management, biological control, research methods and insect ecology, and pest risk assessment and management. Dr. Cugala has engaged in research and development in agricultural pest management focusing on sustainable management of invasive insect species, having participated in more than 16 national, regional and international research projects where he acted as coordinator and/or country coordinator. He has widely contributed to the body of science and knowledge with over 30 scientific papers published on scientific journals as well on conference proceedings and several scientific reports. Further, Dr. Cugala has demonstrated scientific acumen with delivery of solutions to farmers as he participated in the research that rescued banana from Africa that had been banned by several importing countries due to the presence of an invasive Asian fruit fly, Bactrocera (=invadens) dorsalis. This research and interventions thereafter allowed farmers in Africa and Mozambique in particular to export their produce to lucrative markets in Europe, the Middle East and South Africa. These efforts led to his recognition with the 2012 José Rodrigues Pereira prize award for being the best lecturer and researcher on the Sciences of Earth and Environment held in Mozambique. He also received the 2012 best poster presentation award at the second International Meeting of Tephritid Workers of Europe, Africa and the Middle East held in Greece.
