FLANERY ABSTRACT Midcentury American life featured a post-war economy that established a middle class in which disposable income and time for leisure were commonplace. In this socio-economic environment, consumerism flourished, ushering in the Golden Age of the automobile: from 1950 to 1960, Americans spent more time in their automobiles than ever before, and, by the end of the decade, the number of cars on the road had more than doubled. While much critical attention has been given to the role of the automobile in American novels, less has been given to its role in American short stories. -

Press Release 6 September 2020 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2020, Portrait Overall Winner Larry ten Voorde: The fly-fishing Dutchman Stuttgart. Larry ten Voorde has had precious little time for hobbies lately. “Eight races within ten weeks – my fishing gear has probably gathered dust by now,” laughs the overall winner of the 2020 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. While racing drivers often seek an adrenaline rush in their spare time, the 23-year-old Dutchman takes a different tack. “Fly-fishing helps me relax completely and recharge my inner battery.” His strategy obviously works. Notching up three wins from eight races, Ten Voorde was the dominant driver of the 2020 season. “What an incredible year. My GP Elite team was new to the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. I wouldn’t have thought it possible to win the title off the bat,” says Ten Voorde, as he looks back on the shortest season in the history of the international one-make cup with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup run over just ten weeks. “Initially we had to learn the hard way, but we put in the effort and improved from race to race.” As the team captain, Ten Voorde played a major role in improving the squad’s performance. On the racetrack, the fastest member of the 2,500-strong community of Boekelo close to Enschede shows no signs of angler serenity: “Larry has an incredible will to win. His entire life revolves around winning the next race,” explains team boss Torsten van Haasteren. Although the Dutch squad GP Elite is new to the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, it promptly clinched the overall trophy with Ten Voorde. -

The Opel Association of North America The Official Newsletter of the OANA Vol.8 No. 2 – Mar/Apr 2000 The History of the Opel Bitter OANA CLUB INFORMATION The Opel Association of North America has been in existence as a local club since 1985. From 1994 to 1996 the club saw many transformations, and the O.A.N.A. settled into its current form in 1996. Our purpose now is to provide a source for locating parts, service, tech-help and various forums to exchange information between owners of all Opel models from the 1957 Olympia to any gray market imports that are in North America. We do, however, place a special emphasis on the Opel GT, Manta and Kadett models. Our ultimate goal is to keep the Opel marquee a presence in North America, improve the collectability of all Opels in North America, and most of all, to have fun doing it. The North American Bitter Registry was formed for essentially the same reasons as The Opel Association. A very small number of Bitters (our sister make) SC coupes were imported into the U.S. With the non-existence of any club to help the owners of these rare and exotic cars, it was determined that our club would be the right place to give assistance and help these owners have a place to get connected. · Club membership dues: Net-Only Membership (Members do not get a mailed newsletter; they download it from the net) is $20 for 2 years. Business members are $100 a year (includes business card in newsletter and banner on front page of web site), $50 per ad page per issue. -

Press Release March 8, 2019 Preview, World Endurance Championship WEC, round 6 in Sebring/USA Porsche aims for victory at the FIA WEC’s return to Sebring Stuttgart. Porsche tackles the first Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC race at Sebring since 2012 as the points’ leader. After five of the season’s eight rounds, the works team with its two ca. 510 hp Porsche 911 RSR ranks first in the manufactur- ers’, drivers’ and team categories. Three customer squads field four other identical vehicle models in the GTE-Am category. With the WEC held as a joint event alongside the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship from March 13-16, a total of eight Porsche 911 RSR vehicles will be competing on the legendary Sebring circuit. The race Sebring has hosted the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC only once since the launch of the series. In 2012, works drivers Marc Lieb (Germany), Richard Lietz (Austria) and Patrick Pilet (France) finished in second place. In the long history of endurance racing at Sebring, Porsche is by far the most successful manufacturer, with a total of 18 overall victories going to the marque from Weissach. The most recent victory was in 2008 thanks to Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas (France) and Emmanuel Collard (France) at the wheel of a Porsche RS Spyder. The Porsche GT Team drivers Richard Lietz (Austria) and Gianmaria Bruni (Italy) tackle the 1,000-mile race (or eight hours) with the No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR car. The pair achieved second place at the Shanghai round of the 2018/2019 Super Season. -

Press Release 8 April 2021 Porsche announces cockpit line-up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 8 Hours of Portimão With the experience of 59 Le Mans participations to the highlight of the year Stuttgart. Porsche has secured the support of two endurance aces for the two FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) races in Portimão and Le Mans. In the ca. 515 hp Porsche 911 RSR (#91), Frédéric Makowiecki reinforces the regular WEC drivers Gianmaria Bruni from Italy and Richard Lietz from Austria. The Frenchman has been part of the driver line-up to tackle the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the last three years. In the No. 92 car, Neel Jani from Switzerland and the Frenchman Kévin Estre receive reinforcement from Michael Christensen. The Dane won the GTE-Pro class at Le Mans in 2018 with Estre and Belgium’s Laurens Vanthoor. The experienced trio will also contest round two of the season in Portugal on 13 June. “Between them, these six nominated drivers have a total of 59 Le Mans races under their belts. This experience is invaluable,” explains Pascal Zurlinden, Director Factory Motorsport. Neel Jani won the overall classification of the 24-hour French classic in 2016 at the wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid – with Romain Dumas (France) and Marc Lieb (Germany). His five teammates have harvested eight class victories so far with the 911 RSR at the tradition-steeped endurance race at the Sarthe. “There’s absolutely no doubt that we’ll be very well-positioned for the highlight of the year. -

Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Press Release July 24, 2016 No. M 149/16 World Endurance Championship WEC, round 4 at the Nürburgring/Germany – Race GT First podium for the Porsche customer team KCMG Stuttgart. Premiere for KCMG: The Porsche customer team from Hong Kong has secured its first podium result with the Porsche 911 RSR in the Sports Car World En- durance Championship WEC at Sunday’s six-hour race on the Nürburgring. In front of 58,000 spectators, Wolf Henzler (Germany), Christian Ried (Germany) and Joel Camathias (Switzerland) finished second in the GTE-Am class after a strong drive in the 470 hp race car, which is based on the seventh generation of the iconic 911 sports car. After making a good start from pole position, the 911 RSR fielded by Abu Dhabi Pro- ton Racing initially took the lead on the Eifel circuit. Patrick Long (USA) defended the top spot in the GTE-Am class over the first hour of racing. While handing the car off to David Heinemeier Hansson (Denmark), a fire started in the pits. This cost the lead. At the beginning of the fifth racing hour, Khaled Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi) had to pit af- ter a collision with an LMP1 prototype, dashing the hopes of the third place-getters at the Le Mans 24 Hours for a second podium spot this season. The team ultimately had to settle for fifth ahead of Gulf Racing’s 911 RSR. Norway’s Dennis Olsen and Australian Matt Campbell will be supported in the future as Porsche Young Professionals in international GT racing. The Porsche Young Professionals squad also includes Matteo Cairoli from Italy and Frenchman Mathieu Jaminet. Thomas Preining from Austria makes the step up from the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland to the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, where he will be supported as a Porsche Junior. Porsche Motorsport will also support Julien Andlauer as a new Porsche Junior. The Frenchman came through an international trial and will also race in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in 2018. “All our young racing drivers have developed superbly in 2017. The one-make cups, in particular, have proven to be an outstanding springboard for the Porsche Juniors,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars. Dennis Olsen Page 1 of 5 Olsen won the title in the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. The 21-year-old from the Konrad Motorsport team demonstrated a particularly impressive level of consistency. As well as six race wins, the young driver from Våler in Norway also finished on the podium in 12 of the season’s 14 races. Olsen also demonstrated his talent in the international Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, in which he drove for the Walter Lechner Racing Team. The youngster was victorious at the iconic British circuit in Silverstone, as well as the double-header at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium). He ended the season second in the championship and was crowned top rookie.
