Vision Residency VISION RESIDENCY HEALING SOUNDBOXES: A SERIES OF AQUIFERS APRIL 5 - 26 @ 7PM ET Created & Performed by STARR BUSBY & JAMES ALLISTER SPRANG Curated by Vision Resident STARR BUSBY HEALING SOUNDBOXES: A SERIES OF AQUIFERS APRIL 5 - 26 @ 7PM ET THE TEAM Created & Performed by STARR BUSBY & JAMES ALLISTER SPRANG Curated by Vision Resident STARR BUSBY Mix & Master BRENDAN MCGEEHAN Ars Nova operates on the unceded land of the Lenape peoples on the island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) in Lenapehoking, the Lenape Homeland. We acknowledge the brutal history of this stolen land and the displacement and dispossession of its Indigenous people. We also acknowledge that after there were stolen lands, there were stolen people. We honor the generations of displaced and enslaved people that built, and continue to build, the country that we occupy today. We gathered together in virtual space to watch this performance. We encourage you to consider the legacies of colonization embedded within the technology and structures we use and to acknowledge its disproportionate impact on communities of color and Indigenous peoples worldwide. We invite you to join us in acknowledging all of this as well as our shared responsibility: to consider our way forward in reconciliation, decolonization, anti-racism and allyship. We commit ourselves to the daily practice of pursuing this work. ABOUT THE ARTISTS JAMES ALLISTER SPRANG’s work exists in gallery spaces, theater spaces and the space generally found between the ears. He tells stories informed by black radical and experimental traditions. For the past fifteen years, James has sustained a multidisciplinary practice with the understanding that storytelling is at the foundation of all disciplines. Sprang has built relationships with communities and audiences across experimental theater, sound art, photography, performance art, poetry and spoken word. Sprang's multidisciplinary practice cuts through segregated stories, timelines, archives and imaginations. Sprang has completed several residencies both domestically and internationally. He has also shown/performed at institutions such as The Public Theater, Baryshnikov Art Center, Vox Populi, Abrons Arts Center, The Apollo Theater, The Brooklyn Museum, Knockdown Center, Pioneer Works, Painted Bride Art Center and The Kitchen. STARR BUSBY (Vision Resident) is an experimental artist who sings, acts, composes, educates and is dedicated to the liberation of All people. You may have seen Starr playing solo shows with their loop station, Francis, or fronting Brooklyn-based experimental soul band People’s Champs (peopleschamps.com). Starr has also supported artists such as The Gorillaz, Esperanza Spalding, X Ambassadors, Kimbra and Alice Smith. Selected appearances include: Moby Dick (American Repertory Theatre; Starbuck); Octet (Signature Theatre; Paula – Drama Desk Award Winner); where love lies fallow (The Shed; Nia 1); Apollo Cafe Live: Soul Cypher; #BlackGirlMagic Show (Jack; composer/performer); Mikrokosmos (Steirischer Herbst, Graz and Nottingham Contemporary); The Girl with the Incredible Feeling (Spoleto Festival di Mondi) as well as various concerts. ABOUT THE VISION RESIDENCY Designed to foreground Ars Nova’s values through the creation of more equitable and power-sharing curatorial practices, the Vision Residency expands Ars Nova’s artistic vision by inviting seven artist-curators to populate our digital platform with their own work as well as work by artists they champion and admire. Each Resident is given broad support from Ars Nova’s full staff, and spends two months planning for one month of activity on Ars Nova Supra. Each Vision Resident is paid for their curation and administrative work, as well as allocated a program budget towards the creation, development and presentation of work during their curated month. Vision Residents are encouraged to invite other artists they feel inspired by, want to collaborate with or simply wish to amplify to make and share work using the budget and resources of the residency during their month of programming. The 2020/21 Vision Residents are: Starr Busby, nicHi douglas, JJJJJerome Ellis, raja feather kelly, Jenny Koons, David Mendizábal & Rona Siddiqui. First Impression By Mara Goodqold and Marc Petito We have all heard this cliche before, but what does it really mean? When does it really apply? Well, it is most important to make a lasting impression on the first day of school, on a first date, in the opening seconds of a varsity game, or even during a first job interview at The Office. We are all in top form, or at least we strive to be, for these special moments, knowing full well the impact they will have on our future. Each of these firsts brings with it new hopes and dreams. As we look ahead to Pasta Night, the Bonfire, the first wrestling match and the Prom, we anticipate feelings of accomplishment and joy as well as sadness for those who could not be with us to experience these special moments together. Luckily, this yearbook will forever remain a chronicle of the experiences that we at Cranford High School have shared. This yearbook therefore, will never represent an end. but will instead celebrate a year, colored bv vivid and Lasti n 2;.

  • Virality, Algorithms, and Illiberal Attacks on the Press: Legitimation Strategies for a New World
Symposium “Value and Values in the Organizational Sociologica. V.14 N.2 (2020) Production of News” – peer-reviewed ISSN 1971-8853 https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.1971-8853/11190 https://sociologica.unibo.it/ Virality, Algorithms, and Illiberal Attacks on the Press: Legitimation Strategies for a New World Ronald N. Jacobs* Submitted: June 19, 2020 – Accepted: September 4, 2020 – Published: September 18, 2020 Abstract Historically, professional journalism has justified its importance through a series of binary oppositions that privileged objectivity over opinion, news over entertainment, impartiality over partisanship, and public interest over profit. Over the last half century these distinc- tions have become increasingly destabilized, and the press finds itself under attack from a number of different directions. This article examines the social forces that have combined to challenge press authority: (1) the changing ownership structure and revenue model for news organizations, (2) the shifting dynamics of media influence made possible by conver- gence culture and algorithmic culture, and (3) the attacks on expertise made possible by the spread of neoliberal and populist rhetorics in the public sphere. After describing this challenging new media climate, the article finishes by examining the different legitimation strategies journalists have used to defend themselves, considering the different challenges and constraints they confront when articulating these strategies as well as the different po- tential alliances that are available to them. Keywords: Journalism; populism; algorithmic culture; democracy; civil society. * Department of Sociology, University at Albany, State University of New York (United States); rja- [email protected]; http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1253-8102 Copyright © 2020 Ronald N.

  • Friday Essay: Has Donald Trump Broken Satire?
Close Academic rigour, journalistic flair Friday essay: has Donald Trump broken satire? August 7, 2020 6.01am AEST For a long time, the answer has been yes. When Saturday Night Live, John Oliver and Author the satirical establishment railed at him, the president’s supporters were only strengthened in their belief there was a highbrow plot against their guy. Trump met anger with anger, and the effect of satire on public opinion played out to a very noisy draw. Robert Phiddian Professor of English, Flinders University Now, however, three months out from the election in this most bizarre of years, the wheels may be falling off the Trump bandwagon. And satirists like Sarah Cooper, with her brilliantly economical lip-synching of the president’s speeches, seem to be adding to the Trump campaign’s problems in politically effective ways. Satire might be biting back, at least to the extent of nipping at Trump’s heels, while The Virus and his response to it are breaking his image as a strong leader. Those of us who enjoy satires like to imagine that the good ones (that is, the ones that make us laugh) change minds and form public opinion. This silver bullet effect, though possible, is extremely rare, as the long experiment in combative public rhetoric called the Trump presidency has demonstrated. Join 130,000 people who subscribe to free evidence-based news. Get newsletter Lip Syncing Trump LIVE on the 4th of July 4th Sarah Cooper lip-synchs Trump live during his Fourth of July speech this year. The case for yes (satire is broken) Satire makes us laugh, so we conflate it with comedy, which also makes us laugh.
