1 Cougar Soccer UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University held its first classes in October of 1968 on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was purchased by public subscription and donated to the university. With an enrollment of around 2,600 students, MVNU is the official university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia, and the eastern half of Kentucky. The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character, value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve." The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf), and students can take part in an active intramural program. The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River, constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City." Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch, Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students. Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building. The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well. 2 Cougar Soccer UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

In addition to the central campus, the university owns a 70-acre tract of woodland just six miles northeast of the city. Currently, this tract is used as a biological field station for MVNU's biology and natural resources programs. Academic Programs The university offers over 40 majors with more than 80 different programs from its 21 academic departments. Bachelor’s degrees are available in: Nursing, Accounting, Business Administration, Applied Business Technology, Management, Marketing, International Business, Early Childhood Education, Middle Childhood Education, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Life Science Education, Physical Science Education, Music Education, Physical Education/Health, Spanish Education, Visual Arts Education, Integrated Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Exercise Studies, Sports Management, Art, Music, Communication, Broadcasting, Drama, Graphic Design, English, Professional Writing, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Allied Health Programs, Medical Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Children’s Ministries, Educational Ministries, Youth Ministries, Philosophy, Religion, History, Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Sociology. In addition, MVNU offers associate’s degrees in: Applied Business Technology, Business Administration, Church Music, Family Life Management, Child Development Administration, Fitness Management, Business Data Processing, and Human Services. Was an All-City League First Team selection in tennis. 15 Cougar Soccer 2014 SEASON PREVIEW MOUNT VERNON, Ohio.- The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team is gearing up for what should be an exciting 2014 season. Training camp is in full swing with the first scrimmage of the preseason scheduled for August 20th. MVNU Head Coach Daniel Seiffert enters his sixth season at the helm of the program and is excited about taking the program forward in 2014. “Last year we had a really young team and I thought that we progressed well as the season developed,” Seiffert said. “Every game was a one goal match and that was a very posi- tive thing that happened for us last season. We doubled our scoring from the previous year and lowered our goals against so that is something our team can build on. The players are motivated and there will be some strong competition for starting positions. It should be an enjoyable and competitive season.” On offense, the Cougars will have a number scoring options when the team hits the field in 2014. Junior defender Casey Apple led MVNU in scoring as a sophomore in 2013. Apple, a native of Waynesville, Ohio, fired in 10 goals and assisted on two others leading to 22 points. Meanwhile, Megan Griffith ended her junior season with the teams highest point total topping out at 26 in 2013. Griffith, a midfielder who hails from Powell, Ohio, reached that mark thanks to seven goals and 12 assists and hopes to top those numbers again this season. Senior forward Brittney Bogantz provided a big spark off the bench in 2013 and will look to make a major impact again this season. Bogantz, a forward from Sunbury, Ohio, played in 20 matches a year ago, scoring six goals with three assists and 15 points. As a team last season, MVNU made it hard for opponents to find the back of the net thanks to some outstanding defense. The Lady Cougars surrendered just 23 goals, limiting teams to just over one goal per match. Senior defenders Tiffany Wright (Curtice, Ohio) and Lydia Simpson (Chillicothe, Ohio) along with sophomore Shannon Gwynn (Jeannette, Pa.) started all 21 matches in 2013 and will be key pieces in the MVNU defense for 2014. Rounding out the defense for MVNU are the net minders and the Lady Cougars have two coming back with experience from last season. Senior Eleni Miller from Stow, Ohio led the team with 37 saves in 12 games played with nine starts a year ago. Senior Lexus Andolino, a na- tive of Mansfield, Ohio, played 12 games with 11 starts while making 31 saves. The Lady Cougars will also have a host of new faces on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Seiffert and the coaching staff have brought in 11 new players who will compete with the returners for the 11 starting positions on the field. “Our attacking group is very similar to last year and our players know it’s a team game,” Seiffert added. “We always have the mentality of we win as a team and lose as a team. With a veteran team coming back that has a lot of experience we hope to not only increase our produc- tion on offense, but be even stingier when it comes to surrendering goals.” MVNU will warm up with two scrimmages beginning with Kenyon College on August 20th followed by a friendly with the College of Mount St. Joseph on the 23rd. The regular season kicks off on August 28th at Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) followed by a battle at Bethel Uni- versity (Tenn.) on the 30th. The non-conference slate continues with matches against Cincinnati Christian University (Ohio), Geneva College (Pa), University of Rio Grande (Ohio), Lawrence Tech (Mich.), University of Northwestern Ohio, and Marygrove College (Mich.). The Lady Cougars get the conference slate rolling on September 27th when they host the University of St. Francis at 3:00 PM. Other Crossroads League battles include showdowns with Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, Marian (Ind.) University, Grace (Ind.) College, and Taylor (Ind.) University. The top eight teams in the regular season will advance to the Crossroads League Tournament. “We truly believe in a strong work ethic and how we gel as a team will be key for a suc- cessful season,” Seiffert said. “It will be important for every player on the roster find their roles and create that team first dynamic.” 16 Cougar Soccer 2013 INDIVIDUAL HONORS

The Crossroads League currently consists of 10 institutions located in Indiana, , Ohio: Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Taylor (Ind.) University. The purpose of the Crossroads League is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The conference sponsors championships in 14 sports (seven for men and seven for women). Crossroads League student athletes and teams also make their mark on the NAIA national level by virtue of national championships, All-Americans, Scholar- Athletes, national rankings, and statistical leaders. For complete information on the conference as well as up-to-date standings, statistics, and stories for each sport, go to: www.crossroadsleague.com

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited. 19 Cougar Soccer MVNU’S AFFILIATIONS

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the mid-1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade point average while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student- athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The Scholar-Athlete program, a longstanding NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student-athletes with a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletics programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust – a relationship strengthened year after year.

The National Christian College Athletic Association is a miracle organization. Over the years, an idea has become a reality providing Christian student-athletes in Christian colleges and universities both an opportunity for fellowship and competition on a national level. The NCCAA game plan is to produce true winners – a game plan that will carry an individual through his or her entire life. The game plan is devised to draw out the student-athlete’s greatest potential in body, mind, and spirit.

Since its first tournament in 1968, the NCCAA has grown to encompass more than 100 Christian colleges and universities nationwide, both liberal arts and Bible colleges in stature. The participating schools are dedicated not only to the best athletic competition possible, but also to exemplifying Jesus Christ in everything. The NCCAA is an organization bringing Christian colleges and universities together not just for athletic competition. More importantly, it is an organization bringing schools together which have common goals in Christian higher education. 20 Cougar Soccer 2013 CROSSROADS FINAL STANDINGS

The MVNU women’s and men’s soccer teams plays all of their home matches on Cougar Field, which is adjacent to the MVNU baseball field on the campus. The 120 x 75 yard natural grass field is complete with an underground sprinkler system that has helped to make the field one of the nicest playing surfaces in the state. There is also a press box and an electronic scoreboard at the field. The bleachers seat approximately 200 spectators with plenty of additional area to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The MVNU student body is recognized for the spirited support they exhibit in favor of the Cougars. This has resulted in numerous matches with standing room only space left on the sidelines. In addition to Cougar Field, the team also practices on an adjacent practice field that is shared with the men’s soccer team. The team also uses the Physical Education Center for indoor soccer practices during the winter months. The Physical Education Center features a hardwood floor that is used primarily for the MVNU women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams.
