20 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020 CROSSROADS LEAGUE COACHES AND PLAYERS CODE OF ETHICS

In order that the overall objectives of the Crossroads League Constitution be fostered, encouraged, and attained, the following code of ethics has been adopted:

1. It is the duty of coaches to be in control of their players at all times in order to prevent any unsportsmanlike act toward opponents, officials, or spectators.

2. Coaches are expected to comply wholeheartedly with the intent and spirit of the rules. The deliberate teaching of players to violate the rules is indefensible.

3. Coaches should teach their players to respect the dignity of the game, officials, opponents and the institutions which they represent.

4. Coaches should confine their discussion with game officials to the interpretations of the rules and not challenge officials' decisions involving judgment.

5. Whereas friendly banter between players is not to be prohibited: cursing, obscene language, malicious or personal remarks to opponents or spectators should not be tolerated at any time. Rather, the players should spend their energies toward encouraging their teammates to better efforts.

6. Coaches should emphasize the fact that their assistants, managers, and other bench personnel must confine their remarks to their own teammates and not "ride" the opposing players.

7. Coaches, themselves, should refrain from any personal action that might arouse players or spectators to unsportsmanlike behavior.

8. Coaches should expect from the officials a courteous and dignified attitude toward players and themselves.

9. Coaches should seek help from school administrators in controlling unruly students and spectators.

10. A coach or faculty member should be present at all Crossroads League athletic events so that the highest standards of sportsmanship and conduct are maintained.

CROSSROADS LEAGUE WEATHER GUIDELINES

This document is the suggestions for our league as guidelines to follow for the spring of 2019. Its purpose is to serve as a unified guideline for the entire league as a reference to help handle the always challenging weather problems each spring.

WEATHER GUIDELINES for SPRING 2019 (to be reviewed again in June – 2019)

TEMPERATURE:

We will use www.weather.com as the official reference to check the weather. The real feel temperature is the number to consider. As an example, if the temperature at weather.com is 36 degrees, however, the real feel is 29 degrees, 29 degrees is the temperature we are using. It is the real feel temperature that is important for our student-athletes and any decision being made.

ABOVE 32 degrees real feel at any time during the time allotted for a game (3 hours for a single game, 5 hours for a double header) means we are playing. As an example, if a doubleheader is scheduled for 1pm, and the real feel temperature at 1 pm shows 31 degrees, 2 pm it is 32 degrees, 3 pm it is 33 degrees, 4 pm it is 32 degrees, and at 5 pm it is 31 degrees, by this guideline, we will play the game(s) (with warming units). Only the UIC (Umpire in Chief) and site administrator (Trainer/administrator) can call the game due to changes in weather and/or player safety.

Any temperature below 40 Degree’s will require heating units in each dugout. Both dugouts need to be warmed equally. If weather.com does not show the real feel temperature to rise above 32 in the allotted time slot, then both coaches should communicate, no travel should commence and the game(s) should be rescheduled.

Phone conversations between the coaches and administrators should always happen prior to when the visiting team begins to travel for any game in question due to weather. It is the traveling/visiting coach’s responsibility to check the weather at the opposition site prior to departure. If weather.com does not show a real feel above 32 degrees for the time scheduled, a phone call must be made to reschedule the contest.

These guidelines are for both baseball and softball for the spring of 2019.

LIGHTNING:

We will use the NCAA standard of a lightning strike within a 10 mile radius (allowing time to cover the field with tarps if needed). Play will be halted for 30 minutes past the last lighting strike within the radius before beginning play. All personnel should take all necessary precautions to maintain safety. www.weather.com will serve to determine the lightning strike, or the potential of lightning within the radius.

ADMINSTRATIVE JUDGEMENT

This guideline also allows for a unilateral judgement call by the athletic director (or administrator in charge), in conjunction with the site supervisor, athletic trainer and UIC to make a decision based on the safety and well-being of the student-athletes, coaches and fans.

ADDITIONAL TECHNOLOGY CONSULTATION

If a school also pays for, or has access to, advance weather technology (i.e. Weather Sentry, local Doppler radar, etc.), this information can be used as an “additional” support (for the safety and well-being of our student-athletes) to the guidelines and application above. Our goal is always safety first.

24 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020

V. Pre-Participation Physicals A. All athletes who compete for a Crossroads League institution are required to have a physical on file with the school’s athletic training staff.

1.All new or transferring student athletes will be required to have a physical by the school’s designated health care professional, or other approved health care professional as listed below, and turned in to the athletic training staff before the student athlete is allowed to participate in any team activities (i.e. weight lifting, conditioning and on the court/field activities)

2.It is up to the league institution whether or not they require students who are going through the try-out processor who have practice players to obtain a physical or sign a release of liability waiver before try-outs begin

B. In order to protect the student athletes as well as each institution, the Crossroads League requires that physicals are performed by an approved healthcare provider. Any physical that is completed by a professional other than one listed below will be void and not accepted as clearance to participate.

1.Medical Doctor (MD & DO) 2.Physician’s Assistant 3.Nurse Practitioner

VI. Amendments - All amendments to the above agreement will be made at the annual Crossroads League ATA meeting held each fall.

Concussion Guidelines

The following information is a guideline for care of student athletes for the Crossroads League regarding concussions. The Crossroads League recommends that all schools follow the protocols set forth by the physicians that cover their athletic teams. The host certified athletic trainer will be responsible for making the call on whether an athlete has a concussion, unless the visiting school has traveled with a certified athletic trainer.

The following is the Crossroads League Policy for Medical Coverage: A. An on-site licensed and certified athletic trainer will be physically available at all home soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball games. B. For other sports participated in by an institution, the athletic trainer will be made available, within a reasonable response time, for all contests.

What is a concussion?

It’s a brain injury that changes a person’s behavior, thinking or physical functioning. They are typically caused by forceful blows to the head or body that result in rapid movement of the head.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

They can be difficult to spot since most don’t lead to a loss of consciousness, and other symptoms can show up hours, or even days, after the injury. They can include: Amnesia; confusion; headaches; loss of 25 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020 consciousness; balance problems; double or fuzzy vision; sensitivity to light or noise; nausea; feeling sluggish; concentration or memory problems; slowed reaction time; feeling unusually irritable.

What if a student-athlete gets a concussion in a game?

First, they should be removed from play as soon as a concussion is suspected and evaluated by an appropriate health-care professional, such as a certified athletic trainer, team physician or a health care professional experienced in concussion evaluation and management. Athletes with a concussion are not allowed to return to the game that day. They should not return to play until all symptoms have been resolved during rest and exertion. A health care professional with experience in evaluating concussions should clear the student-athlete before returning to play is considered. If the athlete is determined not to have a concussion, by the certified athletic trainer, the athlete may be allowed to return to competition.

Crossroads League General Guidelines

I. Indoor sports: Volleyball, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball Sidelines, End Lines and Fan Locations:

A. NCAA Basketball Rulebook 1. Rule 1; Section 3. Lines and other markings a. Article 3: 6 ft. restraining line on the baseline The restraining line shall be a solid, interrupted or mathematical line formed between two colors. The line may be a color that is either the same or different from that of the end lines. When space is not available for a 6 ft. restraining line, the line should be marked using the maximum available distance. Non-playing personnel shall not be permitted in this area. 2. Page 28: The Court – sidelines Preferable 10 ft. unobstructed space outside the court. Where this is not practical, a minimum of 3 ft. is required.

B. The Crossroads League will adhere to the following guidelines for fan locations: 1. Fans may be seated in the bleachers where provided. 2. Fans seated on the first row of bleachers may stand to spontaneously react to an outstanding play, but must be seated thereafter. 3. An institution may designate a “standing area bleacher.” Within this area fans cannot stand on the floor, but will be allowed to stand in the bleachers, starting with the second row. 4. If no bleachers are provided on the baseline, fans must remain behind a roped off area at least 10 ft. beyond the baseline. If there is less than 10 feet between the baseline and the walls, then no fans are permitted to stand between the baseline and the walls. 5. In locations where the baseline 10 ft. roped off area does not intersect with the sideline bleachers, there shall be a roped off area extending from the first row of bleachers to the 10 ft. roped off baseline area. Fans must remain behind this roped off section.

C. In situations where these guidelines do not explicitly state the solution, home game management will facilitate the best scenario possible, keeping in mind the safety of the athletes, officials and fans.

HUMAN ERROR PROCEDURE Question: What is a human error?

Answer: Any time a game is unable to be played because of a lack of officials, or a facility that is not prepared.

Procedure: If home team is responsible for the human error, the game will be made up at the first available open date. This date cannot override a normally scheduled game, or the make- up of a regularly scheduled game. If the game continues to get “pushed” and no more dates are available, it will become a forfeit for the home team. It will be the HOME TEAM’s expense, including paying the officials for the original game (if given the wrong time) on the date of the infraction, and the make-up game at the opponents home site. (team making the infraction must travel to make up this game)

If a SUPERVISOR is responsible for the human error (lack of officials), the game will be treated as a normal “weather” cancellation. If the game cannot be made up, it will go down as a non-played game.

FACILITY MALFUNCTION/GAME SUSPENSION Question: What is a FACILITY MALFUNCTION during a game?

Answer: A game that has been “suspended” because of a facility malfunction and cannot be completed that day.

Procedure: The game will be resumed at the exact point of suspension. The game should be considered a “weather” cancellation and follow protocol for rescheduling a weather cancellation.

TENNIS: MEN & WOMEN

All business conducted by sport committees must be submitted as recommendations to the Administrative Committee.

I. Regular Season

A. Schedule 1.Each institution will schedule each league team one (1) time with the option to play a second time. The first match will count toward the Crossroads League standings. The final league standings will be determined by head-to-head play during the season. There will be nine dates blocked off to play all Crossroads League matches during the regular season. 2.Any league match where there is one coach for both men’s and women’s teams and the matches are hosted on a weekday at a site where there are no lights, the matches shall begin at 1:00 pm to assure completion before dusk. 3.The 2020-21 regular season will begin on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. 4.Weekday matches will alternate between Tuesday and Wednesday each week. The match on Labor Day week will be Wednesday, and the match on the week of the ITA Regional Tournament will be on Tuesday. 5.The men’s and women’s teams will be scheduled to play at the same school on the same date for Crossroads League matches. B. Regular Season Dual-Play 1. Each Crossroads League team will play every other Crossroads League team during the season in a match consisting of six (6) singles 2-out-of-3 sets and three (3) doubles 6-game set. 2. In a dual match, if one team has not scored 4 points and players in a singles match have split sets, then a full third set must be played. However, if one team has already scored 4 points and players in a singles match have split sets, a third set tiebreaker (10 points) will be played. 3. In the event a school cannot field a full team, the high numbered positions are forfeited, i.e. if the number one man/woman is absent, all team members move up and the number six (6) position is forfeited. When there is a 6-6 set score in singles, the 12-point tiebreaker goes into effect. 4. It will be the responsibility of the home team to advise visiting teams of time and place of each match and/or postponements. Rescheduling is agreed upon by both coaches. 5. The minimum time allowed between players’ singles and doubles matches will be 5 minutes.

II. Ethics

A. Players must play in order of ability. The line-up shall always be based on order of

88 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020

ability. “Matching up” is prohibited. In singles, players must compete in order of ability with the best player on the team playing at the No. 1 position, the second best at No. 2, and so on through all positions. In case of injury or sickness, all players must move up. This rule shall also apply to doubles play with the strongest doubles team at No. 1, etc. 1. A player who has established a winning record at a team position in six team matches and whose results show that he/she clearly is stronger than the players below him/her may not be moved down. The line-up must stay in order of ability. 2. If a top-six player (or team) clearly is stronger than the player immediately above him/her, then the player must be moved up a position. 3. Players of equal ability and equal record may alternate between two adjacent positions so long as the alternating is not done for the purpose of “matching up”. 4. A player shall not be moved down in the line-up because of the following: an injury that has lasted and forced the player out of the line-up for less than three weeks, disciplinary measures, or challenge matches after six team matches have been played after January 1st of a school year (ITA Rule II.K.3) B. All protests will be submitted to the League Commissioner. The League Oversight Committee (John Natali, Jon Wegener, Terry Darling) will serve as a Protest Committee to assist the Commissioner in making the decision on the protest. If a member of the Protest Committee is one of the parties involved in the protest, they should recuse themselves and the Tennis Chair for that gender of the sport will serve on the Protest Committee. If that Chairs is also a party involved in the protest, then the Chair of the other gender will serve on the Protest Committee.

III. Rules Governing Play – League match play and Crossroads League Tournament play will be governed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and United State Tennis Association (USTA) rules. Individual institutions may hire USTA licensed officials to oversee matches.

IV. Official Balls – In regular season play, Crossroads League schools may use the ball of their choice, but the official NAIA championship ball (Wilson US Open) is recommended. The official NAIA championship ball (Wilson US Open) will be used during the Crossroads League postseason tournament. The host school(s) will be responsible to provide the official NAIA championship ball (Wilson US Open). If available by contract these balls may be supplied by the NAIA National Office.

V. League Tournament

A. The top eight (8) teams will compete in the single-elimination Crossroads League Tournament with each match consisting of three (3) doubles matches with a format of 6- game sets, and six (6) singles matches with a format of best-of-three sets.

B. Standings at the end of regular season play will be used for determining seeding for the league tournament and for All-Sports Trophy purposes. In the case of two teams having the same league record during the regular season, the team that won the dual match between the two teams will receive the higher seed for the tournament.

1. Tiebreaker rules for team seeding: a. 3 way tie 89 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020

i. Head-to-head league dual match results. If one team has beaten the 2 other teams in the tie in their league dual matches, then that team receives the higher seed.

ii. If the tie cannot be broken by Step 1, then the total team points won in the head-to-head league dual matches among the 3 teams will be summed and the team with the highest number of points will receive the highest seed, and the one with the next highest number of points will receive the next highest seed, etc. (If A beats B 7-2, B beats C 5-4, and C beats A 5-4, then A would have 11 points, B would have 7 points, and C would have 9 points.) If this step separates one team from the tie situation but two teams are still tied, then that tie will be broken by Step 1.

iii. If a tie cannot be broken by steps 1 or 2, then the total number of sets won in the head-to-head league dual matches among the 3 teams will be summed and the team with the highest number will receive the highest seed.

iv. If a tie cannot be broken by steps 1, 2, or 3, then the total number of games won in the head-to-head league dual matches among the 3 teams will be summed and the team with the highest number will receive the highest seed.

C. The #9 and #10 teams in the final regular season standings will not be included in the league tournament.

D. Each league team must pay a tournament fee of $150. Make checks payable to the CL and mail them to Larry DeSimpelare, Crossroads League Commissioner, 3648 Truxton Place, Avon, OH 44011.

E. One tournament official will be provided by the host institution and paid for by the Crossroads League. Every effort should be made to minimize this expense. Tennis chair will coordinate.

F. The Crossroads League Tournament for both men and women will be held October 6, 8, and 10, 2020. All matches will be played at the site of the higher seeded team.

G. The Men’s and Women’s Tennis Chairs with the assistance of the Crossroads League Commissioner will handle seeding and rules interpretations.

H. Tournament Structure

First Round: #1 vs. #8 | #4 vs. #5 | #2 vs. #7 | #3 vs. #6

Semifinals: #1/#8 Winner vs. #4/#5 Winner | #2/#7 Winner vs. #3/#6 Winner

Championship: Semifinal Winners

Tournament Schedule: The sport chairs and coaches will decide on which days of that week the matches will be played in order to accommodate the schools which have the same coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. The ideal scenario is to have one day separating each round of play for each team and to have the finals on Saturday for both men and women, if possible. I. The host athletic directors in conjunction with the men’s and women’s tennis chairs will coordinate the Crossroads League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments. J. Home teams must provide an athletic trainer for matches. K. All first-round matches are to be played out and not end when one team has scored four points. If the team score has been decided and a singles match goes to a third set, they will play a 10 pt match tiebreaker. For all subsequent rounds, the match will end when one team scores four points regardless of if the match is inside or outside. L. All matches will start with doubles (6 game set) and then singles matches (best of 3) M. Since the tournament is a team format, dual match lineup rules apply. If a player cannot play due to injury or discipline, then the other players must move up a position to replace the player who is not playing. N. It is preferred that CL Tournament matches be played on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of tournament week. However, if the forecast for match day on either of the first two rounds is for inclement weather, then if both coaches agree the match be be moved to another day that week. However, the first round match has to be completed by Wednesday in order that the semifinals can be played on either Thursday or Friday. Finals will be played on Saturday of tournament week. If it is not possible to play on the preferred day or move it to another day, then the match will be played indoors. The home team is responsible for getting indoor courts. O. Financial Report Form - Host school(s) for all Crossroads League Postseason contests will use the supplied Financial Report Form to report expenses and gate revenues to the League Commissioner. Revenue (net) and the Financial Form are to be forwarded to the League Office one week after the Crossroads League postseason is complete. VI. All-Crossroads League Team A. Each coach will nominate the outstanding player(s) from his/her team based on league performance.

91 Crossroads League Procedures Manual 2019/2020

B. A ballot is then cast for the nominees to select a team composed of 15 players. The 15 players receiving the most votes on this ballot are named to the All-Crossroads League Team. C. A coach may vote for his/her own players. D. All ties for the final position are included in the All-Crossroads League Team. E. Voting results for All-Crossroads League teams will be made available to all Crossroads League Tennis coaches. D. In the event of ties between three or more teams in the final league standings, the same tie-breaker as above (Letter C) should be used with the following principle to be followed: Tiebreaker #1 will use the aggregate head-to-head record among the tied teams in an attempt to break the tie. If the aggregate head to head records break the ties between all teams involved, there will be no need to move to Tiebreaker #2. If all teams are still tied at Tiebreaker #1, continue through the remaining tiebreakers until at least one team can be eliminated. Once at least one team has been eliminated and a tie still exists between two or more teams, the team(s) that can be eliminated from the tie will be placed in the appropriate seeding position(s). For the remaining teams that are still tied, the tiebreaking process starts over at Tiebreaker #1 and continues until all ties are broken.
