It is said that Raja Janak, the legendry King "Videha" excavated a tank at this place where Sita appeared to life from the earth. The legend is that a Hindu ascetic, named Birbal Das, came tQ know about this site by divine inspit-ation and commenced the worship of Janaki or Sita here about 500 years ago. Vivah Panchami is observed to celebrate the marriage of Rama and Sita every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Agrahayan in the temple when devotees from far flun~ areas come to worship. The place is 1.5 kms. away from Sitamarhi railway station and Bus stand.
